Jack Scott's Dance Ranch. Playe there many times myself. It was there that I first heard the record Peppermint Twist with Joey Dee and the Starliters. Little did I know then that in the near future I would be backing him up at the Peppermint Lounge.

Hey Detroit Gal! You're right about Punch and Dave co-owning the Hide Out...thought it was the Palladium! Let me know as soon as you speak with Kris Peterson. There are a lot of people on this site who are very interested in her!!! Don't forget...dinner at the Clawson on June 15th!!

Ralph, Jack Scott is still very active in and around the Detroit area. His voice sounds great and he has a good young rockabilly band with him.

Fury,
Jack's a good guy. When I was playing at the Cliche wih the Sunliners Jack used to come in. After the gig we'd sometimes go over to his house and he would play us things he was recording and get our opinions. I always liked jack and was a fan of his long before we got to know one another.

Where was The Mump or the Hideaway?

The Mummmp (sp?) was in the Northland parking lot, wasn't it?

And by Hideaway, I think you mean Hideout. There were several Hideout Clubs, one over in St. Clair Shores, one in Clawson ...someone else who had viable I.D. then could add to that, I was kicked out.

Does anybody remember club 182? There was another teen club in Redford, can't remember the name.

I remember Club 182. It is where my brother "Corky " saw " THE LIGHT " and discovered his guitar could attract more females than a Cadillac wih a trunk full of money. The rest is history as they say. Russ....scroll to the first Detroit Teen Club thread. I think somewere there it gives the name of the Redford club.

Club 182 was in Plymouth and was actually U.A.W. Hall # 182. It was Club 182 for dances such as the ones hosted by WXYZ's Joel Sebastion in 1961-62.

Ralph

And where you did you discover that keyboards could attract even more females than Russ could attract with his guitar!!!

DavidC,
Club182 wasn't in Plymouth. It might have been Livonia or someplace very nearby.

John Lester,
All I was ever trying to be was a serious musician. I never could quite figure out why those fine ladies were pestering me. Maybe it had something to do with the keyboards. They lent an illusion of refinement. All smoke and mirrors pal.

Does anybody remember the Chessmate (or maybe it was it the Checkmate)? It was on Livernois at 6 Mile acroos the street from the U of D campus and the old Varsity Theater. Both the club and the theater have long since been demolished, but I was just wondering if anyone remembers the spot.

It was the Chessmate, right by U of D. And how about the original Raven Gallery, in Birmingham, where I remember seeing a young folk singer named Ron Coden in the early 60's.

Funny you should mention Ron Coden. He is a good friend of mine - he currently teaches music at an elementary school in Oak Park and he also keeps quite busy doing various dates - mostly in and around Detroit. He really is a wealth of information about the Detroit entertainment scene. We often talk about the old days and I'm sure he'll be tickled pink to know that he so well remembered by his fans.

Speaking of the Raven (the original), I remember seeing a guy named Jimmy Buffet there, and oddly enough, the place was only half filled.

And while we're at it, do you recall a coffee shop on Woodward (I think) called the Retort ... it was in the basement?

Top of pageBottom of page   By 65 memories (66.72.183.193 - 66.72.183.193) on Monday, July 29, 2002 - 05:32 pm:

I don't know where in Detroit the Retort was exactly, but I do know that Jose Feliciano mentions in a biographical blurb that he sang there in 1963. It was legendary with the folk crowd.

That's really interesting re: Jose ... I remember seeing The Dalton Boys, Josh White and Dave Barbuti there. Quaint room, no bad seats.
