Mel,
Gowen was owned by Charles Lotman who lived on Gowen ave(hence the name) and Barry Golder who was a principle in the Mainline label.
I remember going to Charles' home when I was a kid, right after the success of the Intruders' record.

There was a Renee Records in Chicago, and one in Philadelphia (at one time, distributed by Lost Nite Records). They might be confused because the Philadelphia label pressed up "Young Boy" by Barbara Green (e), a 1964 Chicago Record, as an oldie, a few years later.

Garo,
The Kit Kats were an axcelent self contained band who played on theeir own sessions and Bob Finiz (RIP) of the Four Jays, was a very musical producer.
Mel, Im not that familiar with the output from the labels which you mention.

Mel, the Whiz label that issued the Gene Vell
record was distributed by Jamie/Guyden but I can't
remember where it's from - I'll see if I've any
more info on it but I've a feeling it's not a
Philly record.
There were at least four different labels called
Whiz - and at least four different Renee labels

Flynny,
Don-El/Alpha/Chestnut were owned by C. Percy (Don) White, a realtor and cemetary owner from North Philly.
He was a nice guy and looked kinda like Harry Belafonte.
When Wally O (his "a&r man") got me my first session with him at the age of 15,my mom made him sign a promisory note for $20 because of all the times some of us have not been paid by certain people.
He brought the $20 to my house before the session!!
Chestnut, was his country imprint, as he also had a love of country music as well.
he recorded mainly at Sound Plus which was only a two track studio but menaged to get hits recorded there such as Mixed up shok up girl and Wonderful dream.

E: This has nothing to do with this thread but I was trying to remember my tutors name who came to my home when I couldn't go to school because I was in a full body cast in 1964! Her name was Mrs. Slotkin! That is sooo weird because I was trying to remember her name just last week!
By Eli (68.236.53.71) on Monday, March 22, 2004 - 04:35 pm: |
Nosey,
The guys name was Herb Slotkin who ran the Grand label.
His office was run out of Treegoobs furniture store on lancaster ave in the "Bottom".
Georgie Woods always ran adverts for Treegoobs and did some in store things there waaaaay back in the serious day.
