As much as I'm knocked out by his talent, I've enjoyed a couple of musical projects in which he was the primary sideman more than his own CD.
Check out his work on the Blind Boys of Alabama's "Higher Ground" CD. Robert is on every cut and he wails in particular on the title cut, a sanctified cover of the Stevie Wonder classic.
Last week at my city library I picked up a CD called "The Word" featuring Robert backed by the Noth Mississippi Allstars (the sons of famed Memphis producer Jim Dickinson and the son of Delata bluesmans R.L. Burnside). On this CD, they work out on a selection old time gospel instrumentals. You can bet I'll be burning myself a copy before this one goes back to the library. It rocks so righteously that you have to keep reminding yourself that essentially you're listening to religious music!

My favorite track on the Blind Boys of Alabama "Higher Ground" CD has a Detroit pedigree. :) Robert Randolph & the Family Band do a smokin' version of Funkadelic's "You and Your Folks" as a backing for the group's reading of Psalm 23.

Regards,
Ken

Ken, you've reminded me that, on their earlier CD "Spirit of the Century", the BB's of A do a spine-tingling version of Amazing Grace to the musical backing of "House of the Rising Sun".

Oh, and on my previous post, of course I meant to say Delta blues legend R.L. Burnside.

...I became a fan of theirs immediately after seeing the "I need more Love" video when it came out last year...

I was kind of dissapointed, though, after looking on the website at their touring schedule this year, and saw very few US dates...at least none anywhere NEAR Indiana...then I saw the schedule from last year, and was even more dissapointed to see that in October last year, they played a concert at a venue no more than TEN MINUTES from my house!! Talk about upset... :o)
