hey all, bobby lewis here.
where did you get that picture? it looks like the one in "heat wave". that photo is from 1963 i think. starting from upper left, lonnie londin.
he was the bass guitarist and front man for the group. upper right, larrie londin. drummer and great singer.larrie went to the top in post headliners times, becoming one of the A-teamstudio drummers in nashville. lower right, ray clayton. alto sax, flute, clarinet, and piano. a very versatile musician. lower left, its me, bobby lewis.about 40 years younger. i played,
electric guitar, 12 string guitar, and 5-string banjo, and sang. thank you for posting the photo.
i would post a current one, but do not know how.
i'm in the infancy stages on computers. if anyone in the detroit area knows how, i would be glad to supply the photo. i feel honored, i've got my second site. thank you for all your interest.
sincerely, bobby lewis

Hi Bobby

Spot on! It is the pic from Heat Wave. Thanks for the "who's who" :o)

I just remembered that Lowell felt there could be problems in posting images or text that come direct from books. Text being 'long strings of text'.

To protect this site and it's owners he placed some instructions which sit in the 'conditions' box on the left of your screen.

This is not a criticism, I have done the same in the past.

Yes, indeed - my apologies. I wasn't thinking. To avoid any problems, perhaps Lowell can delete the pic, and hopefully Bobby has a copy of his own?

I will ask Lowell first.

Perhaps now that we've credited the source it's ok.

Will come back on this.

Can you please explain why the picture needs to be deleted?

That Headliners picture was produced specifically for a purpose and the references (eg to the VIP logo) clearly shows that to be promotional. Accordingly, the picture was available to any person that wanted it and that person was actively ENCOURAGED to reproduce it.

I would just mention that no royalites were paid to use that picture in Heat Wave. And to take that even further, no royalties were paid on ANY of the pictures used in Heat Wave. A fact that could be confirmed by many Soulful Detroit devotees.

Reproduction of label logos, company internal memorandum, album label mock-ups and material not intended for promotional purposes is a different ball game.

Bobby Lewis - Do you have a problem with the picture being shown here on Soulful Detroit?

John

We have not decided to delete it yet.

If there are extenuating circumstances on this pic then so be it.

Lowell and I however, need to very careful.

I would appreciate further dialogue on this subject from some of our friends in the music industry where copyright is paramount.

I am totally in agreement that you should in no way encourage any form of unauthorised reproduction........even by association. However, my experience has shown me that it would be OK to reproduce that promotional picture of the Headliners.

In the event that Bobby Lewis, in particular, had objections to its reproduction, then I would totally honour his wishes and take it down. That, to me, is not about copyright, it's about being a decent person.

c'mon guys, its only a picture. in fact before motown ever put that picture in its book, we"the headliners" owned that picture. it was taken by maurice seymour in chicago and paid for by us. we never gave up the right to have them print it exclusively. therefore as the owner of said photo, please feel free to print it. and thank you for printing it. there, i feel better already. bobby lewis

Hi Bobby

Yes it's only a picture, but try telling that to authors who own pictures or have paid for pictures and quite correctly stipulate that nothing from their book should be reproduced without permission.

I had to ask the question and will do so again if necessary.

Sorry if I've offended anyone.

in response to the question as to whether jimmy hunter was the drummer in my band stix and stones, no. that was later when the band was called the crackerjack band. my drummer in stix and stones was marcus terry. a great drummer and first class entertainer. marcus played with the royaltones in the 60's along with george katsakis, bob babbett, dennis coffey, etc. questions seem to be winding down so i probably will only be checking this strand every two weeks. it has been great fun. and the originators of the site are to be commended for the great job they did putting it together. see ya, bobby lewis

I still don,t know my ass from a hole in the ground as far as the computer goes, but I can turn it on and bring up soulfuldetroit.com.Oh well, like music, you have to put time in wood-shedding those scales before you can be half-way decent.

Hey Bobby, Shannon here (Larrie's son), haven't seen you in years but Lonnie clued me into the Forum. I'll pass the info on to Sean he'll love this. It's great to see this information coming out about the great work you guys did and continue to do. I know I grew up listening to the Headliner/Tornados tapes and even now have copies at work. I especially want to thank you on behalf of my family for the kind words you've had about my father and the work he did with you and others. My hope is that somehow/somewhere he realizes how many lives he touched, I know I miss him every day. My knowledge of the band is limited but as you probably remember the "Headlining Wives" were also on many of those tours you guys did and perhaps I can get Mom to answer a few questions or clear up details on ocassion. Well, I'll shut up now. Thanks again to everyone for their interest, I know my father would have been flattered.

Probably not your greatest memory but how 'bout the "American Beatles" promotion at the Suburban Lounge, circa October '64? Headliners with hair combed down?

hi all, bobby lewis. lynn bruce! how are you? you never know who will show up on this thing. and shannon, what a great surprise. for those who don't know, shannon is larrie londin's son. one of two. i hope sean finds this site as well. shannon, i remember that you were a talented artist. and i'll bet you have taken leaps and bounds in that direction. i loved and respected your dad. not only as one of the finest musicians ever, but his sharp edged wit. i have a picture of him above my desk and wish he was still with us. he would have loved this forum. a few years ago i got my old original motown contract from your mother. she had all of them. i showed it to mike joyces wife in nashville. she is a prominent music attorney there. she couldnt believe that anyone would sign such a thing. all for the company and not much for the artist. but, in those days, it was still very cool to be connected with motown records. i would like to see you, sean, and your mom one of these days. ray clayton and martha are visiting us next tues. that should be a trip. i am looking forward to it. thats it for now. be back soon, bobby lewis

Yo, Bobby Lewis...

Buckster The Funkster here, a.k.a. "Buck," a.k.a Lenny, a.k.a. "Dean" of Your Mustache Jan 'n' Dean fame. Yup, "What's Your Name" is still the only tune we know. Been singing it at parties, weddings, graduations and bars for about 40 years now.

Hey, I never knew that Marcus and Dennis Coffee were with the Royaltones. Would that be the Royaltones of "Flamingo Express" fame? Was the nucleus of that group out of Fordson High School? Or am I thinking of the Royal Playboys?

I never knew of the Headliners. But, man, if you have that old Motown contract what a cool thing that would be to frame and display.

Where are Marcus and Sal these days? "Jan" (Jivin' Joe) says hello...huhhha!

--The Buckster, er Dean, er Lenny...

for the record --

I agree that promotional pictures were produced with the intention of anybody and EVERYBODY using them, to promote a record. Those were sent out to every newspaper, radio station etc. who would take them. It's a common practice to reproduce those pictures in a book -- I know, some Motown promo pictures were in my book.

But the book publisher in no way owns that stuff. If it's an original photo that the book publisher bought or licensed, that's different.

I had a recent case where an author told me we could only use three photos from her Random House book. Mind you, the photos were all film studio promo shots. I assured her that if the newspaper had the pictures in our files (all old movie stills), and we did, we could go ahead and use as many as we wanted. p.s. We did.
