I always just thought of Otis Redding as a baritone, but after closer listening I decided he is a tenor. Its hard to tell though because his voice is often rough. What do our experts say?

For that matter, what about other rough voiced singers like David Clayton Thomas or Jr. Wells, or Louis Armstrong. To my ear their voices produce more than one strong pitch, one of which is a deep growl with at least another higher note. Can these types of voices be classified traditionally? .... Any comments?

I really don't think Otis was a Tenor...maybe he could sing a high note, but a Tenor Naaaaah!
I think your first choice a Baritone was more like it. (smile)
Now, what would you say Barry White sang?
Barrington Henderson?
Jeffrey Osborn?
Dennis Edwards?
Walter Jackson?
Isaac Hayes?
Ceasar of 'The Tymes'?
Ali Woodson
James Ingram?
Johnny Gill?
hmmmmmm, now you got me thinking...but I think when they have a strong (rough) voice, there is no way they can be a Tenor...and if it's a strong smoothe voice, let's say like Walter Jackson, Ceasar or Jeffrey Osborn, they sound (to me) more of a Baritone..although they probably could reach down in the Bass catagory...Now I could be wrong about this, since I don't read, or play music.
