I was just cruising the web and found out that my great uncle Levi has/had prostate cancer? I don't talk to my side of the family in Detroit, but wanted to know the status on his condition if anyone knows. Thanks.

This might be the ideal time to ask him yourself Especially if he is part of your family.

John, being that I don't speak to that side of the family, it would be kind of hard to do that. Thank you Carl, I will try to get in contact with my dad over there and see if he'll let us know something. I haven't talked to my dad in about 3 years and haven't talked to my uncle since I saw him in Vegas about 8 years ago so my dad might be hard to track down. I'll letcha know!! :)

Please track him down, if he is who I think he is! I do not know who you are and within 5 minutes of reading your posts on this forum, I understand your dilemma. If I am right, you are looking for Darcel. I know this may sound rood and it is not my position to give advice, but even by mentioning these things on the forum, you clearly have soul within you. Use that soul and make up. Please let us know the outcome. Perhaps Darcel could join us on the forum too and tell us what he is up to in the business. Promise?

Yes, if I get ahold of him (if anything, my mom can talk to one of her relatives out there...) I will have my dad give him the message and then they can come onto the Forum. I'm sure Levi would be happy to hear that he has people who're concerned about him here! :)

Saw a photo of Levi Stubbs about three weeks ago in the Michigan Chronicle at a dedication for a housing project in Detroit. He looked weak and very brittle.

The Four Tops have been performing with the line-up of Obie Benson, Abdul Fakir, Theo Peoples, and Ronnie McNeir. I can't imagine seeing them in concert without Levi Stubbs on lead. I hope Levi eventually can come back, but in my gut I just don't feel it. I hope I'm wrong...

The fact that none of those PBS shows I've seen used anybody remotely as good as the original musicians has really offended me. The singers ARE great but they were only part of what made the records so important to everybody.

If anybody reading this is in contact with Levi, please let him know that we are all praying for him.

Hello,
My name is Deborah Stubbs-Boatner and I am the
oldest daughter of Levi Stubbs. Thank you all for
your concern about my Dad. He is doing much better and hopefully will be back out on the road
again soon. As for the young lady that wrote in
about my father being her great uncle, are you
one of Pat and Darcel's children?

Deborah, thank you so much for the info and I am sure that all of us on this forum are relieved to know this. Please kep us updated and tell dad hello for me for as a teenager in Philly, they actually hired me to be their guitarist after the one they had was let go. I auditioned backstage at th Uptown in Philly.
About a week later, Duke rang me up and told me that because of the then prevelant racial tension(this was in"65 and I am sorta melanin challenged) they had to re-examine their decision and unhire me, much to their dismay.
I do have a photo of us from that fateful day of them and myself (devoid of facial hair)

Hi Deborah

Thanks for taking time to come onto the forum.

The Four Tops live performance at The Roostertail remains one of my favourite albums of all time.

Your father's rendition of 'Ask The Lonely', that evening, is truly out of this world.

He is unquestionably one of the finest singers in the history of popular music.

Top of pageBottom of page   By Eli (205.188.197.158 - 205.188.197.158) on Thursday, June 13, 2002 - 01:23 pm:

I truly concur with David and I am sure all the rest of us on this forum that your dad is an original ad his voice is a gift from God.
NO ONE even comes close.
By the way, uncle Joe was quite a great one as well.
Are there any other family members , children etc., who posess that kind of vocal strength and character?

Once in Philly, in the 80's there was a singer naed Art (something) who was a Levi fanatic and tried to emulate him. One of the ilustrious local labels who will be nameless at this time wanted me tyo do a continuously "discoish" medley of a lot of the Tops' songs with Art as the singer.

The track was so "techno" and not in my usually credible style that I could not listen to it. If you could imagine Bananarama meets the Communards with a little of Dead or Alive thrown in for good measure with a quasi Levi esque vocal on top!!!
Aaarrrghhhh!!! Give me the genuine article any day. All I could do to appease myself was to imagine myself ensconced in Motown studio A working with the Genuine Article.

Hi Deborah,

Thanks for joining the forum.

Your dad has a special place in my affections
as "Reach Out .." was the very first record I
ever bought - I couldn't hear it enough on the radio so had to shell out my entire week's
allowance to get the record. All these years
later it's still great.

Please let your dad know that we're all thinking of him and hope for his better health

Deborah - we are all so pleased you have posted this information today. I recently saw The Tops & Tempts at the Albert Hall in London. Duke kept us posted and spoke to the audience that evening and there was amazing applause for Mr Stubbs who was unable to tour at that time. If he wants to get in the Motown mood, whay not ask him to join us on the forum. It would be an honour to speak with him and thank him personally.

I do hope that wonderful young lady who had the courage to post something on the forum earlier sees your reply and responds.

I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN A HUGE FAN OF LEVI STUBBS, AND WOULD LIKE TO SHARE A STORY WITH YOU.
I WENT TO HIGH SCHOOL IN WARREN, MICHIGAN ( ALL WHITE AT THE TIME)BACK IN THE EARY 70'S AND WAS ON THE NEWSPAPER STAFF. I DID A REVIEW OF KEEPER OF THE CASTLE-ONE OF MY FAVORITE ALBUMS OF ALL TIME.
TWO YEARS LATER I ATTENDED A CONCERT AT PINE KNOB FEATURING THE FOUR TOPS, THE FOUR SEASONS AND TOMMY JAMES AND THE SHONDELLS. LONG STORY SHORT, LEVI AND FRANKIE VALLI WERE- MUCH TO MY AMAZEMENT WALKING AROUND THE COMPLEX. MY FRIEND AND I COULD NOT PASS UP AN OPPORTUNITY TO MEET LEVI. ANYWAY, WE INTRODUCE OURSELVES AND STARTING TALKING TO HIM-LETTING HIM KNOW THAT IT WAS TRUELY AN HONOR TO MEET MY IDOL IN PERSON. AFTER ABOUT 3 OR 4 MINUTES, LEVI TURNED TO FRANKIE VALLI-WHO SEEMED A LITTLE DISAPPOINTED THAT WE DID NOT TALK TO HIM, AND SAID BOYS THIS IS FRANKIE VALLI- OF COURSE WE SAID HI AND WENT RIGHT BACK TO TALKING TO OUR MAN. I TOLD HIM ABOUT THE ARTICLE I HAD WRITTEN IN HIGH SCHOOL. AND HE SAID THAT WAS PRETTY BOLD OF ME SINCE IT WAS AN ALL WHITE SCHOOL AND THAT I CHOSE THEM VERSA ALL OF THE OTHER HARD ROCK ACTS THAT WERE OUT THERE AT THE TIME.
LEVI THAN SAID THAT HE HAD TO DO SOMETHING BUT THAT HE WOULD BE BACK SHORTLY. I NEVER THOUGHT THAT I WOULD SEE HIM AGAIN BUT SHURE ENOUGH, HE CAME BACK TO LOOK FOR US AND WE CONTINUE TO TALK WITH HIM FOR SEVERAL MORE MINUTES.
WHAT A GREAT GUY-ONE OF THE TRUE HIGHLIGHTS OF MY LIFE.

Thanks for your kind response. I thought that you might enjoy hearing about my experience with your Dad. The FourTops are the reason that I started listening to the great black groups that Motown had. I am quite certain that there are alot of white people- who for the first time were turned on to Motown due to the Four Tops.
I remeber reading a rock book by Lillian Roxon that said this much better than I could possibly try to say.
I look forward to the 50th year together tour. I am sure every one associated with rock and roll will want to participate and be invoved in this event

Hi Deborah
Well today is the day my daughter gets married and one of the songs that I have asked to be played is "When She Was My Girl".
I remember hearing it for the first time. I was driving wth my family from Boston back home to Detroit for vacation.
I was not feeling very well-must have been something I ate on the trip. All of sudden at about 1:00 in the morning I heard this song on the radio that sounded just like Levi Stubbs.
I kept changing the dial and finally heard it again, and the D.J. said it was a great new song by the Four Tops. Wow- instant classic.
My illness went right away and I was on cloud nine knowing that my favorite group had a sure fire hit on their hands.
My daughter was only one a t the time but I bought the alblum "Tonight" and played it all of the time and she loved hearing "When She Was My Girl".
So when they play it tonight and when I dance with my daughter, I will be thinking of that day long ago and how the power of a song can make things all better.

TD,
Congratulations on your daughter's wedding. There is nothing quite like it. I speak from experience. I hope your daughter does as well as mine has. My son in law is the greatest.

Thanks for your comments. The night was alot of fun. When they played "When She Was My Girl" my other daughter joined me and her sister on the danced floor and we all sang the entire song.

Hopefully, Levi heard us and is 'getting all better"

Hello,
I have been reading these responses for quite a
long time now about Mr. Stubbs condition. It is
very comforting to know that he is coming along.
I just want to say to his daughter Deborah, Thank
You" for sharing this information with us about
your dad. I consider it privileged information and
I am sure the other people on the forum do as well. You are a very gracious and intelligent
person Deborah, and hopefully you will continue to
keep us informed.
I am new on the website, but I would like to know
why Levi Stubbs and the Tops were never nominated
for a grammy? It seems like a life time achievement award would be pretty well deserved...
don't you all think?

We had a great time at the reception and having Levi there in spirit was great.
When I was in high school back in the early 70's, my buddy and I created a group called "The Five Bottoms"- in tribute to the Four Tops. I think we beat the parody groups like "Spinal Tap" and the "Ruttles". One of the album was called "Sweeper of The Castle"
My buddy was an artist and would make up all of these albums on card board- I stll have them. One of these days I will have to put it on the site
