Radio 4 - eh? Respectability at last! I'll be on the case and recording it. Thanks for that - I always listen to the Today programme, but might have missed this one!

11:30 Axles, Engines, Music And Motown
In 1959, Detroit Ford motor worker Berry Gordy adapted the high volume, low cost assembly line motor manufacturing philosophy to his first love, music production.

The resulting Motown company of solely black artists became a giant force in the history of popular music and a weapon in the US racial struggle.

In the first of two programmes, Stephen Evans travels to 'Motor City' Detroit to meet the likes of Gladys Knight and Martha Reeves who were involved with the company's early success.

it is online at http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/
hope that helps

Martha Reeves was interviewed by Jenny Murray on woman's hour last week on Radio 4. The show may have been archived at the radio4 website.

Andy Peebles presents The Soul Show on radio 2 on wednesday nights and its also on line at

www.bbc.co.uk/radio2 at 21:00 British Summer time.

Jools Hollnad has a show at the same time on Monday nights and depending on his guest there is usually a good chunk of R&B/Soul played.

Did we ever hail Edwin's great performance on Jools Holland's Hogmanay show (New Years Eve)?

Kept meaning to mention it.

Agent Double O Soul (as John Rhys would say).

Listen to his SoulfulDetroit show on BluePower.com. Essential music and check out his amazing voice. Atmospheric.

I have seen Edwin Starr twice on stage. Last year at Glasgow's Barrowland and several years ago at the Pavillion Theatre. On both occasions he was magnificent. He has a great voice insists on having a top class band and puts on a stomping show. He knows how to give the people what they want, he sings his hits, his northen favourites and throws in his excellent interpretations of other people's songs. I had actually gone to the Pavillion to catch Junior Walker and left a covert to Edwin. I'm DJ'ing at a retro club in Edinburgh this Friday called the GoGo. The last time I played there Agent Double O Soul filled the floor with up for it twenty somethings. This time I might try out 25 Miles, Headline news or Back Street.
