I also heard the sons have more tracks to release. Joe Doc, what a voice, and there harmony, what a blend, I can't wait to here the new songs. I also heard they have some early basement tapes, accapella, and some practices with just guitar, bass, and drums.I'm looking forward to hearing them. Also any news about the Sons would be appreciated.

A lot of memories, those summers in A.C. Watching the Sons on the steel pier.
Does anyone rememeber them on the old Jerry Blavet dance show. What a
trip. My favorite Sons song wasn't one of their singles. It went ...."Girl you took
the best of me, come and get the rest of me" Will it be on their new CD?

Karen, How do you know that song?? It never was released!! Yes it is on the CD.
Bunny Sigler and Phil Hurtt wrote it.

Fran is my uncle. We thought the line was " come and get the recipe" We were kids then but we knew all the songs. My Mom would sneak me into clubs and I loved when the group did "Old Man River" My uncle had a solo. Later as a teen I went on the blavet show when the Sons were on. That was over 25 years ago. You know what, when you see Jerry today he looks exactly the same.

Old man river may also be on the cd thanks to the lost "basement tapes"

The recipe bit reminded me of when I was a teenager trying to find some soul 45s. The amount of lyrics we misheard caused us to miss lots eg. 'There's No Stars In Our Eyes' by the Supremes. The best was 'What's So Easy For Two' - we tried every Motown record with 'two' in the title. We'd bought quite a few before the correct one was stumbled across. Well you couldn't go up and ask the deejays could you!

I'm new to this venue, folks. It was just yesterday that I was going through some old notes and titles leftover from the WPGR Philly Gold Radio days and downloaded a few of them.
'Got To Get You Back' by TSORS was one.

Deliriously early-70's Philly, it then got sent to a few people on ICQ. One gal who heard it said 'they sound WHITE!'. Never occured to me to that point; the song sounds so full of Sigma and the Schuylkill that it was a natural add to that collection even if were four people on the FBI list.

My question is, who are these guys, who wrote that song, where are they from, and did they do anything else like it?

Welcome to the forum Steve.

Unfortunately the man Himself, Bobby Eli, is in hospital otherwise you would probably know by now!

Try using our 'search forum' function by typing "sons of robin stone" (include the inverted commas). They have been discussed before.

--Steve, greetings!
The Sons of Robinstone were/are White Singers.
My Brother, "BassMan" visits this site
frequently. Four of the group are still living.
Joe Doc, Leadsinger on most of their songs, passed
away a couple of years ago.
Right now, the remaining guys, are working on
getting out some of their work which was recorded,
in the 70's, but not released. Bobby Eli was
working with them on it. I was driving home
from the Jersey Shore this afternoon listening
to a tape cassette of their music, made from an old reel to reel, and just can't wait to hear these songs re-mastered on a CD.
If you go to www.steelpier.com, you can see some
old photos of the group.
Marylyn, Sister of one of the "Sons"

Hi Marilyn

Kent is a UK label, the Classic Soul imprint of reissue specialists Ace Records. You can find their website at:
http://www.acerecords.co.uk

At the foot of the homepage there's a drop-down list "search by label". If you find "Kent" that'll take you straight to the relevant catalogue.

PS - So Soulful 70s is # CDKEND 175

---Thanks for the website.
I have the original 45 on ATCO, (Atlantic).
"Got to Get You Back" is actually the B side of
the record. The A side, "Love is Just Around
The Corner" never quite made it.
In the fifties and sixties, our mother actually
worked at the company that pressed Sun and
some other labels. She inspected the records and
brought home the ones that were considered
defective, maybe a torn label etc. They
pressed records of Elvis, Johnny Cash, Fats Domino, Bill Haley and many
others. I use to give the "defective 45's to
my girlfriends. I only wish now that I had saved
some, as they are probably very valuable.

Remember the time you were playing Steel Pier,
and after the show, the group was walking off the
Boardwalk, when a giant wrestler(who also was
appearing there) threw his teenage
daughter, down on the boardwalk, she started choking and you were the only one to confront him?
Wow, I thought he was going to pulverize you,
but he came to his senses and got off of her.

I have no recollection of the incident you mentioned, but I also am glad I wasn't pulverized.I saw Franny today and heard the remixes, they sound fine, I especially enjoyed the basement tapes, I'm glad they edited out the arguments, so many memories.

Hya Flic,

The even-money wagering here says that Jefferson-Hawes-Simmons were the songwriters of 'Got To Get You Back'. Doubtless with Thom Bell as chaperone.

(And perhaps some of the other Mighty Three Music wizards had some input)?

Corrections welcome if the consortium here (Allentown PA) is incorrect, as it usually is in these crucial matters.

Hi Flic, I have a bunch of photo's of you on the steel pier. I'm sending them to Franny.
Do you remember who sang lead on "Love is just a Merry-go-round? It doesn't sound like Joe or Jimmy, Fran says it's from Studio editing. Those Basement tapes are great, I wish they had home movies of them.

Top of pageBottom of page   By flic (64.12.97.11 - 64.12.97.11) on Saturday, July 20, 2002 - 03:47 am:

Hi Karen,

Can't wait to see the photos.
If you mean "Love is (just around the corner)", Joe Doc sang the lead vocal.
The basement tapes ARE quite good. Listening to them thirty years later gives me a different perspective. Those kids could sing. I do believe we paved the way for artists such as NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK. By the way, you're better off without home movies, we did more arguing then singing.

Franny has songs that I know we sang but for the life of me I don't recall the songs or recording them. Also, I believe you have me confused with JIMMY PHILlIPS, He was the one all the girls liked.

Ok here's a Question how did you get your nickname, how about Patcheye? He never wore a patch that I could remember. Also along the songs line, Did either you or Patcheye sing lead on any of the Studio recording?, How about those cover songs? I can tell Doc's voice and most of the times Jimmy, and of course my uncle sings lead on Toe-Tapping and the Devil Crys( its funny, we never knew the names of most these songs so we guess). You forget, I guess, I knew the group throughout my teen years. I could hardly mix you guys up, I use to dance with you down my parents basement during their parties. And I have Pop's little shore house
in NCM. I bet you have some memories of that place.

Top of pageBottom of page   By Flic (68.46.72.231 - 68.46.72.231) on Sunday, July 21, 2002 - 09:49 am:

Karen,
The guys I grew up with gave me the name for the simple fact that I love movies. Believe it or not John was accidently struck by a thrown rock right under his eye and he had to wear a bandage for a few days, hence the name Patcheye. Neither John nor I sang lead vocals in the studio, but we did plenty while performing on stage. John gravitated toward R and B artists such as Issac Hayes and Billy Preston, while I did mostly swing jazz and show tunes, e.g. Mac Arthur's Park, Cabaret and Sinatra tunes, Which by the way I still do at clubs and restaurants. I do have fond memories of Pop Flynn and the NCM house, we used to stay there during our Steel Pier gigs and Pop would make us bologna sandwichs.

Ok, here's another vote for Flic being the one all us "teenage girls" were crazy about. Not to embarass you Flic, but you were hot! (Patcheye wasn't bad either) My name is Peggy Penfold and I grew up next door to MacCulloughs in NCM. Karen and I have remained friends and see each other often. Last week she let me listen to the CD's and they brought back such wonderful memories. I can remember you guys living next door to me when you were playing steel pier. I was so thrilled listening to your music and can't wait to buy the CD's. "Love is just around the corner" and "Gotta get you back" are my favorites.

Question: I remember you guys out water skiing one time and someone fell into jelly fish. I think it was you. You came to my house and my Mom put stuff on your back (can't remember what) and you stood in our dining room in front of this big window fan we had. What is you?

Fran: why don't you come visit sometime? I still live in NCM. Actually, I moved back into my parents home after my dad passed away in 1996. I did alot of work on the house and ended up selling it in 1999. I miss having Karen as a neighbor but see her whenever she's down. I have such great memories of Grandpop Flynn. Remember the cocky pickle (sp?)?. He used to put me on the dog and let me ride around his yard when I was really small. For my birthday he would tape quarters into my card. And let us never forget his nickname for me, "Buttercup". Not having a grandpop that lived close by it was so nice to have Pop Flynn.

I've enjoyed reading all the messages and can't wait to buy the CD's. Good luck to all of you and THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES!

Hi Fran: I always wondered what happened to you. We spent a lot of time together when you were recovering from the car accident. I lived two doors down from Pop Flynn, had 5 other brother and sisters, 2 of them were sisters and I know you always liked my middle sister Lori. You use to come up and hang out and play cards at her house, because at the time she lived up on the next block. Loved your voice and thought all of you guys were just too cool!

p.s. Flic, it was Patcheye that was the hottie, but I seem to remember you weren't too bad yourself. I also remember the jellyfish incident!
