Some of these threads surprise me for their longevity. This one has turned out rather interesting thanks to none other than Mr. George Katsakis. Continue....

The only teen dance clubs I attended were the Chatterbox on Middlebelt, just north of Warren and The Pumpkin on Wayne, so. of Ford. The very first act I saw was "Billy Lee and the Rivieras" at the Chatterbox ... and the very first tune they did was "Shake a Tailfeather" Does anyone recall the evolution of this group?
Mike Crew discovered them, produced them, and changed their name to Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels.

Dear Kenny George:
It was Bob Crew who discovered Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels, not Mike Crew...he was Bob's cousin! LOL

It was actually Dave Prince of WXYZ that discovered Billy Lee and the Rivieras and sent a tape of them to Bob Crewe. Of course, they were already a huge draw at Walled Lake Casino.

Thanks, I stand corrected ... at least I had the "Crew" right - oft times it's both names!
For some reason, I didn't consider the Walled Lake Casino a teen club ... I guess because it had a resort kind of feel. And I do recall seeing Dave Prince and Lee Allen out there, and I do believe you're right, Dave, re: the "discovery".
Now here's another one for you (all) ... do you recall a group called Doug Brown and the Omens?
Or is that better served in a new forum heading?

They advertised the Walled Lake Casino heavily on all the "teen" radio stations -- WKNR, WXYZ ... so it had to be an all ages venue.
Of course, I was STILL too young, sitting in my bedroom with my used radio on, singing along with the Detroit Dragway jingle.
I'll never forget those "Billy Leeeee and the Rivieras!" Walled Lake ads. And hearing all the time about the Gayhaven. When I was debriefing Dave Prince recently he told me all the Gayhaven mentions weren't even paid ads, the jocks would just tell everybody to go there, and they did!

If my memory serves me right, didn't Doug Brown and the Omens become the Brownsville Station? I could be way off track here. Who was Charlie Musslewhite? Didn't he have something to do with these guys?

First of all, there is no name calling on this forum...and, furthermore, this forum is for people who have similar interests, and that would not include negativity about other people or what your opinion is of someone you probably don't even know. Please show respect on this forum.

Thanks for taking that up first of all.
I have removed the offending words as they drag SD into the gutter.
The person you are dissing also frequents this forum.
I would rather have his company than yours.

I apologize ... certainly didn't mean any offense. I guess my humor doesn't translate very well without knowing me. Again, I am truly sorry if anyone was offended -

To answer the Doug Brown question: The Talismen became Brownsville Station. The organ player with Doug Brown and the Omens was Bob Seger, who left in '66 to begin his own career. Doug Brown did a lot of other work, notably heading up Southwind a couple of years later.

That's exactly right Joe, Segar played double neck guitar and organ/piano in the trio. I recall Doug thinking he'd hit the pinnacle when they played the Upper Deck @ The Roostertail.

On the subject of Doug Brown he produced a great
version of Bob Seger's "East Side Story" for
a Riverside, California band called the Caretakers
- it's well worth a listen. You can find it on CD
in one of the Southern California volumes of
the "Pebbles" series of comps.

That was Sept. of 1966 that Doug Brown played the Roostertail with Bob Seger. They played all that fall. Jerry Schoenith (the owner of the Roostertail) and I first heard Doug Brown and the Omens playing in a suburb of Chicago when he offered them the job. I was there to help him find a band for the upper deck. One of the greatest trips I ever took because everything was first class.

I first caught them at a tiny club on E. Warren (or was it Mack)and Outer Dr. - called the Red Carpet. It soon became a favorite haunt for a group of us ... and not just because of Doug/Bob, but the other quality acts that worked there.
DeAnne, did you ever ride in a boat with Jerry? I guess that's somewhat rhetorical in that you're still alive.
