Hi,

I collect obscure/odd-ball label & obscure group 45s from the 50s and 60s. I always try to find out as much info as I can about the record, label, and artist. The 45 I have in question is by a mid 60s solid soul female group, The Jobettes - What You Gonna Do b/w No Explanation. Label is Kevin Records #2268. No location of label is indicated. (I tried like heck to upload the image, following the instructions posted here and in your "upload images" thread, but it still doesn't work for me! I never got that message to "upload image"!!) Anyway, is this a Detroit label and/or a Detroit group? Is there any connection between the group Jobettes, and Gordy's Jobete? Thanx for your help.

Nikki
P.S. The label images posted on your Gordy/Jobete thread are AWESOME! Most I've never seen or heard of before! Cool stuff!

I don't know the 45, but I've never run across it in or around Detroit, and it doesn't look like a local record. The fact that the company is Kevin Knox Enterprises LTD. instead of INC. suggests that it is from Canada.

By the way, are you Nikki of Nikki's Nook? If so, I've bought some records from you in the past, and have seen a website where you are pictured with members of the Satintones and other early Motown performers. Interesting stuff.

Hi Joe,

You're right on both counts! I wear two different hats! I AM Nikki from NikkisNook, and I am also Dowoplady and half owner/producer of Harmony Haven web site (with my "better" half, Jim Dunn), along with Harmony Train web cast shows! The pictures you are referring to above are from our trip to Detroit in 1998 where we spent several days/eves with 4 members of the Satintones (Jim Ellis, Chico Leverett, Vern Williams, Robert Bateman), also Jay Johnson of the Diablos, Joe Weaver of the Don Juans, and several of the Royal Holidays, and a few others. I've emailed SEVERAL times to Chico Leverett and Jim Ellis about this wonderful site here, giving them the URL info and to COME ON AND POST, but for whatever reason, they don't! So I just keep them abreast of things going on here. Same for Jay Johnson who just got on line and still getting his feet wet with email!!! I also sent all 3 of them the poster ad from one of your other threads, of that awesome show on July 20 in your area! (Boy do I wish I could be there!!!) Chico knows all the artists on the bill. Whomever is putting on this show, if you are reading this post, and want to get the Satintones and/or Jay Johnson, onto the bill, please let me know and I'll forward that to them! Then for sure, you will hear from them!!! (smile!!).

Anyway, I am the same Nikki! I love this site and this forum! I'm learning so much. I just can't stay away too long!!

Nikki
PS - I apologize for not sticking to the specific thread here. Feel free to "move" my post to the appropriate thread if necessary!!!

"No explanation" had a few spins on the Northern Soul scene in the mid 80's. It's not a Detroit piece as far as I'm aware, and is usually in sales boxes over here in the UK at £20 and less.

Thanx to all of you for your help. So I take it the group name Jobettes (with 2 "t's") is no connection to Gordy's Jobete (with one "t")???? Anyone have the names (first and last) of the ladies singing on this record? I featured it on a radio guest show some years ago, and no-one here in the NY/NJ area ever heard of the song, the group, or the label!!!

I picked up the Jobbettes 45 in New Orleans some years ago. The 'No Explanation' track is a 'Nowhere To Run' Vandellas soundalike. The flip side 'What You Gonna Do' is a superb 'crossover' soulful mid ballad, which I played at the Yarmouth Soul Weekender about 4 years ago to some acclaim. Kevin Knox, the label owner is a Canadian entertainer (he did a stint in Las Vegas recently) which supports the suggestion by Joe Moorhouse, above.
