Hello Everyone.

It has to be THE TEMPTATIONS, either with DAVID RUFFIN or DENNIS EDWARDS.

I had a chance to see them once, as they spent a week performing in Sheffield, England in 1971/72 when I was living there. But they were playing some "supper club" venue and I never went.

Actually I DID see one of them, as one lunchtime I walked through the pedestrian underpass that was outside the Cathedral and MELVIN FRANKLIN was walking towards me. Of course, as a rather shy 17 year old I did the "English" thing and kept on walking, I would probably have been totally tongue-tied if I'd tried to speak to him.

One thing that struck me was how TALL he was, way over 6 feet, and yet when I see him on the covers of my TEMPATIONS L.Ps he was one of the shorter ones!! How tall were the rest?

And wasn't his real name DAVID ENGLISH? and he changed his name as "English" didn't sound right for a Soul singer, or am I getting him confused with someone else?

Roger

All of the PIR artists and the Motown Revue. I think I would have had a great time if I saw the Revue live...also I wish I was at the James Brown show at the Apollo...listening to the record makes me wish. I wish I could have seen Eddie Kendricks and David Ruffin live in their solo heyday and at their last tour with Dennis Edwards...also Phyllis Hyman, Jackie Wilson, and the Jackson Five. Also, Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson, and Parliament-Funkadelic and the Brides of Funkenstein. Although I have seen Diana Ross at the Central Park free concert, I wish I could have seen her shows during the 70s. Rick James shows in the 80s and definitely Bob Marley/Wailers and Peter Tosh.

Soul Sister and Spyder, the Nicholas Brothers were just fabulous...
Everyone knows (or should have heard) about their performance in STORMY WEATHER (the final number is just unreal) but some other movies they did shouldn't be overlooked like the only color material I have on them, a the mind boggling number in the movie 'Down Argentine Way' (a Betty Grable movie saved by the appearance of the dynamic duo!)
Or 'Orchestra Wives', 'Sun Valley Serenade'... and many others...
YOu can also catch Harold Nicholas on the "Motown returns to the Apollo" show, with a segment dedicated to all the great tap dancers with some amazing footage...

Back to the topic... I would have loved to see Linda Jones, Tammi Terrell, Donny Hathaway, or the Four Tops at the time 'Bernadette' came out... LOL

The only artists I've never seen live was Mary/Cindy/Diana Supremes and David Simmons. Other than that, I've been blessed to see, and in many cases meet, every artist I've ever enjoyed.

I finally had the chance in recent years to meet my all-time favorite - Cindy Mizelle. I had to hide by Luther's bus for quite a while in a bad snow storm, but finally got to tell her how much I enjoyed her work. One of the sweetest people I've met in (or out of) the biz, and I've met lots.

Top of pageBottom of page   By Rodmann (12.223.170.105) on Wednesday, March 17, 2004 - 01:29 am:

Here's a few that I wish I had had a chance to see live:

LINDA JONES - This woman put her heart and soul into her singing, literally! In fact, didn't she die in the early 70's right after performing at the Apollo? She sang as if her life depended on it! Wish I could have witnessed her in action! :(

PARLIAMENTS - I would have liked to have seen George Clinton and Parliament in the 60's while they were still a Soul vocal group. I have several of the singles on Revilot and they're fantastic.

IKE & TINA TURNER - Tina was so damn soulful in the 60's and early 70's! Ike kept the band tight too. They kept changing Ikettes but I never heard one that couldn't sing. I bet this show was great. I have a couple of their live LP's and they're excellent.

JAMES BROWN - I'd like to see his show anytime from 1965-1975 when he had Bootsy Collins, Maceo Parker, Lyn Collins, Vicky Anderson, Bobby Byrd, etc. James doesn't get as much credit as he deserves. If his live show was anything like his records I know it was great!

CHERYL LYNN - She's probably my favorite female singer and I've never had the chance to see her live. I would have liked to see her in the mid 80's singing all of her hits with a tight band behind her. I've read somewhere that she used to open for Luther Vandross in the early 80's and she would wipe the floor with everyone on the bill including Luther! LOL. The girl was bad!

PATTI DREW - I bet she was great. I can just imagine her tearing it up with a tight band behind her in the late 60's/early 70's!

DRAMATICS - In the 70's.

ROY AYERS - He had a very tight band (at least in the studio) in the late 70's/early 80's. I would have loved to see them live.

BETTY DAVIS - Not the movie star Bette but the Funk singer and Miles' ex. Whew she was funky! And the musicians on her records were excellent! I envy whoever got to see her doing her thing live in the 70's! I wonder if they were as good as they were on her records?

What's up Rodmann. Man, if you had seen George & the boys back then, you wouldn't have recognized them. George used to wear 3-piece suits & looked quite the businessman. When I saw a picture of The Parliament, I was like Naaaaw. And, yes, the great Linda Jones died of Diabetes during a run at The Apollo in 1972. At the time, some ignorant persons accused her of dying of a drug overdose. It never occured to them that she was using insulin. Such was those days of the early 70s, we lost many to the scourge of heroin. I was very happy to see that rumor squashed. When you consider that she was only 28 when she died, it makes one wonder just how great she could have become.
