I was dl'd a modem driver for a job tonight and thought I'd pop in and check out a few posts...saw this...slid over to the PBS schedule site for my area...saw it came on 15 minutes ago...had just enough time to pop in a tape before leaving. The beauty of SDF and the Web. We live in wondrous times.

--This special was recorded back in mid Dec.03 in
Atlantic City. We lucky people here in the Philly
and South Jersey area had the chance to buy
tickets for the two shows they combined to make
this 70's special. It was on PBS here
earlier in this year, on NJ PBS and Philly PBS.
After viewing it, I was So sorry I didn't buy tickets, as the show is
excellent. They also are selling some great
stuff during intermission.
You'll really enjoy it.

So far, I didn't care too much for the lead singer of Heatwave. I thought that he should've left the high notes alone. He had a tough act to follow in Johnnie Wilder. Always & Forever requires brilliance, I don't think that he pulled it off. They should have sang another song. All that I kept thinking of was Johnnie Wilder & this guy wasn't that close.

Patti has been Patti, excellent as always & George McCrae sounded good. I thought that Gerald Alston sounded good, but I miss that classic Manhattans harmony. So far, The Stylistics sound great, the harmonies are superb & the lead singer sounds good. The cornrows aren't really working for him though. It kinda throws off the suit. They sound excellent, Arrion sounds good as well. Somebody likes them, they've given them 3 songs. I guess that's because they recorded them from another location, I think it was England.

Damn, EUGENE is going to be singing with the Chi-Lites, I can't wait to see that!! Elis' boys McFadden & Whitehead are going to be on as well. So far, so good!!!

Top of pageBottom of page   By Juicefree20 (141.149.46.54) on Saturday, March 06, 2004 - 10:51 pm:

Eli, Juicefree20 here. I just saw McFadden & Whitehead, did they edit something, or did McFadden & Whitehead deliberately avoid certain verses? I have a question for you that is best asked off line. Could you get in touch with me at Juicefree@hotmail.com. I must say that Harold Melvins' Blue Notes sound great. Who's singing lead, that's not Ebo is it. He sounds a hella lot Ebo & Teddy. Damn, they sound excellent, the harmony is all that. So far, they are they best of the groups. The harmony sounds just like it's 1972, how many are from the classic 70's line-up. They should've gotten more than one song. And now, it's Bloodstone, these brothers were bad. I'm always glad to hear Charles McCormick sing. I never hear anyone talk about their classic '84 classic ballad Instant Love, that song was great. Bobby, who was that playing the guitar solo on Natural High that night? Look forward to your response. Peace Bobby!

This is the best I've heard the Chi-lites sing in such a long time. It sure was great seeing Eugene Record. He knows how to do his thing.

Wow-hot stuff. Miss Patti does it again;Maxine Nightengale quite good fow what she does; Stylistics-hmmmm----someone should tell the lead singer to smile once in awhile;where are Kathy and Kim SLedge?;wish they had put Miss Jean on the tv;Emotions--harmonic chills;George McCrae--he is still alive(how did that rumor get started???) and still has it-big time.

Patti LaBelle brought me to tears not to mention the goosebumps sitting on my arms! OOOH, that girl can SANG!

Top of pageBottom of page   By Juicefree20 (141.149.46.54) on Saturday, March 06, 2004 - 11:32 pm:

I must say that Maxine sounds excellent. I'm glad to see that people will now see that Lead Me On was an excellent song from '79. Eugene sounded great & it was good to see them together again. I also thought that Walter played those drums & I liked that little "Brick, brick, brick, brick" segment. Lionels' missimg out on something good here. Could you imagine how they would sound together, It's also good to see Tavares on stage again, they sound good. Somehow Sister Slege minus 2 sisters, especially when Kathy is missing, seems sacriligeous to me. Without Kathy, it's not really Sister Sledge.

Top of pageBottom of page   By Eli (68.236.53.71) on Saturday, March 06, 2004 - 11:38 pm:

Hey Juice,
I dont know why they edited M&W's performance , as they did the whole song when they taped the show.
The lead singer of the Bluenotes is Donnell Gillespie and hes ben the lead for quite a while now, as Ebo passed away from cancer in the early nineties, I believe.
There were no original Bluenotes in that lineup.
The guy playing the guitar solo on Natural high is Don Garvin, from Pittsburgh.
He is also the guy who owns the studio that does the sound recording and all of the post production work.
He realy naild that solo, as it is quite a unique part to cop!

I was shocked and surprised to see George McCrae as well. I thought he was (forgive me, dead!!!)
I almost dropped my phone out of my hand when I saw him! I thought it was just me, but I read and I can't remember where, that this man had died of a heart attack in '84? I had to keep rubbing my eyes, I mean I have not really seen him since "Rock your Baby", I Get lifted" days, so it was like okay this is new it is not an old show. I kept saying to the TV, George I am glad you are still alive, and that was best kept lie that I have heard! I want to get both dvds because of course they can't show you everything on PBS. I even saw Sharon Paige backstage with the Blue Notes, so she must have sang! I did not know that Ebo passed away. The lead singer for Heatwave was Johnnie's brother Keith who has always been there. It was good just see all these people, even though everyone was not there and we did not get to see full perforomances, like I stated before, the lead for the Stylistics needs some more stage presence, don't be so scared, Airron needs to give him some pointers. Charles McCormick is so smooth!!!!!!! Eugene, whoa, what can you say! The Emotions, the little bit that I did see Of Jean Terrell(love her voice) Yvonne Eliman and those bad Tavares bros, still sounding an looking good. All of these people should have major recording contracts, what is wrong with these ignorant "Suits" who walk around thinking of only gimmicks, machines, and money, but no longevity. If it wasn't for all these groups and more, there would be none of the people who are here today,(and GOD). Thank You! Nuff Said!

It is interesting that on the last PBS special that Mary Wilson's songs were cut from the televised portion (except for the finale of Someday We'll Be Together with Johnny Bristol) and that Jean Terrell was cut from this TV special. The Supremes, even in the 70's had huge hits and were a major group so it seems strange considering the time given to others.

Jean Terrell seemed to be backed up by Freddi Poole, who is a member of Former Ladies of the Supremes (that should give Mary agita). I couldn't tell who the other lady was.

Charise: I heard that lie too about George McCray but realized he was alive last year some time.
As far as Eban Brown of the Stylistics, I saw them @ 3 weeks ago and he has stage presence. (Maybe he had to stay pretty much in the same place for the camera.) He was more animated and the group did some really nice steps to Rock & Roll Baby tapping their shoes with a hanky and such.

Ah - Mary was asked, through her manager - an offer letter and dicussion took place with her management. I'm not sure where that rumor got started, but the PBS producers have attempted Supremes reuions for the past four years.

My understanding is that the offer was being taken to her by her manager - no official response or decline came back by show time.

Jean didn't appear in the final broadcast because (as anyone who was at the live show can attest) - sadly, she came down with a terrible flu the day of the show and lost her voice. She was ok for rehearsals, but by showtime the bug took over.

She was a real trooper and still tried her best to sing for the crowd.

Although, it was too late to feature the song on tv (tv delivery dealdines past), after two weeks of rest - the producers invited her back in the studio to re-record the audio for the dvd release, as a special "lost outtake bonus track".

Jean was in perfect voice for the session - feeling better and sounding stronger than ever. It's ashame that flu hit her at the live show - thankfully the producers cared enough for Jean to do all they could to keep this special performance on the dvd.

She is an amazing talent - and her voice is awesome.

Cindy was also contacted once Jean's appearance was confirmed (very close to showtime), but had some personal family stuff going on the day of the taping (Cindy was invited for both Patti and Jean's performances)- in retrospect, all things happen for a reason - It was hard enough for Jean to try and sing through the terrible flu that was going all around the country that week, the timing was just not right for a reunion that night.

Hopefully, some day - they will be together.

Which, by the way was the suttle message the producer wanted to send to all of the living Supremes and Supremes fans on last year's PBS soul special - the song that closed the show - was there for a reason.

Now you know, "the rest of the story"

Kathy of Sister Sledge is in New York starring in a play. The name of the play is What Men Don't Tell. It is a drama/commedy being shown at the Beacon Theatre.

The play also stars singer Lenny Williams, Gary Jenkins from the group Silk; the actor Kirk Taylor who appeared in the Spike Lee movie School Daze. I don't know why Kim did not appear.

God Bless You,"You Make Me Feel Brand New" by The Stylistics brought tears to my eyes.

Gerald Alston & Blue Lovett always sound great although I hate that commercialized overplayed "Shining Star"! Because they have some much better more soulful tunes in their repetiore.:) I love you my brothers!

The Bluenotes, Heatwave, & Bloodstone sounded fabulous.
Eugene Record sounded good and good to see him back in fine form.

I missed the first half-hour but saw Patti LaBelle lying on the stage floor copping Jackie Wilson's stage thing! As great as Patti is and she IS one of the greats, 1.) I don't think a women should be lying on the floor. 2.) For someone who has negative things to say about Jackie Wilson she sure copped alot of his stuff from "Óver The Rainbow" & "Danny Boy" which he sang & recorded wa=a-a-y before the 'Bluebells' ever were discovered. 3.) Finally only Jackie had that lying on the stage floor as a regular part of his every show.
Now I'll probably get flake over this but really I love Patti's performances and its not meant to take anything away from her but facts are facts and thats just the way I knew it to be back in the day. Besides, I don't think Jackie got all the props & respect that was & is still due to him. Simple as that.(Smile).

Sorry, bro but I gotta disagree...Keith Wilder (Johnnie's bro) was the co-founder of Heatwave and he sounded absolutely great on "Always & Forever". He was smart to hand off the high parts to his other singer. Keith's performance was one of the better things I've seen on the show.

Eugene & the Chi-Lites...y'all know how I feel about them :)! The short fellow who likes to "ham it up" at the end of the song is the group's founder/leader Marshall Thompson, a dear friend of mine for many years who likes to make folks smile.

Patti singing "Over The Rainbow"...DAMN! Someone has gotta produce a "Patti Labelle Sings Broadway" CD!

The Blue Notes - okay, no originals in the group but geez...did the lead singer have his part down cold or what!!

Good show this time...

Nosey, Johnnie Wilder, the original lead singer on A&F, and most of their hits, became paralyzed as a result of an auto accident, years ago not long after Heatwave's initial success.
His brother Keith told me that Johnnie is doing Gospel.

Johnnie Wilder, Jr. - Keith's older brother - sang the original lead on "Always & Forever" as well as most of the jazzy-soul tunes they recorded ("Mind Blowing Decisions", "All You Do Is Dial," "Happiness, Togetherness").

Keith shared the lead vocals on the uptempo stuff Heatwave recorded ("Boogie Nights", "Grooveline", "Eyeballin'").

Hey KevGo!! How are you? Now, I had no problem with Keith. I did have a slight problem with the fella that he handed off the baton to. There are some songs that must be sung right. And I Am Telling You, Over The Rainbow & Always & Forever are those types of songs, where everyone waits to see how the singer handles those tough, high notes. A great singer such as Luther didn't try to duplicate Johnnies' work. In my opinion, this brother shouldn't have tried either. If you listen again, he just didn't quite hit those notes. It may not be fair to compare him with Johnnie's performance (which by the way, I never thought was quite pitch perfect), however that is the standard that we all use as measurement. I think that he fell a bit short. I feel that if you can't quite hit the note, leave it alone. Listen to him again & tell me what you think.

If you closed your eyes, you'd have thought that Teddy, Lloyd & the boys were back together. Their harmonies were exquisite & homeboy's got Teddy down pat. It was great seeing Eugene &
Squirrel together again. I know that Gene's been doing some Gospel, but, I hope that this is not a one shot deal. He still sounds great!!! Patti will always be PATTI!!! Nuff said!! This was an excellent show!!!

Yes, Johnnie's been doing Gospel. Here's his website: www.shalonda.com/shalondainc/Johnnie%20Wilder.htm

I was excited to see George McCrae perform as well. He had the audience in the palm of his hand. Strange, how many people from the 70's now look like their parents. (A big help might be in just getting some of those pounds off, people.)

I was disappointed to see performances of hits by Labelle and the 70's Supremes without the group's members. Will these women ever be able to get it together?

There's been some heated discussion about the Stylistics' performance. Personally, the presentation provided by the group that was featured was enough to move me emotionally as it seemed to be for many of the audience members. I was impressed by the lead singer that was on the show. I liked his all over look; the hair, suit and general demeanor. I didn't think he needed to smile or move around; he seemed a no-frills natural, an individual, and judging by the audience response, a powerful enough presence to just be calm and sing the song. Hopefully this group will be featured on television again soon.

Patti Labelle, Sarah Dash & Nona Hendrix have reunited in the past. Maybe next time T.J. Lubinsky can talk the threesome into singing together although it would be nice if Cindy Birdsong could join them as well for a Bluebells reunion.

JuiceFree:
I hear ya regarding Keith Wilder passing the baton. I guess they were trying to stay true to the original record (which is what the show's founder T.J. Lubinsky requires of all the acts). As for the Chi-lites I do hope Eugene will perform with them more often (he does show up to award inductions and special events around Chicago).

People can say what they want that lead singer of the Stylistics was awesome he sounds just like the original guy I wonder where they found him he even looks like the original.....I have to say Maxine Nightingale looked like she was trying to be Diana Ross but Yvonne Elliman and her were in fine voice. Good to see Bloodstone again I thought they were one of the best acts and something was wrong with McFadden and Whitehead they were off with the dance steps or something and one of them looked confused..but overall it was a great show,

I give T.J. big, big props, I really do. He's even passing down his love for the music to his son. I saw his son dancing & going for his at one of the more recent shows. Just saw some of Jean Terrell's performance and unfortunately she does not sound terrific---tho hard to tell as Stoned Love horribly speeded up and choppy or bad editing in clip I saw. She sounded flat at times and loss of range-and I love Jean-my fave Motown female singer. Maybe the flu affected her some. Why oh why did they make Stoned Love a speeded up Vegas tune like when Supremes perfromed in 60s in clubs and their hits speeded up-especially when everything else on the PBS show was faithful to the recordings??????? On UK TV last night 2 really good programmes were shown (soul related).
The 1st was about the dawning of the use of black models. Apart from info on black ladies utilised in fashion shoots in the 50's there was a 10 minute long section on Motown and the deportment classes / style adopted by the femme groups to attain across the board acceptance. Interviews with Mary Wilson, etc.
Later in the evening there was a documentary on the 45's found on John Lennons old jukebox. All these were his fave 45's from his formative years and were almost all by black artists including some early Motown cuts. Barrett Strong was interviewed during the programme.

Hey Nosey, what's up? I can think of a few songs that I'd like to hear them sing. How about the following:

Stoned Out Of My Mind
It's Time For Love
Take A Trip To The Islands(from Half A Love LP)
Toby
I Want To Pay You Back
You Got To Be The One
Oh Girl
A Letter To Myself
A Lonely Man
Heavenly Body
I Like Your Lovin
The Coldest Days Of My Life
You Smiled The Same Old Way
There Will Never Be Any Peace
The Sound Of Lonely
Ain't Too Much Of Nothin
Yes I'm Ready (If I Don't Get To Go)
The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face
Give More Power To The People
Homely Girl

I'd love to hear them sing a few of the above. Did I forget any?

Watching the Superstars of the Seventies on Channel 2 in Miami. Wow! Everyone's looking better and sounding better than I had hoped. But SO disappointing to know that Jean Terrell will not appear on the show. Two questions: just WHAT was up with that gaggle of back-up singers for Maxine Nightingale?? Was the guy on the right TJ's dad or something? TJ is beyond overbearing, but God bless him for pulling this act together. Supremes in '05! Stoned love, Richard

I've got a gripe about the commentators on the PBS R & B shows. I don't want to ever hear them use the word "oldies" again. What is this with using "oldies" continually to refer to this music? I've never heard them use that term to refer to Beethoven and Mozart who are certainly much older. If we're talking about music, we're talking about the quality of the music, not its age.

ANd the second gripe is how many times they say, "You may have been conceived while your parents listened to this song (usually "My Girl"). It's as if 40 years ago someone said that, and it's been used constantly since then. I even heard David Ruffin use it a number of times. And I've heard Richard Street use the term "oldies". The kiss of death.

I also read that Kathy Sledge is doing a play in Australia called "Oh...What A Night!!!" about a disco. The four Sledge sisters opened for Cher's final tour date in Toronto back in December and they have a new cd on www.sistersledge.com.

JuiceFree20! See; that's what I'm talkin bout! Sing something else besides, "Have You Seen Her". Talk about repetition.......... that song grates my nerves anymore.
