It is my undertanding that Motown acquired certain Ric-Tic masters, including some 4-tracks.
Is the ADOS version on recent Starr Motown CDs the original Ric-Tic version? Is there a stereo version of the original Ric-Tic version? Thanks.

You ought to try the Soul Master LP for stereo versions of the Ric Tic 45's....about the best you will get!

I've never heard a stereo mix of 00 Soul. Every "stereo" version I've ever heard is rechannelled mono.

Talking of ADOS, has anyone seen, or got, a copy of the promotional film that was allegedly made. In nearly 30 years of collecting I've never come across anyone who has even seen it never mind got a copy.

Thanks John and Ritchie. I still want to know if the Motown versions of ADOS are the from the Ric-Tic masters? They sound like the originals but I don't have my old 45 to compare them.

Hi Chip

Sorry - I thought that was implied. As far as I've always believed, the Motown releases have simply been taken from the original masters that they acquired when BG bought out Mr Wingate. I'm sure 00 Soul is the original - if not, it's a perfect clone! Also, S.O.S features the great Mike Terry's baritone sax, so logic says it couldn't be a re-cut. Mr Terry was no longer working for Motown by the time Edwin Starr joined Motown.

Similarly, Harlem, and Back Street sound exactly like the originals, so I have no reason to believe that Motown did anything other than reissue the original masters. For album release, presumably they were remixed in stereo - or "rechannelled" where only mono masters existed. Any comments, anyone?

Soul Master - currently being remastered as part of a two-fer with 25 Miles in the UK - included the original versions of those songs in question. They were re-channeled mono. They are not recuts there or on any of the compilations through the years.

BTW, the LP reissue will use the original mono masters from which the fake stereo tape was made.

Thanks for confirming the above. It's a welcome feeling for me to actually get something right for a change ;o)

P.S. Good news re the Edwin twofer. I never managed to get hold of a copy of Soul Master, so I guess that's two copies of the CD pre-sold already for you!

Harry,

How about giving Russ, Bob and me a chance to remix those GW 4 tracks to stereo. I'm sure Bob would love to do a stereo remix on the San Remo stuff!! Same with Russ on Edwin!!! I would like to get my hands on the Parlament again as well as some of the Reflections stuff.

I've got a 4 track Otari here and I could even cobble up a 3 track head in the head mount if needed to do split offs and preserve all the tracks from the bounce downs to seperate digital tracks. I'm set to do 24/96 mixes direct to the computer. You know how good the monitor system is and you could walk away with .wav or .aiff mixes on CDR.

This is not against forum rules Ralph, I'm begging him!!! Only Bob, Russ and I can pull this off and now is the chance.

We all may be here for the get together next year!!! Think about it.

Can you guys please play the stereo vinyl album "Soul Master" and listen to the Ric Tic tracks "Headline News" and "SOS". Your ears will tell you the truth.

However, I agree that Agent 00 Soul is NOT true stereo but "rechannelled to give a stereo effect"

Just one small flaw in your excellent suggestion... you have to actually have a copy of Soul Master to be able to decide!

Ed,
This has nothing to do with forum rules in the least. What a concept....you , Bob and Russ re-mixing all the GW stuff. If you could pull that one off Ed I'm nominating you for sainthood.

Now all you have to do is talk to Russ!!! I already talked to Bob last night!!! (Bob, Russ and Ed...The unholy trinity)

Hey does anyone know what American TV show used Edwin Starr's "War" as a theme song?? It was a legal type show I believe ...

Some allegedly stereo tracks appeared on the UK Ric-Tic Relics album butwere largely appallingly done rechannelled mono. Somebody at EMI UK deserved a good kicking for that album as it was a badly judged affair all round at a time when interest was at a peak. A real missed opportunity.

I agree - and so did everyone else at the time. This really was a wasted opportunity that won UK Motown few friends. The sound on the rechannelled mono tracks made them virtually unlistenable. BTW, the senior engineer at the studio I worked at back then always used to refer to EMI's reprocessing as "drainpipe stereo". Good description.
