I was just wondering if anyone knows where 'You've Got Pay The Price' by Gloria Taylor was recorded.

It sounds very much like the Funks on it. I have the UK release on Polydor and the date on it is 1969. The B-side (Loving You And Being loved By You) also sounds like a Detroit cut in the mould of those tracks found on the Steve Mancha/J.J Barnes 'Rare Stamps' Album.

Both recordings are credited as "An SSS International USA Recording" with the producer as S.Wisehunt.

I would be interested to if anyone knows anymore on this track.

Cheers

Paul

The instrumental of "Got to Pay the Price" was done at United. (Dennis is paying the git!!) I have never heard the Gloria Taylor vocal of it. Maybe Wingate had Danny OVD a vocal on the track.

There was a guy named Wisenhunt or something like that. I worked with him once at United but he was a Terra Shirma client and I think we took the session as a favor to Ralph or Russ. Perhaps he bought the track from Wingate and OVDed the vocal on it!

Ralph might be able to tell you more about him.

Pax,
Ed

Thanks For the info Ed.

Wisenhunt is the correct name - typo error on my part!

Just listened to it and as far as I can tell the backing track is not the Al Kent version which I thought it might be when I first came across it a few years ago.

Also the B-side sounds more like one of those Darrell Banks Solid Hitbound tracks than the Barnes/Mancha stuff that I said.

Cheers

Paul

PS - Ed checkout the 'Darrell Banks Here To Stay Sessions' thread. Maybe you could answer some of my questions

Sorry I can't shed any more light on this than Ed.

Now there's a guy I'd like to learn more about. Walter Wisenhunt. He really got around. I have things produced by him in Texas, like Vicki Anderson's early records and groups like the Webs.
Last I heard, he was in California. Anyone know how to get in touch with him? He was very prolific, yet so few people seem to know anything about him.

Wisenhunt was Gloria Taylors Husband. She recorded for his 'Whiz' label, from memory, a track written by Steve Mancha. Am at work so can't check my collection right now but I also have records by Gloria on 'Glo-Whiz'(Gloria - Wisenhunt).

If I remember correctly, SSS was Shelby Singleton's label and was based in the South (Nashville?). He was the guy who bought Sun Records in the late sxities. If I'm remembering the right outfit, wasn't SSS also the source of Peggy Scott and Jo Jo Benson?

Wisenhunt produced that one-off Doris Troy
single on Capitol in late '67

Don't think so. The Wisenhunt connection with Texas fits in well with Lelan Rogers...label owner of Silver Fox and International Artists etc...oh, and brother of Kenny! :-o
