Hey All,
Vickie here...Anyone know how I can get Tammi Terrell's discography from her Chess era..
It was a brief area of her recording career,
and we don't have any info from it..Also Try Me label..Any ideas or feedback..let me know or send an e-mail..I think I have the Scepter Wand discography covered..but if you have any feedback from that area of her life..I am open to that too.
Thanks so much..

Hi Vickie,
Eli here. Call Val Shively at Rand B records in Upper Darby Pa., and tell him that you are a good friend of mine and about the book and I am more than sure that he will oblige. I do not know the number offhand but it is listed.I went to look for Tammi's grave on Friday but I could not locate it so I will go back on the weekend.

Cheers!!

Eli

I presume these are the titles you're referring to:

Try Me 28001 / 1963
I CRIED
IF YOU DON'T THINK

TRY ME was James Brown's label, though he did not produce the record. (Someone remind me who did, please!) The writer credit for I CRIED is Brown/Byrd - (James) Brown / (Bobby) Byrd?

Checker 1072 / 1964
IF I WOULD MARRY YOU
THIS TIME TOMORROW

The producer of the latter was Bert Berns, who sadly passed long before his time. He's more usually associated with New York labels, and particularly Atlantic, so perhaps this was an outside production he leased to Chess. (Checker was a Chess subsidiary label.) By the way, the writer credit for "Marry" was Russell/Montgomery - a song co-written by Tammi?

I'm sure more learned souls may have more information for you :o)

Yes - Checker was another label owned by the Chess Brothers. (Like Tamla and Motown were owned by BG)

... and the wonderful "If I would marry you" was featured on the Chess labels double LP compilation in '92, called, "Sweeter than the day before". A superb compilation, though I say it myself! ;-)
The copies of her Try Me 45 seem to credit her as "Tana"...are they all like this both stock & promotional copies?

Vickie,
Check out book called Chicago Soul by Robert Pruter. I'm sure it'll tell you all you need to know about the history of Chess, and it's Checker label.

Hey Ritchie Or John L.
Are the Chess Bros. still living?
Vickie

Top of pageBottom of page   By Ritchie (62.254.0.6 - 62.254.0.6) on Wednesday, May 29, 2002 - 09:49 pm:

I know Leonard Chess - who was the heart and soul of the label passed on in 1969, after which, the label's decline began.

If the Checker recording was an independent production (Bert Berns) it might be useful to try and find out where it was recorded. It wasn't necessarily a Chess recording - just licensed in. I'm sure Bert Berns worked mainly in New York. Sadly, he's no longer around, but somebody must know something about the sessions.

I don't know about Phil Chess. I think he may be still around as he was petitioning in 1997 in the "Save Maxwell Street" campaign in Chicago.

There is a book available on Chess Records.

I don't have it at home right now.

Will post the detail next week.
