I just saw on the missjones.net website that 5/23 is the birthday for Tiki Fulwood, the drummer for Funkadelic and a great topic on this forum!
Congrats and I hope that you come on the forum and share some great stories!!

Daren, Tiki was a very good friend of mine. Unfortunately he passed away almost twenty years ago from cancer.
In Plainfield N.J., where he lived at the time, there have been a lot of mysterious cancer related deaths including Tiki and guitarist, Glen Goins. That area became known as a cancer cluster because of a high incidence of radioactivity, I believe, due to a reactor which is now defunct. (no pun intended)

To the members of this forum, I APOLOGIZE!!! i assumed that he was still with us and did not realize that he was gone! Again I am sorry that I did not know that. To his friends and people that worked with him, it was a mistake on my part and I again apologize.
Thank you

Tiki passed October 1979. But your remembering his B-Day certainly does my heart good, thanks Daren. Mandrill drummer Neftali Santiago wrote me that he was there when Tiki passed from a rare form of (stomach?)cancer, so I was thinking Tiki was in Cali at the time. What a great drummer. Wars of Armageddon from the Maggot Brain LP was one of his highlights. Wonder where that album was done. The first two Funkadelic albums were done at Ralph's Place. Good to see Glen Goins name up in here as well. Easily the best vocalist to ever to sing with Parliament-Funkadelic (second best just might be Clyde Wilson for Come in Out of the Rain). Glen played guitar on Johnnie Taylor's Eargasm LP & Jeannie Reynolds Cherries & Bananas album, both of which were produced by Don Davis and recorded at United Sound. Anybody care to share any rememberances of Tiki gigs or sessions he played on to share in his memory.

I'm not sure about Maggott Brain, but the following lp in 1972, "America Eats Its Young" was partly recorded at Toronto Sound I think... they were living here at the time (Toronto).

In the late fall of 1967, Tiki and I were hired by a vocal group from upstate New York(I forgot their name)through a local Philly agent. The bassist was Ralph Downs who we called "Motown" because he played so busy that he tried to do Jamerson and Babbitt and whomever else all at thew same time!!
Any way,the gig in Newburgh was so horrendous because of the group that the clubowner fired us without any pay after three days of an eventual week long gig with a week option.
Tiki and I shared a room on the third floor of the hotel beside the parking lot and because of that everyone gathered there to toss their suitcases out of the window to a waiting (small) car. Somehow I scrounged some money from somewhere for a bus ticket to NYC.
I haven't got a clue as how I made it back to Philly with my suitcases, my axe and my Fender Super Reverb with two blown speakers.
That was probably the abyss of my career cause right after that things started to improve. Thank God!!!

Bobby,
I have a similar tale of woe.
The Sunliners were new on the road.We were playing the Grange Tavern in Hamilton Ontario. The Grange was the home base of Ronnie Hawkins and the Hawks, who would evolve into The Band. Naturally we had to be sharp. There was a stipulation in the contract however. The club wanted a female singer for some reason which I can't remember. All our manager could come up with was ths black chick named Nelli Hill, who was a good singer, but from an earlier era. We'd just start getting the joint rocking and then we'd have to bring Nellie up and she'd do songs lke Sweet Bird Of Youth etc and we'd lose the momentum.
Well we made it to one week out of a three week gig before the ax fell. As we were packing up wondering what the hell we were going to do, our agent called and told us to head for New York.We were booked to play the Peppermint Lounge

Neat stories guys, Ralph, I'd never heard of the Grange Tavern & thought Ronnie Hawkins' main hang out was a bar on Yonge St in Toronto, I'll have to double check... any other tales of playing southern Ontario or Canada at all? /Erik, a curious Canadian...

Erik,
The Grange was run by this guy of Asian descent. I think his name was Mike. He was a real nice guy. When you entred the club there was this extremely large statue of Buddah, about 15 feet tall. Also in the lobby was a very large poster of Ronnie and the Hawks.
Bobby.... ( my long lost brother?? )I'll take the Dago red.Never got into tripe though.
