Yeah but next issue, September, is their Detroit issue -- that's the one to check out.

Has Mojo ever done any features on Philly soul?

I occasionally buy MOJO, and i have not seen any major article on philly, otherwise i would have bought it. Maybe someone has, but for that matter no one has to my knowledge done an article on Motown especially behind the scenes. I have copies with aricles on Marvin Gaye and the tempts, and maybe one or two others, but that's it. Please correct me if i am wrong.
Sue any advance info you have about the september issue would be appreciated.

Well the September Mojo is about Detroit music through the years, including today's hot pop scene, so the White Stripes are on the cover. I have a story in it about Martha Reeves's favorite Motown songs -- it's the feature where a person "burns" their ideal CD, and they tell why they like each cut. And Dennis Coffey was saying a few weeks ago that a British writer was supposed to interview him for the Detroit issue as well. He can tell us if that happened ...

They did run a lot of stuff from Ben Edmonds' What's Going On book, because it was published under their imprint.

Sue

My litle 1 minute of fame in the August Mojo wasn't even credited!! Boo hoo

..you talk about a September issue...but it's only July....in any case, is Mojo in America different from the one in the UK?

Nope there's only one Mojo, we don't have a different one in the States.

Lenny Kaye was just in town researching an article on Fortune Records for Mojo, so presumably it will be a part of the same issue.

I might have a nice picture of Fortune from a few years ago to share with the forum...just as soon as that man Ritchie sorts me out this scanner problem.......which leaves me with huge file sizes...

If anyone has a photo of the front of the Fortune building taken in the late '50s or early '60s, please let me know.

Hello everyone. I did an interview with Lois for MOJO Magazine about two weeks ago. I don't know for sure which issue it will be in.

Hello All,
I believe MOJO did an article about the rise of
the Temptations (I think Sly & the Family Stone was on the cover) that covered Norman Whitfield's relationship with the group and the creation of "Cloud Nine" at the musicians workshop. Dennis Coffey was mentioned as was James Jamerson & the drummer who played hi-hat on the track. I have the issue at home & will post the issue date.(Unless someone does that first.)

I read the vinyl junkie article in the current edition.....it's about Invictus. Do all check it out cos the label gets very little attention these days. I appreciate this forum will find nothing new there but it's still nice to see all these albums together like this.

I think the writer selected what was considered to be notable albums by most of the artists...I disagree with their choices particularly as they didn't choose Freda Payne's "Contact" (boo hoo) - I considered "Contact" to be one of the best albums EVER made and still do.

For the experts here, it's interesting to properly inspect the album covers to see which ones were not true original albums (or a 12" single release either I might add)! Sadly you get no prizes for spotting them except that I will allow you to wear a hat that says "you know it all" LOL!

Also mentioned is the Music Merchant label...they value Sliced Tomatoes on MM1008 - but that is not the usual way to find that song...for those that are interested, the song was actually issued 3 (yes THREE) times on Music Merchant. MM1008 has a top side of "Things Will Be Better Tomorrow". I thought I was the only one who had that 45 when it was issued originally. That was a hard one to get!

The album "Love And Beauty" is pictured on it's side (check the Invictus logo on the bottom right!!). It goes on to say that "Black Bach" was issued before Love And Beauty - not true. I bought L&B in London when his first ABC was also in the shops - I had to choose between the two and chose "Love And Beauty"....oh for the days when a US album cost an arm and a leg.

When Brenda Holloway was at the Ritz in Manchester with Kim Weston, I was chatting with her about the Music Merchant tracks "Some Quiet Place" and "Let Love Grow". "Oh..." she says, "...they should have come out on Invictus, I don't know how I ended up on Music Merchant. D'ya know I cut more than an album's worth of material for Invictus including some of the songs that were hits for other artists. (I had to have someone pick me up off the floor when she told me that!!)

There is a free CD with the August edition...a guy named Slim Smith does a version of a song made famous by Gladys Knight, the Temps and of course, our little lovelies themselves, THE VELVELETTES - "Everybody Needs Love"

john you being the x spert on invictus, could you please tell me ,who was lucifer ,this was on invictus usa, i found the album in my collection ,
but had never played ,it is definetly weird ,to say the least, yes iagree that that contact was one hellva a album, also i think the barrino brothers ,should have got a mention and the music merchant comp cd was not mentioned at all,
unless it is deleted? there must be enough in the vault for a second music mechant comp,i remember
b.i.n.g.o. and a couple of smith connection b sides were always being requested when i was spinning at la duce and the student prince in london way back in 73

Lucifer.....well, that group really didn't seem to fit in with the rest of the acts on the label. The album didn't even have a picture of the group.

Their recordings had limited 45 releases but they did have an album - all the songs were composed by Eugene Smith except for Bloodshot Eyes which was composed by John Fautey.

The album was co-ordinated by William Weatherspoon (enough of a reason for me to think about buying it) and arranged by Tony Camillo (more reasons to think about buying it) and Lucifer, engineered by Lawrence Horn and Barney Perkins (by this time, I had my wallet out AND paid for it!!)

The group consisted of lead vocals from Eugene Smith (tenor, guitar, harmonica and conga)
Bobby Washington - Bass, vocal background
Christian Kooy - acoustic and electric guitar
Paul Beedham - Percussion and vocal background
John Fautey - Trumpet, flugelhorn, Electric piano, piano and vocal background
David Dobbs - Alto sax, electric piano, vocal background
Bob Cove - Trombone
Chris Sydlowski - baritone and alto sax

Tracks are:

Pearl For A Girl
Old Mother Nature
In A Garden
Don't You (think The Times-A-Comi')
For Kids Only

Time Gonna Change Everything
Bloodshot Eyes
Have You Heard
Laugh
We Gotta Go

The album was from 1971

thanks john came up with the info i required ,is this the same baby washington ,who had all those singles out in his own name? because i was always a invictus/hot wax/music merchant freak, the luccifer and ruth copeland lps were a let down for me personnaly, but look what a investment they have been ,even though i havent a clue what luccifers album is worth? do you? ,i missed the lamont dozier album even though i stubbled across the macinley jackson one in oxfam ,3 years ago.
another let down was the uk release of "silent boat" i thought it was boring ,so i gave it away as a prize in a quiz ,stupid me its worth £12 now
to me its not the cost ,its the personel enjoyment, but it would be nice to leave as a valable collection, when iam gone.to my other half

I am not aware of 45's by Bobby Washington....but I am of 45's by Baby Washington!! LOL

I think I understand what you mean by a let down...the sound on those ones you mentioned was not that conventional Invictus Sound.....the Warlock album was (in general) not the conventional sound either......

I was even a bit shocked about Parliament's "Little Ole Country Boy"...and I am still not not sure why I still have that one in my collection!
