Keith, Vickie

The last I heard of Barbara she was living in
Los Angeles with her husband Eddie Singleton
- this was at the time she was recording for
Motorcity.

If there's such a thing as an on-line phone
directory for Los Angeles it might be worth
doing a search for either name.

Barbara was a great singer - it's a real shame
she recorded so little at Motown.

Thanks David,
I'm looking for her now in the phone directory and using my other detective skills.
If she is in LA that is good..

Barbara Randolph recorded two singles at Motown which were released on the Soul label, "I Got A Feeling" B/W "You Got Me Hurtin' All Over" which came out in 1967 and "Can I Get A Witness" B/W "You Got Me Hurtin All Over" which came out in 1968.

At one time she was considered a replacement for Diana Ross in the Supremes when Ross began the transition of group member to solo act, but I believe she and Ross didn't hit it off well and Ross killed that move.

amusing story time...

Barbara told everyone that she only recorded the three tracks mentioned by Greg (they were all issued on a maxi 45 in the UK)...then someone apparently played her, When It Rains It Pours and I'll Turn to Stone - about 8 or 9 tracks....Barbara did not recall recording any of those.

Barbara is more famous as subbing for an ill Tammi in live concerts with Marvin Gaye

John, thanks for that it really is interesting to find out these things, had no idea about her subbing for Tammi, does anyone know if Barbara was ever linked with the Platters ?, rumour has it she was.

Vickie, wish you luck in finding Barbara and what she may have to tell you about Tammi.

Yes, Barbara Randolph was briefly a member of the Platters- in 1964, following the exit of Zola Taylor. Barbara is featured on their Mercury Album "The New Soul of the Platters". In 1965, she was replaced by Betty Jackson, who gave way to Sandra Dawn in 1966.
This is fact, not rumo(u)r. As you can tell by the spelling of rumor, I am American.

Barbara had a solo single on Mercury around the time she joined the Platters.

Mercury 72349

"Rock Lomond" / " Sweet Daddy Tree Top Tall"

I've never heard this but it looks very strange
if the titles are any indication of the style of music - "Sweet Daddy .." if it's the song I'm
thinking of was a fifties rockabilly song
done originally, I think, by pianist Merrill
Moore.

When Barbara left Motown she became a DJ for
AFN (American Forces Network) for a few years - this would be around '69- 70

At the time she signed up with Lee Hazelwood's
LHI label where she had two singles

LHI 22
"Woman to That Man" / " Cheap Lovin"
LHI 30
"Ten or Eleven Towns Ago" / "Miracle on 19th St. "

I've haven't heard these either.

Barbara's mother is Lillian Randolph who was
indeed one of the best known black film actresses
of the forties. She also made a few records
in the fifties. If anyone's interested I
could find out more ...

Russ,

Yes, Shrine was run by Eddie and Raynoma Gordy.

The best way to get some of the Shrine recordings
is a CD on the UK based Kent label "The Shrine
Story" which was put out with Eddie's cooperation.

A second CD was supposed to be released about two years ago but seems to have been shelved.

You should be able to get the CD from any of the
bigger online dealers like Amazon or CDnow.

Kent is one of the labels of Ace Records in the
UK - probably the best overall label for oldies.
they have a web site at www.acerecords.com

I highly recommend the Shrine CD - and it's a
damn sight cheaper than trying to get any of the Shrine stuff on vinyl. There's also a very
detailed booklet giving the history of the label

Ace Records' site is actually a .co.uk
(I always absentmindedly type .com and end up on the wrong site!)

PS - JL wants to to contact you, if he hasn't already.
