Weldon Arthur MacDougal III reports today that Phil Jones, longtime Motown executive, died today. See the first few comments and an old-school photo of Phil with Michael Jackson and Weldon on Weldon's thread. I encourage anyone with more Phil stories to share them here, thanks.

I worked with Phil at Motown in the early 70's and he was great to work for. I remember typing a memo to ship albums somewhere but made a typo that said "shit albums". He saw it and never let me forget it! He had a tremendous heart and always had a good word to say about everybody! His love affair with his wife Minta went on for all the years they were married and I'm sure they will be together again some day. He spoke at the first Motor City Reunion in Detroit in 1988 and made fun of everybody...what a great sense of humor! We'll all miss him.

Marilyn,

I love that picture. It is great to see Phil's face again.

Working at Motown full time, I had many casual encounters with Phil Jones over the years. I have never met any person who more consistantly radiated warmth and good cheer, day in and day out. It was always a pleasure to exchange a "hello" with this delightful fellow.

He also had a quiet humility about his manner. I wish it had worn off on me. His face was always with a wonderful sincere smile, just like the picture, but he was not one to talk your ear off.

I wish I could have met him again: One last time.

Rest in peace, Phil, and thank you Marilyn.

Mike McLean
