1)You Keep Me Hangin On---really more rock than soul-and brilliant. Flo chases Diana to the finish line.
2)Where Did Our Love Go--still haunting;lowering the key HDH created Miss Ross. To my ears it sounds like a duet with Mary's baby baby.
3)Stoned Love--Diana who?Jean soars and Mary and Cindy are right there next to her. Only Galdys Knight compares to Jean as far as the best at Motown.
4)Touch--lost #1--Frank Wilson is brilliant and Mary's velvet voice chills. Cindy brings it home.
5)He's My Man--slammin soul/rock/dance. Another lost #1; Mary and Scherrie give no ground but Mary's sass has an edge.---------------------Just my thoughts--yours?

1) I'm Gonna Let My Heart Do The Walking-This song still kicks!
2) Reflections-Haunting. One of the last Florence sang on.
3) When Can Brown Begin-I listened to the "Supremes Produced by Jimmy Webb" album the other night and I was amazed and saddened how Motown slept on this one. This album is stellar!
Jean, Mary, and Lynda turned this one out!
4)Bad Weather-Another great song that Stevie Wonder wrote & produced. Motown did nothing with this one either.
5) Sweet Dream Machine-From the very last studio set with Mary, Scherrie, & Susaye. Powerful and swirling musical arrangements and great lead vocals from Scherrie & Mary. Susaye provides some haunting vocal fills.

Greg--I certainly agree with Im Gonna...always thought it was Sasaye at the beginning until the 70s anthology and THAT was cleared up--I keep It Hid from Jimmy Webb I think is Mary's best ever--haunting,restrained, passionate and then soaring.

I keep hearing about "Bad Weather" by The Supremes. I'd never heard of it before coming to SD. When was it recorded? Did it ever come out on vinyl? -Or, was it unreleased from the vaults? I have "Bad, Bad Weather" by the Spinners, writen by Allen Story, H. Gordy and L. Brown (which I like very much). Is it that same song?

Top of pageBottom of page   By Edgar (200.46.13.137) on Saturday, March 27, 2004 - 06:57 pm:

No, it was written by Stevie Wonder and Lynda Laurence's brother Ira Tucker, Jr., for The Supremes. As the story goes, Lynda (who had been a part of Wonderlove) asked Stevie to produce The Supremes. Wonder did "Bad Weather" as well as "Soft Days" with them.

"Bad Weather" was released as a single in 1973, and was a huge hit in different places. I was living in San Juan (Puerto Rico) in those days and it became #1 there. It was also played constantly on Radio Luxembourg. Not so in the US, where it flopped. After that song, Jean Terrell left the group, followed by Ms. Laurence.

The song first appeared on a vinyl album on the compilation "DiscOTech Vol. 2", and then in "The Supremes At Their Best". In recent years, it's been included in most Supremes' anthologies, including an extended version in the purple box set, where you can hear Mary Wilson shouting and laughing at the end. You can tell they all had a lot of fun recording it. The song even includes a whistle, a very common practice in discotheques, and I've read somewhere that Mary met ex-husband Pedro Ferrer during a concert in San Juan, in which she blew her whistle when Pedro entered the room.

As for "Soft Days" -with Jean singing lead and Mary singing the last verse- it was intended as the follow-up to "Bad Weather" in Great Britain and a few 45s were distributed for promotion, but it remained in the vaults. Bootleg copies have circulated since then. It's a very beautiful song.

Top of pageBottom of page   By Vandelron (68.198.48.201) on Saturday, March 27, 2004 - 07:23 pm:

Bad Weather just never did it for me tho it has grown on me and I like it more now. To my ears its missing something--maybe more of a hook. Though I think it was an excellent attempt at a change in direction. As much as Stevie wanted perhaps a more soulful Jean I think she is more of an Anita Baker type.

Top of pageBottom of page   By Robb_K (66.81.181.194) on Saturday, March 27, 2004 - 09:29 pm:

I used to listen to Radio Luxembourg in the early '70s, as I lived in Den Haag. But I didn't remember the song (at least by title). I guess it didn't make that much impression on me. If I would hear it now, I would remember if I had ever heard it. Come to think of it, I can't remember the names of many songs or artists from the '70s. I guess I just listened to the music as "background music", and didn't get much involved emotionally, as I did with the '40s, '50s and '60s music.

Together We Can Make Sweet Music (love Mary and Cindy's backup to Jean's great vocal. This should have been a single)

Wow, this is hard, there are truly so many great Supremes tunes.

1. A Heart Like Mine - Mary's dusky lead searching for the answers. The harmonies are ethereal, they take me to a great place.
2. Your Heart Belongs To Me - Diana Ross singing in a non-nasally voice, just sounding as sexy as she wants to sound.
3. He's My Sunny Boy - Such a sweet song, and it's bouncy and buoyant, everything you expect from a Supremes tune
4. Surfer Boy - no reason really, i just love this song and it's diana at the height of that cooing nasal sound, i actually dig it.
5. Touch - sexiest supremes song ever.

Top of pageBottom of page   By Vandelron (68.198.48.201) on Monday, March 29, 2004 - 08:58 am:

I was only going with A side singles. Going Down for The Third Time-so un-Supremes and could have been an A side-fantastic---too "soulful" for an A side did Motown think? One of the few songs I can think of where Flo and Mary and Diana really just let loose.

Vandelron:

You are right about Goin Down For the Third Time. Mary and Florence are wailing on that song. It is similar in terms of wailing backup to I'll Set You Free on the Love Child album. Mary and Cindy seem to be having a blast. At least I think it is Mary and Cindy.... I'd like to think it is.... in any event, somebody is singing the walls down in the backup.

Thanks Edgar on the insight to " Bad Weather".

Robb K, ya just gotta hear this cut, it's great.

You can find it on a fairly recently released CD compilation called "The Wonder Of Stevie".

It's an album featuring other artists interpretations of Stevie songs and well worth picking up.

1) It has Bad Weather on it.

2) It contains the definitive version of Golden Lady as done by Jose Feliciano.

If that wasn't enough......

3) It contains the definitive version of Pastime Paradise as recorded by Ray Barreto. Simply awesome.
