One of my favourite groups was the Soul Brothers Six, who recorded in Philly (I believe)
Did any of our esteemed philly men work with them. As good as their records are, I often think when listening to them that horns would have improved them. In a period when every Soul artist had horns on their records, why didn't they ? And where is their fantastic lead vocallist ; was his name Willie John Ellison ?
A favourite record of mine is "Your love has got me chained and bound" by Alfreda Brockington. A powerhouse of a record and performance. However when you play it, it seems to speed up. Did any of you work on this, and is the speeding up the musicians or the equipment ?

Keith,
Hang on to this question. It sounds like one our Bobby Eli might have an answer to. He gets out of the hospital today and hopefully he will appear in the very near future.

I think the Soul Brothers Six were a self contained band that is they played instruments in addition to singing. I've only heard "Some Kind Of Wonderful" and it's good, but it doesn't sound like the work of top notch studio players.
It's possible that they didn't have horns because none of the six played horns. Just a theory...

I love the SB6. To me their stuff is like Garage Band Soul; all guitars and drums and raw energy. I have all their singles on Atlantic, some of which were produced by Jerry Greenberg and Arif Mardin, but even those have stripped-down arrangements.

I don't have any serious in-depth knowledge, but i do know that "Thank You.." was issued on Atlantic 2592 as the B-side of "Somebody Else is Loving My Baby". I would guess that it was issued in 1968 as it was near the end of their Atlantic run.

STEVE,YOUR SPOT ON WITH YOUR INFO,IVE GOT THE DISC ON AN ATLANTIC DEMO,THERES NO DATE ON IT,BUT IT IS,AS YOU SAY AROUND THE 1968 ERA.YET AGAIN WE HAVE A GREAT TALENT,AND EXCELLENT VOICED JOHN ELLISON(AS WERE THE GUYS BACKING HIM).TO ME,A VOICE VERY DISTINCT,AS SOON AS YOU HEAR IT.(IN THE SAME MOULD AS THE LEAD VOCALISTS,SAY OF THE TAMS OR THE OLYMPICS ETC,TO ME ANYWAY).IM WAFFLING NOW,MANY THANX FOR THE IN-PUT,MUCH APPRECIATED.MEL(ANDTHENSOME)P.S.IM A TOTALLY 60S UPTEMPO FANATIC,BUT THE ALFREDA BROCKINGTON ON PHIL-A-OF-SOUL,(AROUND 71/72)STOMPS WITH THE BEST OF THEM.

Keith - if you like that Alfreda track, then you'll probably love her unissued at the time (but now out on Goldmine), "Don't cry over spilt milk". Same kinda uptempo dancer and recommended.
