This is incredibly sad news. He will be missed. So many of our beloved artists are leaving.

In the last 20 months, I have lost my mother, four friends - including my two closest girlfriends (true sister-friends), my Godmother, my favorite aunt and my neighbor. Most of us are probably "baby boomers," so we are at that age where our peers are beginning to leave us. But there is a message for ALL of us blessed to still be here. Do not postpone joy. Love unconditionally and love a lot. Hug everybody you meet!

My sympathies to the Bristol family. I briefly met Mr. Bristol way back in November of 2002. He was a nice guy, and when I saw him first from behind as I approached a circle of soul greats, I thought "that cat looks pretty distinguished." when I broke into the circle, finally, i realized it was Johnny Bristol. And he was so nice, cordial.

He was very vital too. He is certainly with his friends who have passed before him, but he will be missed here. Love to Mr. Bristol, and thanks for the music.

Top of pageBottom of page   By Dennis Coffey (64.12.96.102) on Sunday, March 21, 2004 - 08:35 pm:

Hello everyone. This is sad news. I just spoke to Billy Wilson from the Motown Alumni Association and he said Johnny was at a recording session with Carolyn Crawford and didn't feel well. He cancelled the session and went upstairs to lay down. He had a heart attack and never woke up. He was a great guy and a talented song writer/ producer. I played on "Hang in There Baby" when I lived in LA and played with Johnny during "Someday We'll be Together" at the Rhythm, Love and Soul PBS special last year. I also played with Edwin Starr on the same special shortly before he died. It seems like all of the good guys are slowly leaving us. Rest in Peace Johnny.

Sad news indeed.
I was very impressed by his performance at the Jazz Cafe in London..I think in the early 90's.
He was sharing billing with Sam Dees and to be honest it was really Sam that I went to see. Johnny gave such an exciting, energetic and soulful show, taking hold of the audience and entertaining them with his music. His personality really came across and it was evident that he was enjoying his work. All my unfair/unfounded preconceptions evaporated and I left as a fan of his music forever.
A hugely talented producer,songwriter & singer.
My condolences to his family and friends.

"SOMEDAY... WE'LL BE TOGETHER"

Many New York radio stations (pop and R&B) are playing "Someday We'll Be Together" announcing: That great song is by Diana Ross AND The Supremes... AND the late Johnny Bristol! Besides writing and producing that unforgetable #1 song, his singing part on that song is priceless. It's nice to know "Someday" is currently in the Diana Ross & The Supremes' #1s c.d. A truly supreme,
everlasting tribute.

Hey Folks:
I just came back from my weekend with my Lady-Love in Wisconsin and I'm saddened to be reading this about Johnny Bristol.

An excellent songwriter & producer he was indeed.

Right now he's having a beautiful jam session with Junior Walker ("What Does It Take") and his arranger Gene Page ("Hang On In There Baby") in Soul Heaven.

Rest well, Johnny.

I'm really shocked at this news - a great loss.

I was fortunate enough to meet Johnny in the early
nineties when he made an appearance at the Kilt
in Newmains (in Scotland). I'm sure everybody there was as grateful as I was to get the opportunity to see a soul legend in a pub in the back of beyond - a small town about 20 miles east of Glasgow. Johnny was so approachable and so
easy to talk to - a lovely man.

The only good thing I can think is that he won't be around to see his good name dragged through
the mud in a distasteful court case.

Thanks for the music Johnny - I'll always remember
you as a real gentleman.

Oh my God! I just can't believe it. I just heard one of his songs on the radio just this morning. I still can't believe he's gone. It feels like he's still here. It didn't occur to me that he was gone until I heard the news on the radio while my mom was bringing me to school.

Another one of the Riff Brothers + One has been struck down. It's a real tragic thing to lose one of the members of the Motown family. I saw a picture of Johnny on Yahoo when he was at Motown. He was going over a song with Tammi Terrell and Cholly Atkins was there. I don't know if I could get on the forum, but I can try. But I'll need Collins' help.
