I spent the day in Santa Cruz California yesterday to see the band The Rock And Roll All Stars. Peter Rivera, formerely of The Sunliners/ Rare Earth is a member of the band and we always get together when they come to town. Great band. Terrific show. More on Peter soon.
While I was there I ran into former famed WKNR disc jockey Sean Conrad. I first met Sean when he came into Tera Shirma in 1968. I told him about THE FORUM and he told me he would visit us. Sean is a great guy and he was a wonderful, influential DJ on Detroit radio. I'm sure he has many interesting stories to share with us. I hope to see him post sometime today. Please welcome him with me when he appears.

Harry,
Thanks for the info on the Keener site. Very interesting. Sean told me yesterday that he also has tape archives of his radio show. Along with Lee Allen's tapes, radio of the past may no longer be a thing of the past. I told Sean that it would be cool if he, like Lee, would make some of his shows available to us.

With lots of WKNR air checks (courtesy of Bob Green), CKLW, WJBK and other treats. Great fun to listen to ...--Sue

In addition to reelradio.com there's another great radio site called Rock Radio Scrapbook. the address is
home.istar.ca/~rockroll
It's not as extensive in the airchecks department but has a lot of great info (Obituaries, Lineups-by-year for various cities' stations etc.) Plenty of great stuff.

Also, you can buy cassettes of old Top 40 radio shows from The Aircheck Factory, Wildrose, Wisconsin (that's the only address you need, minus the zip code; you'll have to look that up..). They have an amazing selection from all over the country from the late '40s thru the '80s. The only bummer is, there's hardly anything from Detroit radio; a couple tapes of CKLW in the '70s, but that's it..

Well hopefully guys like Lee Allen and Sean Conrad can remedy that situation mhc.

Geeze pal...forgive me for mis-spelling your name. It's Lee A-L-A-N...ON THE HORN.
I was up very late last night Lee....sorry.

Wow, I had no idea that keener radio had disappeared from Detroit around the same time I did.

"Underground" FM radio actually started in Detroit with Larry Miller's Saturday night folk show on what at the time was a classical music station. (Was it WDTM or maybe even WABX?) Anyhow Miller moved to San Francisco, talked a small, unprofitable FM station into turning his free-form idea into an "alternative" format to top 40 and the rest is history. Lee Abrams, the current head of XM programming, was the guy who took Larry's "underground" format and tightened up the playlist into "album rock" exactly the way keener had tightened up top 40.

Well I don't know where Sean can be. I would have hoped he would have appeared by now. I swear John Lester, I didn't even mention your name.I'll see if I can track him down.

You mean besides some female John? He seemed really interested in coming on here so I don't quite know what to think. I had a long heart to heart with Peter Rivera on Saturday and he promised he would come on also. I have to call him tomorrow when he gets back from the road and I'm going to set something up.I think he would be a welcome addition to the forum. He really is a great guy and everyone here will like him I'm sure.

It's Good to see Sean here. I first met Sean at Tera Shirma. He just started at WKNR and was helping a band from Rockford Ill. He told me later that not knowing the Detroit area, he just opened the phone bood and put his finger on the first studio he saw. Well, the night of the session was are first meeting, and ever since that night, we have been best buds ... even now we are working together in Santa Cruz. The year we met was 1968!

If you think that is bad, wait until you see what I have in store for you.

You see all those moves that the wrestlers do on TV, well, I shall be testing a new position which I call the "ex-wife grip" - it manages to make you squirm, empty your pockets full of cash and take your house all in one swoop!

All I need to do is get my address book out and make a few phone calls.....unless of course, Russ decides to come back here quicker than you can say - Jimmy Bell!!

What can I say John? At this point I'd Love To Be As Heavy As Jesus. Good thing wrestleing is all fake anyway, since what would be coming out of my pockets would be mostly lint.

I just received an e-mail from Sean Conrad. He was tagged for jury duty so he will be unavailable for a few days. I'll call him and perhaps he will appear here next week.
