Hi Flynny,
Those D-Town label releases 8016, 8018 and 9040 are not the same as Mike Hanks' label. I believe Lee Rogers started up another D-Town company after he moved from Detroit. I am still in Japan so don't have access to my info' at the moment.
Is the Bonnie label the same as The Magnetics 45?
Cheers, Graham

The Bonnie label is indeed the same, Graham.

-p.p.s. Anyone know a Detroit female group track called "You're so serious"?

Flynny, Graham

D-Town was apparently resurrected in the late
'80's / early 90's - I remember seeing a
classified ad. in Goldmine which showed the
D-Town logo and wondered what the hell was
going on. Unfortunately I no longer have the
magazine but I seem to recall an address in
Denver of all places.

There was also talk in the early '90's that
Merrell Fankhauser, leader of psych band MU
was to record for D-Town which he said was
a "Motown subsidiary". As far as I know nothing
ever came of it.

Hi Davie, The "new" D-Town company had a Web site at one time and I remember reading about their latest discs, but that was about 5 years ago now.

Flynny, I spent an hour or more yesterday putting the B-sides to nearly all the records on your list in a separate Word document. When I went to cut and paste it into a message here, it wouldn't take (something about an overloaded server said the message I got). Later I tried and for some reason it wouldn't paste. So I woke up this morning determined to try again when, for reasons too arcane to go into, my computer deleted the document. Perhaps you could fill me in on which records you have already received information about, so I don't have to recreate the whole thing. Then tomorrow (Thursday) I'll fill in the gaps.

Riley's 8785 - Outcry - Gravy Covered Fruitcake

Rose 500 - Priscilla Page - Dreaming

Samo 474 - Soul Partners - Hot Mama

Some other notes:
SVR 482 was actually HBR 482 and is listed with Ian's info. The correct A-Side title of SVR 104, Quintette Plus, is Work Song, not Work Shop.

The two TCB sides listed were unreleased and, based on the notes in the Kent CD called Dave Hamilton's Detroit Dancers, were apparently not assigned B-sides. According to that document, TCB only released two singles--Sue Ann Jones and the Barrino Brothers. All the others listed were recorded but never issued.

I sold a Davis and Joe on Theoda to an occasional contributer to this forum, so maybe he can chip in with the B-side info on that. I also just loaned my Underwood and George on Volume to a friend, so I should be able to supply that one when it's returned to me. I may also have info about that Caravelles on Starmaker, but I can't seem to put my hands on it right now.

The remaining Millage records are a mystery to me. As far as I'm aware, I've never seen them. Another I've never seen but would love to hear is Clifford Binns on Theoda. Is it anywhere near as good as his Carrie record?

Davie, Joe & Flynny

Is Theoda a Detroit label? I just found a copy of J E Morgan 'By My Side' and, apart from Ann Perry, I didn't know any other 45s on the label.

I bought the record at the same time as meeting Dennis Coffey in Beating Rhythm. It played fine in the shop but my warped mind affected the record and when I put it on the turntable at home, the needle had vertigo as it dived off the vinyl. Any non brutal suggestions for flattening the warp?

Strange, I posted a listing yesterday but it's never arrived. Here's another attempt!

Big D 850 - this is on the Riley's label (not Big D)...
850 A - New Kind of Jerk (Diamond Jerk)
850 B - Diamond Jerk (New Kind of Jerk)

DMD 105 - I'm Not Your Toy
MAH'S 000.1 - The Party Stomp
MAH'S 000.8 - Cider Spider
MAH'S 0015 - All Over You
Master 1030 - Know What You're Doing
Master 65-5 - Bring Back The Love
I reckon Markie was a Chicago based label.
Northern 3732 - You're The One
Northern - 3748 - Memories
Reel 117 - Power Of Love (also on Bon and Carlton)
Reel 250 - The Slider (different label to above)
SAMO 1147 - You Say You Love Me
Spin 002 - Baby

I read in the "Before Motown" book that Staff issued jazz records in the 50s; Maybe this is one of them?
Joe, I can put Clifford Binns on a tape for you.

Volume 111 - He's Gonna Put You Down

All the best, Graham - back in Taiwan.
PS - Flynny - England were a massive disappointment.

Jo Ann Garrett was released on Chess1959 in 1966.

I've got Wally Cox's name next to my Universal Studio notes. I am unsure if this means he owned it or just recorded there!

The Lendo label is actually Lando, just misspelled. Promos of Rufus Wonder have the spelling with an e. Stock copies have the spelling with an a, though the label design is slightly different from that of other Lando records (e.g., Carl Carlton).

The Soul Merchants 45 was on Tri-City (out of Saginaw, if I remember right--somewhere near there, anyway) and on Moonville USA. The flip is called Tender Loving Care--two excellent sides.

Lloyd W. Williams is a Detroit record on Soul Beat. Someone put up a scan of it on this site within the past month, but I don't remember where; it might have been in a thread about posting images. Although I haven't seen a copy of it on ABC, I have seen listings for it on that label, so apparently it was picked up for national release, though I don't know if it got past the promo stage. The B-side is Be Mine Tonight and is funky. A-side is pure soul.

Ian -

"Watch your step now" as by "the Motor City Runners" was on a 1988 Charly (UK) album called Motor City Magic Vol 2 - don't know any other source.

It was the band track to an as yet unissued cut by the Headliners (of "We call it fun" on VIP "fame") called "Watch your step", which surfaced on various collectors' tape around the same time.

Do you hear the Funk Brothers on this track?

Lloyd Williams also on ABC 11195 (3/69) with
"Be Mine Tonight" as the b-side. Presumably the
same coupling as Soul Beat 17158.

Soul Merchants on Moonville USA 1111 (1970)
flip - Tender Loving Care
I think Moonville USA was a subsidiary of
Choker Campbell's Tri-City label based in
Saginaw.

Sweeping up now:
Edd Henry flipside is an inst take of "I love only you", which was also cut by Carl Carlton on Lando as the flip to his "So what" (3047 & 8527 on WDs).
The Topics is indeed on Dream (#204) out of Chicago and is still mega rare!
Both Motor City Runners tracks were on master tapes acquired by Charly Records licensed from Johnny Powers.
Dave Hall's "Look at me" shares the same backing track as Jimmy Mack's "Go on" on the flip to his "My World is on fire" on Palmer #5019.
I once included Jo Ann Garrett's "Whole new plan" on a album compilation and one reviewer (who shall remain nameless!) commented that she had one of the worst voices ever!

...and finally yes, I was aware of the Jamie issue...another Jamie 45 picking up spins is Roosevelt Jones "I say! that's alright", which also came out on Som Records first....outta Texas possibly. :-)

That Roosevelt Jones is probably from Texas as

Graham, this doesn't constitute a guarantee about the flipside of I Think of How I Love Her, but I remembered the other day that I actually have two one-sided RCA Carl Carlton acetates that I got from the same person at the same time. One is I Think of How I Love Her, and the reference number on it is RK4M-6956. The other acetate is I Love True Love, and the reference number on it is RK4M-6955. Given that these two disks were assigned adjoining numbers by RCA, it seems very likely that they were A and B sides of the same 45. Both of these do say "Lando Acetate" on them, and the recording of I Love True Love is the same one that also appears on Golden World.
