A virus appears to have accessed my e-mail function.
I'm hoping that some software that someone has sent me eliminates it.
Do we have anyone on the forum who understands this subject enough to explain steps we should take to prevent this problem?

I am no expert, but they tend to secretly send the virus to all in your address book (Outlook Express) at some stage - which includes me!! They sometimes have a 'fwd' in the subject line and say something like 'Fwd - 'take a look at this mate, for a good laugh'. I use:

as a free virus checker. It has found 2 on my machine and cleaned it up. It has regular updates and is simple to use.
To be honest - I feel if anybody receives personal emails from you they should seriously consider deleting it/them, short term. My wife and I, when forwarding mail to each other/friends, where the 'fwd' term automatically comes up in the subject line, always write 'safe from Carl' or something that suggests this it is not a 'virus' being forwarded. If that makes any sense. If you have identified the name of the virus, publish it on the forum and let us know whether the software you received worked or not and what the symptoms on your pc are. If you are successful, let us know that it is safe to open emails from you. Take a look in your 'sent items' and see if any spurious emails have been sent that you know nothing about. If they have been recorded as sent, you may wish to consider a mail shot to them all, advising them they may have contracted a virus and hopefully your solution for the remedy! I hope you do not think I am out of order saying this.

You are correct in saying everyone should be cautious.
This started yesterday when I opened 2 files which had been attached from the sender 'Lowell'.
Unfortunately I should have noticed that Lowell's mail usually comes in as sender 'Lowell Boileau'.
This has really surprised me that they can mess about with sender's names.
The symptoms I have are dozens of items being returned to me by the Mail Administrator due to their being a virus attachment. Trouble is I have not mailed these individuals for weeks if not months!
Unfortunately I have deleted these 'returns' therefore am unsure of the recipients.
My main question right now is ... does this only affect Outlook Express?
I will use the clean up software when I get home tonight.
I don't have to tell you what I think of the creeps who have done this.
Everyone, please be careful.

Thanks for your advice (OFF BOARD).
I bought virus/firewall software lat October when the system went live. It was the latest version from your suggested supplier.
The installation blocked me from using Outlook Express, however. The supplier admitted that their latest version was not a patch on version 4(?) and had problems within it which they were unable to contend with...frightening!
I spent 2 (weekend) days solid on their helpline and in the end had to accept a full refund.
I have been mega careful to date and delete quite a few items without reading them. This caught me cold however.
You are right, I need to invest in this type of software. I just hope that I don't have the same installation problems.

It seems that Outlook Express seems to attract many forms of virus. However, I received a corker on my Internet based email programme that opened about 100 Internet explorer windows in front of my eyes. Our network virus checker sorted it out eventually. I had a short-term idea if one hit our machine at home. It was to save the address book onto a floppy and then delete all the names out of the address book on the pc, which could make it difficult to retrieve information for the virus. Also archiving all your mail onto a floppy too, to 'cleanse' the system. All very drastic and complicated to say the least. For the top ten virus list look at:

You could possibly find your virus and what action is best, rather than my sledge hammer way.

This may be a stupid question, but are you sure it was actually the virus scanner that was causing the problems with Outlook Express? The firewall would automatically "block" the email client if you had not given Outlook access, in the initial installation/configuration process.
I only say this because I am running the latest versions of both programs - with Outlook Express - with no problems whatsoever.

It's a bit vague now what was happening.
Ultimately, both packages were causing grief and that's why they refunded me. I would say however that Firewall was the main perpetrator.
They couldn't correct the problem, and to quote their helpline 'we absolutely hate this version'.

Interesting but unfortunate. Personally, I've had no problems whatsoever, but different systems react in different ways to the same software, especially when certain unpredictable combinations of programs cause unexpected conflicts. Still, I hope you found/find a working alternative, particularly on the virus question.

Here is a message I sent to David, but bears repeating here.
Hi David,
It sounds, most likely, that you have been infected by the klez virus 32.Klez.H@mm which is running rampant. My Virus Detection catches about 5-10 attempts to mail it to me every day.
You did not get it from me. Here is how it works. It comes as an attachment, that once opened, infects your system. It then enters the victims Outlook address book and takes names from it, sets up its own email engine, and uses other addresses as the "From:" address. This occurs unknown to the victim. Furthermore it can disable your anti virus system. Clever stuff. Full detail about it are at: http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.klez.h@mm.html
So what has happened is that you received email, with an attachment, bearing my name, but not from me, and it probably carrying the klez virus.
What to do. First never open an attachment unless you know it is coming. Second, while klez has a stock of Subject lines, always examine the subject line, they are kind of bland sounding. So if the subject line doesn't look like something the sender would send, beware also. Finally keep your virus protection definitions and software up to date. Programs, such as the one I use, scan both incoming and outgoing email and their attachments.
How to fix. Go to http://securityresponse.symantec.com/ and download the klez removal tool, follow directions and it will clean it out of your system. I went through this a week ago with another friend who go it.
Sorry for the bad news.

The above messages are correct. I'm into computers now. I build them for friends and make my own movies, editing and so forth.
Anyhow, GRISOFT is great, and they have a version that does not cost you anything, just keep upadating your virus defintions.
On firewalls, go to www.zonelabs.com, there is a free firewall called zonealarm that works really well. Steve Gibson also has a program there, after you install ZoneAlarm, that will check your system for open ports. Check it out. And also
NEVER OPEN AN ATTACHMENT UNLESS YOU KNOW AND TRUST THE PERSON SENDING IT. DELETE IT.

I am going to try out this "Grisoft." I have a three year old copy of Norton Anti-virus, but it always had a tendency to crash. Grisoft sounds like it is the answer to a maiden's prayer!

Yes I have used Grisoft for many years now and Zone Alarm. If you go to: www.grc.com this interesting site provides all sorts of computer stuff with links to other great free software to stop your computer from being invaded by hackers and spyware. Bob - do you use 'Ad-aware'? This handy free utilty checks your pc for spyware programmes sending your personal inforamtion out of your computer. I used it last week on a friends computer and found no less that 152 items that could be 'reporting' activity off his computer to any number of servers! We are about to build a pc to handle audio and video editing very soon. We have just purchased a digital 8 camera and wish to edit those family videos at last. I may well be picking brains!

In general, don't open emails - especially attachments - from someone you don't know. I once got an email that said in the subject line, 'Warning: you may have received a virus from me...' from a person I did not recognize but whom I thought may have been someone from one of the various music lists. IT WAS A VIRUS SCAM. Luckily I did not open the attachment. Again, the latter is of utmost importance: DO NOT OPEN attachments from strangers. Also, once you delete the email, EMPTY THE TRASH.

For your music and video editing PC. Make sure of a fast CPU, as much Memory as you can afford and large hardrive. Also, if any of your video files might be larger than 4 Gigabytes, use Windows 200 as your operating system, format the hard drive as NTFS, instead of FAT32. This way there is no limit to the size of your files. By the way, the limit is impose by Windows 98 or ME, not the size of your hard drive.

I would be looking at something like 200gig hard drive and maybe scsi, if I can afford it and a 2gig chip. I would like the luxury of one hard drive for the operating system and some audio/video files and another for just audio/video files. My music sequencer package uses plug ins and they are hungry for processor power. I want to be able, with audio, to playback about 30 audio tracks with plug ins without the 'system to slow' being flagged and for video, be able to take full bandwidth and edit it in something like Adobe Premier, then compress it to DVD! I think I have reached my limit with my Pentium 3/500mghtz chip! Your advice on the operating system is where I will admit my ignorance. I have to now consider upgrading my Logic Audio to another operating stystem to exploit the benefits of what is my main function on the PC - audio. I must research a little into what is best for that and consider the video side afterwards, although I want it to do both. I have recently been involved with an edit on 'Avid' and would not be able to bear 'rendering' time as it is processed on our domestic machine. The firewire from the digital 8 to our laptop is amazing. The capture quality is better than some of the digital tv tranmsissions over here, but I think the price to pay is something like 1mb per frame.

That's a shame Harry. I am sure there are others to work with Apple somewhere. Also I must mention what I think was a virus that arrived via an email on to my computer here, via Outlook Express. It said it was a returned email from 'Postmaster' and said 'Here at last' in the subject. I have sniffed around and this is typical of a virus, with an attached programme using the 'Postmaster' as a way of getting opened out of curiosity. I have done a thorough check with Grisoft and found nothing as I deleted it before any damage. I have not sent any attachments to anybody recently, so if you get something similar - beware!

Some body sent me this - it has stopped the virus being sent to everyone in my address book and I thought it might be useful here:
Subject: COMPUTER TRICK
This was in the last issue of "P C World" magazine. It does work!
As you may know, when/if a worm virus gets into your computer it heads
straight for your email address book and sends itself to everyone in there,
thus infecting all your friends and associates.
This trick won't keep the virus from getting into your computer, but it will
stop it from using your address book to spread further, and it
will alert you to the fact that the worm has gotten into your system.
Here's what you do:
First: Open your address book and click on "new contact" or "new person"
just as you would do if you were adding a new friend to your list of email
addresses.
Second: In the window where you would type your friend's FIRST name, type in
!000 (that's an exclamation mark followed by 3 zeros). In the window below
where it prompts you to enter the new email address, type in WormAlert.
Third: Then complete everything by clicking add, enter, OK, etc. A window
will pop up telling you the address is not correct. Accept this.
Now, here's what you've done and why it works: the "name" !000 will be
placed at the top of your address book as entry #1. This will be where
the worm will start in an effort to send itself to all your friends.
But when it tries to send itself to !000, it will be undeliverable
because of the phony email address you entered (WormAlert). If the first
attempt fails (which it will because of the phony address), the worm goes no
further and your friends will not be infected.
Here's the second great advantage of this method: If an email cannot be
delivered, you will be notified of this in your InBox almost immediately.
Hence, if you ever get an email telling you that an email addressed to
WormAlert could not be delivered, you know right away that you have the worm
virus in your system. You can then take steps to get rid of it.

We have received 4 the last couple of days at home. My email address is receiving loads of spam too. Try not to reply to any of it. If you do, they then know that you open the mail and reply, which means you are a better target than somebody who does not. They also direct you to ficticious web pages with 'error 404' all over the place. In the grand scheme of things they use your surfing habits to identify where you go and what you buy. I seriously still suggest a virus checker without fail and 'AD aware' the spyware utilty for removing offenders from your pc.

This mornings log on at home had no less than 10 virus emails sent to a number of email addresses we possess. Anybody who receives an email with an attachment from me please delete it immediately. It is probably being sent from other machines that have our email addresses in it. I have received 3 from forum members with a virus attached! This means we could end up in a circle of constantly receiving mail until the offending machine is found and cleaned up. John, I have done the address book fiddle you posted earlier and was surprised to see the same thing in our work address book too - so it must be a good idea. Anybody without a virus checker sending mail will never know what they are doing. Please consider downloading AVG mentioned earlier. I have scanned our PC and it is clean, as expected. It caught a virus on my machine yesterday and is recommended.
Is anybody else suffering? David, did you get sorted?

Fellow and sister suffers, I think we have entered the era of permanent virus assaults. It is like styrofoam beads in the ocean - here to stay. Like living with AIDS, it can be done but it takes a lot of attention.
The rules -- for now -- are the same. Run the latest anti-virus software, keep the definitions up to date, don't open attachments unless you know the source and know it is coming. A further precaution is to have your inbox set up with the Preview Pane *not* open. [That is where you have the list of emails above and the selected email is open below.] A lot of email is html email [looks like a web page] and that can bear scripts and other triggering mechanisms. Go to your view menu and make sure that is disabled. If you are suspicious of the email you can right click the email listing, in Outlook, and choose options that will give you the header information telling the path of the email message from source to you. This will often tell you if it is genuine.
My antivirus is continually catching virus laden attachments buried in the hundreds of spam emails I get. The ultimate solution has to be legislation to prevent mass emailing and summary executions of all virus creators.

AVG lists on their website the compatible operating systems. If yours is not on it, it won't work (like with MAC!).
David, I have received a few emails from people who are replying to emails I have never sent - ! - and they say there is usually an attachment relating to soulfuldetroit. If the anti-virus program is working the attachment doesn't show up. That has happened with me in reverse, where someone from the forum sent me an email that they did not send on their own. I hope this does not mean the forum is infected but precautions should be taken.
So, I amend my previous warning and must add - even if you know the person, BE CAREFUL OF ATTACHMENTS. Send that person a separate email confirming they have sent you something they want you to have or that you have REQUESTED.

Thanks for raising the point.
I'm glad to say that the forum cannot be infected as the web hosts have all the armoury that one could ever wish.
The web site is not situated on my computer/premises.
Another point;SoulfulDetroit is on one server and Fab Ruins is on another site. Yet both servers are being bombarded with e-mail viruses.
I just think the virus is rampant right now. I had a hell of a time for a couple of days, and it seems to pick up words AND addresses from within your database.
If anyone is still worried, follow Lowell's instructions on this thread on May 14th.
Once that fixed my problem, I only have to remember and not open any attachments from strange sources.

I must be lucky with this, I can't open those zip files ever..So when I see that it says zip I just delete it, but I e-mail the person to see if I know them. I never keep an addess book , I have everything memorized..literally ...I am wierd that way with numbers and e-mails..Just call me rain -woman..
I have gotten this virus many, many, times...and Ironically it has lead me to people that knew Tammi...one guy is a friend of Ralph Terrana's.

I received two identical copies of this message yesterday, from two different addresses - and I do not know either sender.
There were two attachments: tab..bat and tour103[1].jpg
Here is the text of the message:
"Klez.E is the most common world-wide spreading worm.It's very dangerous by corrupting your files.
Because of its very smart stealth and anti-anti-virus technic,most common AV software can't detect or clean it.
We developed this free immunity tool to defeat the malicious virus.
You only need to run this tool once,and then Klez will never come into your PC.
NOTE: Because this tool acts as a fake Klez to fool the real worm,some AV monitor maybe cry when you run it.
If so,Ignore the warning,and select 'continue'.
If you have any question,please mail to me."
As my virus scanner kicked in the moment the message arrived, I have an uneasy feeling that this message and its attachments are highly suspect. (The image is evidently from a porn site.)
I'd strongly suggest that anyone receiving this "helpful" mail delete it immediately, and on no account run an unknown program from an unknown source such as this.

I have installed AVG and it has reported "no viruses found".
I'm amazed that this is free of charge.
Is there any other essential software out there free of charge. eg Firewall!

Incidentally, there appears to be an epidemic of virues/worms at present, so do take care, folks. As moderator of the Trojan Records Forum, I've had pm's from several regular posters who are also experiencing similar problems, so we are not alone here on this site.
And, speaking of replies to messages that were never sent - I keep receiving "thank you for your suggestion" messages, purporting to come from Microsoft. Each has a .scr attachment (usually sets the alarm bells ringing for me) and a handy-dandy Klez worm.
Further to that, the only suggestions I have ever (ocasionally) made to Microsoft have been verbal and in the heat of the moment, on the lines of where Mr Gates can stick his operating system. Needless to say, I have never emailed these suggestions to the company.

The McAfee virus checking software is only as good as it is up to date. Assuming you installed it straight from the box (or it was pre-installed), the virus definitions will be several months out of date. You should either update it from the McAfee website, or download the alternative free software as recommended above. By the way, if you do download and run the AVG program, remember to disable or uninstall the McAfee software first. It's not possible to run two of these programs concurrently.

I use it on Windows 98 - I am not sure whether it works for any other platform. If you are unsure what spyware is go to: www.google.com and search 'spyware'. It will be a surprise! Then there is 'scumware' - go to www.scumware.com and look at this very informative page about current trends in getting you to click on things on the internet to pay people money, done by installing software on your pc without you knowing and pulling your strings!

hey does anyone know if RIMMER.ZIP is a virus attachment..I just got an e-mail from someone I don't know and the subject line is Deon Jackson, who I have been looking...I get so many e-mails for the book, but rarly do I get attachments..
I get a lot of things all day long...
I can't open zip files, I haven't downloaded a zip drive yet...I have not been able to download the suggestion that you gave me Dave..when the e-mail came with the serial number password to download..it wouldn't let me do it..

As a matter of security, NEVER open an attachment from an unknown sender. A zip file can be perfectly harmless, and does not necessarily contain a virus, but it's always better to play it safe.
A zipfile is simply a folder whose data has been "squashed" using certain software - (data compression) in order to make it a smaller attachment when sent via email. You don't need a zip drive to decompress them, just the relevant software. (Winzip is the most common, and there's a "free" version available.)
People really don't use zipped folders much these days, so I'd treat any such arrival with the greatest of caution. Assume it's suspicious and delete it. Shoot first - ask questions later!
Anyone who's really anxious to send you large files should make contact first, so you'll be prepared for any attachments they subsequently send you.

ah thanks Ritchie..I do delete e-mails that I don't know..I never down load anything unless I know them,But with so many people sending me info...eeeeks..This particular one was so tempting becasue of the subject matter..Deon Jackson..
So far all of the suspicous e-mails that I HAVE recieved that I wasn't sure could be Tammi correnspondence, I just e-mail that adddress and ask them...I get a lot of zip file attchments all the time...My computer at work did not have win zip and I don't have it yet on this new one..
Thanks, I know if they are legit they'll get back to me..You are brilliant when it comes to this stuf Ritchie.

So far the folks that got back to me have somehow been asociated with this site, but they say they did not send an e-mail..I know that's been happening to a lot of you..Just wanted to share..
This last person knows Weldon and told me he visits Soulful Detroit. So the subject line was specific to what I am doin..it said "Discography/Deon Jackson, this has me wondering if it's the virus acting on it's own or someone who is looking at us..I almost openned this e-mail, because this week I began my research for Tammi's Discography and I have been looking fore Deon Jackson..

Watch out for this new virus. It is called VBS/VBSWG.aq@MM . There is more info on it at: http://vil.nai.com/vil/content/v_99506.htm
It puts "Shakira's pictures", in the subject line of an incoming email. It should be deleted and not opened. There are hundreds making the rounds. It was discovered 26/6/2002.

Erik - you're not alone. There really is some virus-driven craziness abroad today.. this morning I received a "new game" from "Ralph Terrana". Something similar happened to Vickie. Ritchie Hardin - (er, that's me, isn't it?) - apparently sent her a zip file today: a "special excite game" (as if!). This evening I was mailed by Weldon (NOT!) - with the "Leave This Here" subject-line.
I can't help being reminded of "The Thing" - a bunch of paranoid friends trying to tell the humans from the "aliens"....

my yahoo account is set up to divert bulk mail to a bulk mail folder and most of the emails received there are virus scams described above. generally if I get an email from anyone from the forum and it appears in that folder, it is deleted and the trash is emptied. Usually if it opened by mistake, the attachments have been cleaned and I can 'block address'.

Hello All:
I just received "no content" e-mails from Harry and Philly Soul man to my incoming server. Both had Java Script content containing control codes.
I knew these did not come from the senders as they do not have my private address that these people have. It appears our "TRASH MAN" in tracing back to our mail servers via numerical address and deriving text addresses from there. I am going to try to set up a traceback from here to find out where this crap is comming from.
Since these are false addresses, and not generated by the people in the header, I just checked with a friend in the Michigan internet task force and according to him this is fraud under Michigan law. Not that anything can be done, sadly.
I have a good mind to set up a file full of random code and send it back to him and fill his server but that would be reducing myself to his level.
In any case, all be aware that some mail under the guise of addresses of people on this forum may contain dangerous content Java Script and worms. Keep your guard up like always. And now we cannot trust direct mail from those on the forum.
As I get more info from the reverse trace I will post it here if I can find where it is comming from.

I am getting emails with the subject line "smart game" or "a great game" or "fun game"
there is text and an attachment..the text says..You are the first to try this new game, I hope you like it...I have gotten it from Weldon, Phiilyman, Ritchie and David..(Not) but that's why I know it's not real..none of these folks would send me games..I can barely make my computer work..
I deleted them.
