Hi Mel, I recored Herb Ward first, I can't remember all the details, but Herb did not sing with any group at that time, the record I recored with Herb, was "Strange Change"

he did record with other labals after he left Harthon records, I remember him doing somthing on Phil.La of Soul, Then he started working with Sonny Hopson, All Brothers Records, could be one of Sonny's lables,

MEL.
Herb Ward was bornHerbert McCracken, his 1st single was-Hand,s off she,s mine-on Buddy in 1964,his next release i believe was on Argo(as mentioned above)in sept 1965.This was a flop and he next re-appeared as-Sunshine in 1967 with -Leave me and see what happens.Moving on his next release came out on R.C.A. as Herb Ward again,he then appears to have given up and i think i read once he was a truck driver in Canada for about 20years--what a waste!
hope this helps,mate.

HI there

first can I say this is an amazing opportunitity to talk direct with legends of soul on here, Weldon & Bobby being the names I know best but am amazed at the names (the genuine ones!) that keep cropping up.

A question for Weldon, re the Herb Ward Strange Change, fantastic record and as someone said legendary in the UK Northern Soul scene. Listening to it again after your post it would appear to be quite a different sound for that time, do you agree, if so can you remember the thoughts behind the sound, particularly the very atmospheric build up.

Apologies if way out here on this but was only 4 years old when record out and living in UK so my ears were only exposed to what music I have found since then, i.e. no radio like the guys in the States would have.

Anyway would appreciate your thoughts.

Jock

PS Should say I listen to all sorts of soul from 60's to present date not only Northern so was comparing it generally to what soul I know from that era.

Hi Jocko,
I have produced so many records, it's hard to remember why and how,we came up with a particular sound, and I have not heard that record "Strange Change" in years, you guys in UK northen soul scene, have made a lot of records we did, very popular there, that did nothing here in the US,I'm going over to my man Val's record store, and get the record, and get back to you and try to answer your questions,
