Hi there;

..just found your forum- great stuff! I was hoping someone could help me out with a query. When the second volume of "This Is Northern Soul" was advertised (in Togetherness magazine) it listed a track by Kim Weston- "Gonna Make It Up To You Baby"; but when the CD eventually came ot every track advertised but Kim's was on it. (it was replaced by a Tammi Terrell track- "Two Can Have A Party" which wasn't that great)

One of the reasons I'm desperate to hear this cut is that it is the only song I have yet to hear from Richard Searling's all-time top 40 Motown chart. (which was in Blues & Soul in 99- If any of you don't know it I can post it here for you)

I see that it hasn't made it to forthcoming the Cellarful Of Motown (compiled by Searling) either. So I guess there is some kind of contractual problem with clearing this track's release, yeah??

If anyone could at least tell me what this track sounds like, or who produced it, I would be happy! (I guess it is not an uptempo dancer, as it has not been popular on the Northern scene, as far as I know....which is fine by me, as I am more into mid-tempo and ballads anyway)

Hope someone can help!

Yan

Thanks for the welcome Ralph. I have just been paging down and checking out old postings....all those studio stories! Incredible!! This is a GREAT site.

While I am here and asking about unreleased Motown; does anyone know anything about the 2 albums worth of material that Ronnie Mcneir (one of my favorite artists) is supposed to have recorded for Motown in the late 70s? (maybe in the same sessions as his "Loves Coming Down" LP material, I guess) Any chance of any of this getting released at any point??

1. The title is "I'm Gonna Make It Up To You." With some luck and perseverance this track may see the light of day in further volumes of any of the series you mention.

2. It is co-produced by Mickey Stevenson and Hank Cosby. That is all the info available at present.

3. Yes, please post the 1999 Searling list.

4. 'Cellarful of Motown' was compiled by Paul Nixon and partially by yours truly and John Lester.

Hi Harry-

...my mistake and apologies; I thought Searling was involved. Thank you (and Paul and John) on behalf of every Motown fan for putting this thing out! (when is the release date?)

O.K, Here is the Searling Motown chart-

34. SAMMY WARD- And Then You Changed
35. DALTON BOYS- I've Been Cheated
36. JNR WALKER/ALL STARS- These Eyes

38. KIM WESTON- I'm Gonna Make It Up To You
39. BOBBY TAYLOR/VANCOUVERS- Does Your Mama Know About Me
40. KIKI DEE- I'll Try Something New

.....one of the reasons I like Searling's best-of type charts is that he seems to arrange them so each track progresses from one into the other- I'm kinda interested to hear how Gonna Make It Up To You "links" Bobby/Vancouvers to Marvelettes.

As far as my tastes go some of the tracks here aren't for me (Jimmy Ruffin & Four Tops for a start); but there are some great unappreciated cuts too (Sammy Ward, Courtship, Monitors, Barbara Randolph....)

Thanks for your help regarding Kim Weston-

Welcome to the forum. The Richard Searling thing, is it a cd or a list of his favorite Motown recordings?

Top of pageBottom of page   By Yan (62.30.112.3 - 62.30.112.3) on Wednesday, June 05, 2002 - 04:38 am:

Tyrone- Just a list, published in a 1999 issue of Blues And Soul magazine....it would be great as a double CD. (40 as the first track of CD 1, 1 as last track of CD 2...anyone at Spectrum listening??)

As far as I know every track except Kim Weston, Chuck Jackson, Kiki Dee, JJ Barnes, Barbara Randolph and Barbara McNair are available on CD, and "Show Me The Way" and "Baby A Go Go" should be out soon on the Cellar CD. Well, I'm pretty sure I remember the Courtship cut (which is ultra-sophisto early 70s philly sweet (sweet, sweet) soul- arranged by Thom Bell) being on a sequel sweet/group/harmony comp- but I could be wrong. I'm sure someone will let me know if I am. (or if any others of the above were are on CD) If you do need any info on how to get any of the cuts, just ask.

Does no one out there know about the Ronnie McNeir stuff?? Ah, well; I am happy enough with the info on Kim Weston- thanks again Harry; hope you are succsessful in getting this to CD.

Actually as regards the Courtship, I would be grateful with ANY information any philly stalwarts/experts could give me on the group. All I do know about them comes from the original Searling review of this track from B&S (early 90s)- that they came out of Jerry Ross' philly workshop; and landed at Tamla via Ross' deal with Motown that also brought over the Colussus stuff. (Virgil Henry etc.) Does anyone know if they had any tracks on Colussus prior to the Tamla singles?

I have always guessed that Gene Allan and Gary Knight (hope I got the first names the right way around!) who wrote all the Courtship cuts, were either the whole group or at least members. The only other material I know they were involved with is some Sandra Feva late 70s gear. They also produced "It's The Same Old Love" which came out on Tamla in 72 (backed with "First Row, Last Balcony"); I have one other 45 by the group- "Love Aint Love" (backed with "Oops It Just Slipped Out"- keep your mind clean!)- this one is credited to Jerry Ross on production. I think it was origianlly on Tamla, and was pulled- as it then came out on Glades. It must have had some impact on R&B charts as it gained a U.K release on a strange UK label called UKAmerican. Both tracks are great if you are into the (very) sweet soul thing (kind of an acquired taste maybe)- "Love Aint Love" has a beautiful production/atmosphere and is a good song, "It's The Same Old Love" is more intense and sophisticated; and builds to a phenomonal instrumental/sax break- if you are locked into the song you WILL be blown away at that point!.

I think there was one other Courtship track. (which I don't have)

Writing this all while eating my breakfast; got to go work the early shift now- curses. Well, sorry for boring you all- any info regarding the group would be appreciated.

Oh, I have a label listing for Motown, and it lists a 1972 single for the "Jerry Ross Symposium" (??!) called "It's The Same Old Love"- does anyone have this?? It has to be the same song; is it an identical production?- I kind of guessed from the group's name that if it isn't, it is maybe less soulful and more pop.

I really have to go or I'll miss my train!

Who wrote and produced 'thrill a moment'for Kim??.
I absolutely love that song. It doesn't sound like a typical motown/HDH number, the beat is a bit more laid back.some good chord changes in there. I think Kim has a very unique vocal style.
I saw Kim (solo)on one of the reruns of ready steady go (60S uk pop programme). does any one remember what song she performed on that show??

On the audition 45 it says written by Stevenson/Weston/Hunter.

Produced by Stevenson/Hunter.

In the cd booklets Barney Ales name is added to the writing credits.

Yes, a fantastic record Soulboy.

Thanks for the info,i'm really into some of her records right now. What i don't understand is why she wasn't more successful. I suppose she wasn't 'crossover' material in the opinion of Mr Gordy and company.
