Myself, Harry, Mel and Ade will be going to the Nighter on March 26th in Manchester.

The nighter is in the original premises and I can't begin to tell you how much I'm looking forward to returning there after 33 years.

We will also be meeting up with dancing legend Frank Booper New.

If anyone wants to come with us, it would be great to see you.

Keith Rylatt co-wrote an excellent book on the Twisted Wheel a couple of years ago.

In it he listed all performances at the Wheel.

Looking at the book now I can see The Vibrations (US Soul Package) on December 16th 1967. The New Vibrations on 15th February 1969.

Remind us what the Vibrating Vibrations was about
"Surprise Party For Baby" on Neptune is one of my fav tracks.

Here's the dee-jay area in 1970 (probably).

In 1970 many of the acts were as above but the club was running into difficulty with the Law.

The final performance was by the late great Edwin Starr in January 1971. Quite fitting.

The acts who performed there and the rare soul sounds played there guaranteed this underground club legendary status.

The Northern Soul scene was almost certainly born there although the North of England had other clubs operating a similar music policy.

Keith and Phil Scott's excellent book can be obtained via BeeeCool Publishing and is called "Central 1179" (which was the clubs telephone number).

I spoke to the organiser's wife and she told me that downstairs will be open for the first time.

We might be in the hotel next door beforehand.

You'll see my pic on the Dan Penn thread.

Please look us up it's going to revive some great memories.

I just phoned the organiser, Pete Roberts, who tells me that the Wheel opens at 10pm and closes around 6.30am. There is a bar which is open until 4am.

There are 8 disc jockeys lined up including Brian Rae.

The music will be downstairs in the old front room where the artists used to perform.

Miss this at your peril, it will be a great night.

David
a pity Keith wont be there
regards 'booper'
he used to come to Ormskirk regularly.

A mate of mine and 'Boopers' was a guy named Pete Simpson another great dancer from the wheel.
Anyway around 1971/2 there was a social club on a sunday night run by ormskirks 'Soulspinners 4' AND ONE TIME i saw 'booper' and pete standing on table as a 45 was playing and together they both jumped off into a back-flip.

A hard thing to do.
I am hoping pete will be at the wheel it would be great to see them both together on the floor again.
Will be phoning pete later.

cheers
mel

Hi there, am new to this forum or for last few weeks anyway, great information (in among the dating!), have a number of questions about some of the info from a number of the threads, just need to order them in my mind before posting!

Quick question for Mel, is this the Mel from Ormskirk who used to share with Pete Lawson? If so its Jock O'Connor from Edinburgh here, I visited you a number 0f times in the 80's (once when djing at one of Brian Raes Wheel nights in 80's if I remember rightly hence my posting in this thread). If it is you get in touch off line, would be great to speak again, been a long time.

Cheers

Jock
