Blue Mitchell, the trumpeter, passed away in the mid 70's.

Does anyone know if Detroit Native Dave "Baby" Cortez (born Dave Cortez Clowney)is still living? His biggest record was "Happy Organ". He lived in N.Y.C. in the 60's and had an office downstairs next to the old Birdland/then Lloyd Price's Turntable Club on Broadway near 52nd. Street.

I remember Sweet Sensation, but not that song? They broke up ages ago. Don't know what they're doing now. I think the lead singer had cancer or something of that nature. I believe they were in the midst of the "freestyle" era a al Expose, etc.

I remember Dave Baby --I think he may be in that book One Hit Wonders. Where is Claudine Clark?

Soulaholic:
"Sneakin' Up Behind You" now that was a jam from '75!

I have 2 Brecker Bros. albums, "The Brecker Bros." from '75 and "Back To Back" from '76. I don't know if there were any more. There's a cut from the first one called "Skunk Funk" that was hot. The 2nd one had a two great cuts IMO, "Grease Piece" and a vocal "What Can A Miracle Do."

The group "members" read like a who's who list of session players - David Sanborn, Will Lee, Don Grolnick, Steve Khan, Christopher Parker.

They are "joined by" Ralph MacDonald, Harvey Mason, Steve Gadd, Sammy Figueroa. The 2nd album has vocals arranged by Luth Vandross.

A supergroup of players that got together for a mid 70's romp.

The Sweet Sensation that did "Sad sweet dreamer" was a duet. They came from England. This was a big hit during the disco heyday.

I know not what became of Sweet Sensation.

The Breckers also had a couple of nice albums in the late '70s and early '80s. I never heard "Straphangin'" but I wore out both "Don't Stop The Music" and "Detente". They even got back together in the mid '90s.

Whatever happened to the group "Jade". Their "Don't Walk Away" was a classic. They were here one minute and gone the next. I miss them.

I heard that Jade had already broken up by the time their album came out. A shame, good group.

The Breckers are still extremely active. Both are still sought after session players and (I believe) both have released solo projects. The only thing that has really changed about them is the fact that they are no longer in the same band.

Hello Everyone.

Welcome back Soulaholic .. there were rumours going around that you'd been trapped in your Aladdins cave of soulful goodies!!

That CALENDAR record you mention to me sounded like a pre-cursor of the BRASS CONSTRUCTION sound. I have it on a U.K All-Platinum 45 and it always sounds very similar to "Movin'" to me, but it came out about a year before.

And didn't THE BRECKER BROTHERS do the horns on "Pick Up The Pieces" by THE AVERAGE WHITE BAND?

Cornbread .. on the subject of SWEET SENSATION, they weren't a duet, they were a group of brothers from Manchester, England. The lead singer (Marcel?) was only about 13 at the time, which could explain why they sounded like a duet to you. "Sad Sweet Dreamer" went to #1 in the U.K. and they were hailed as "The New Jackson Five" but they had one more hit here "Purely By Co-incidence" and then faded away from view.

I don't know what happened to them.

Roger

Hey Roger: Thanks for the correction re: Sweet Sensation. I recall the only image I saw when the record was hot was a picture of a boy and girl dressed in clown outfits. I thought these two made up the croup.

Top of pageBottom of page   By Dayo (81.136.181.172) on Friday, March 19, 2004 - 08:39 am:

Marcel had a track on an EP issued by Factory Records around 1980 (?) If memory serves They were discovered on a UK TV talent show (New Faces, I think).

Tony Hatch was one of the judges and signed em up. He wrote Sad Sweet Dreamer, which actually aint a bad song is it?

Off topic, but Tony Hatch also wrote Pet Clarks "Downtown"... that makes him truly world class in my book!

Roger:
The Brecker Bros. were session players on all of the AWB Atlantic albums from '74-79.

The single version of "Sneakin' Up Behind You" broke out right after Pick Up The Pieces hit and I remenmber some people confusing the cuts.

Randy Brecker was also an early member of Blood Sweat and Tears. The Breckers, individually and collectively, have worked with a Who's-Who of artists from the jazz and pop sides of the aisle, including Duke Pearson, Joe Henderson, The Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Big Band, John Lennon, Eric Clapton, Charles Mingus, Horace Silver, Art Blakey, Billy Cobham, James Taylor and on and on. The Breckers are Who's-Who entries themselves.

Good evening to all,

I agree with you souljunkie, The Fruit Song was funny. L.Js sister was alright with that one. I thought that she was good. I was sad to learn of her tragic demise, I always wondered what went wrong. I would have like to hear more from her, it was so sad.
