As I said before, Lowell told me last year that many surprises would come out of the creation of this web site, and today I received the biggest surprise to date.

I received an e-mail from Ms Joanne Bratton asking me to call her at her home in Las Vegas.

Five minutes later I was talking to Joanne and Ed Wingate...yes Mr Wingate himself!

I mentioned that I had been talking about him during most of last week! and especially to Ed Wolfrum. They were excited to hear Ed's name. I will contact you off forum Ed.

Joanne mentioned that Bob D'Orleans still works for her. We may expect a visit from Bob I think.

Joanne must also be psychic...it had always bugged me that I didn't know the origins of the Ric Tic label name. Without any prompting, Joanne told me the background.

Joanne had a son to the boxer Johnnie Bratton whom they christened Derek Truman Bratton. Derek was knicknamed Ric and frequently called Ric Tic. Sadly Derek died aged only 12 years.

Joanne then mentioned Myto Music, one of Northern Soul's greatest Publishers. Myto was named after Joanne's Aunt Myrtle and her cousin Toni.

Finally, they both invited me out to dinner next time I'm in Vegas....and I've been there twice in the last three years!

Joanne has still to see the web site. Contact has been made thru the Free Press article.

Mr Bill McGraw of the Free Press...I owe you another beer!!

They are also wondering how Edwin Starr is.

If anyone sees him please pass on the message.

Hi David
What a great site you have. So many people and memories. As I read the messages I remember things I had forgotten. It keeps coming back more and more. I'm supposed to hear from Edwin the first part of next month when he gets back from tour. Just seeing names like Jamerson, Bob Babbit, Popcorn Wylie, Russ, Don Davis, LeBaron Taylor and many others, I can still see them in the studio or control room, doing their thing, which was always great. My only regret was Ed selling out to Berry. Oh, well that's life. I see Joanne and Ed all the time, they live across town from me, here in Vegas. In fact, I was there yesterday and Joanne and I were reminiscing about everything. She doesn't have email or uses a computer for anything. Anytime she wants something from the internet, she calls me and I get it for her. She's a phone person.
Anyway I hope to hear from a lot of the guys and I tell my stories about anything that I remember of the glorious years. Again, thanks for the site.

It's one of my favorite instrumentals and has lots of energy. When us punters regularly say "I wish I could have been in the studio when that was recorded", well this is mine! And who were the Quartet?

Many thanks from an appreciative record collector!

I just talked to Joanne about "All Turned On".
She couldn't remember the muscians on it either. The way it came about is, when "Hungry for Love" started to be big as the "B" side of JJ Barnes, we released it on its own and had to have a "B" side for it. We were always cutting tracks that had a good feel to them, and then trying to get the right lyrics for them, sometimes it took awhile. When "Hungry for Love" came out "All Turned On" was one of those tracks and became the "B" side. It had to be the people we used a lot, like Jamerson or Babbit on bas, etc, etc.

Hope this sheds a little light on it.

Hi Bob, I think you're mixing J.J. Barnes up with Tony Micale of The Reflections. Tony recorded a vocal version of "Hungry For Love" called "I Live The Life I Love." He told me that he was asked if he minded if the instrumental track to his vocal was released, and as it was his B-side he didn't care. But it was a massive hit while his 45 sank without trace. Ring any bells?

There is no need for you to apoligize either, I didn't think you were out of line in any way. Even when I told Joanne I thought it was JJ she took my word for it, until we started to run events down as they happened, and she and you were right, it was Tony.
Also, I don't remember doing anything for Joanne & Ed at Bell Sound, even though I was working there at the time. How we hooked up was while working at Bell, I helped a friend of mine, Bob Goldman, who wanted to start a studio. He had gotten my name from somebody, and said he wanted me to look at a site that he thought would OK to turn into a studio. It had been a Filipino restaurant in the Hotel American on 47th St in New York. I said we could make it work and I helped build it with him as the tech. On my off hours I would do some sessions there. Anyhow, Joanne refreshed my memory, and said she and Ed came to NYC to do some recording and needed to do it right away and evidently Bell was booked solid and somebody told the to call a couple of studios and one of them was Mirasound. Mirasound said they would get in touch with the engineer and see when and was told to come in the next day. And that was my first contact with Joanne and Ed. In fact, at the end of session is when they asked me if I would like to come to Detroit to build a studio for them. And according to Joanne, I said "Detroit???. You mean to move there?" She said "Yes". I told her I would think about. I just asked her yesterday how long it was before I answered her. She said it was three days when I called her and said I had nothing else to and I thought it would be a blast. And that was the beginning of GW Sudio. In fact when I moved to Detroit, as you know Ed owned the Twenty Grand, and next door was what was called The Manor House, and that's where I lived until I found my own place. Another aside note. While I lived there, there was somebody living above me, that at 3 or 4 in the morning, would be making these foot stomping sounds, in rythm, and it was loud. I finally asked "Who the hell is up there doing all that noise?" The answer was "A guy name Stevie Wonder". Before he became "STEVIE WONDER".
Just a little trivia.

Anyhow, YES I would like a tape of anything you have on Ric-Tic or GW. Contact me at my email and we'll get it together.

Thanks
BobD

I take it the manor house was on Warren on the east side of the motel?

Was your first meeting with Joanne in 1963 or 1964?

What was the Golden World building used for before Joanne bought it. Apparently it was built in 1947.

Mirasound was the NYC studio used by Phil Spector before he settled in L.A. at Gold Star. The Crystals Uptown/ There's no Other was done there as was Hey Girl by Freddie Scott Baby It's you by the Shirelles(originally a demo), The Locomotion and a host of the Don Kirschner stuff.
The engineer of choice was Brooks Arthur and one of his trademarks was his use of tape slap on the hi hat and snare/sidestick in a 16th note pattern.

Alegro Sound was in the basement of 1650 Broadway.
The Tokens used it quite extensively and He's so fine was recorded there as well as See you in September and tons of Laurie stuff. If you listen close to the end of He's so Fine you can hear the Broadway subway train going by.
Speaking of such things, at the end of Up Up and Away by the Fifth Dimension, whose vocals were done at Las Vegas Sound, a train can be heard as well. I should build a facility near a train corridor for a bit of luck and for future anoraks to enjoy, Eh???

Bob (Dorleans),

Refering to your posting of May 25, 2002 - 4:46PM, perhaps I should add, for the benifit of the forum, something to make clear that Bob Goldman, of Mirasound, turned the recording world literally upside down when he blew all the one inch eight tracks off the map with his astounding two inch sixteen track custom built Ampex MM-1000 prototype. Talk about pioneering!

I will never forget the shock I felt when I first heard about this development. We were just getting the studios fixed up really nice with dual Scully eight tracks in each studio to provide a reliable backup, when this unheard of development came on the scene.

Bob Goldman was the fellow who took the pioneering title away from the likes of Les Paul, Atlantic, and Motown, regarding multi-track.

Further, soon after all this happened, he had at Mirasound, what had to be the first 24 track two inch machine ever built: Another custom Ampex.

I spent an afternoon with Bob Goldman once, and he even took me over to his home. What an operator! He truely knew no fear.

I worked with an Ampex 24 track version around 8 years ago at a studio in Atlanta called 2560, owned by Brick. I had to anticipate the punch ins and the reels used to fly off the machine, and aligning was a nightmare, otherwise it was a decent machine. They offered me a gig there having liked my work but I am not really an engineer, per se I just have a vast knowledge of the application of the artform.
The studio was aesthetically funky which works fine for me.
Sigma was the 2nd studio to have 24 track.

By the way, the old studio, Virtue which is now an empty lot thanks to temple university, when they got their four track back in the day had people saying, "Yeah, Virtue got 4 tracks. One for hand claps, one for foot stomping, one for finger snaps and one for tambourine!!"

Mike

Just a note to let you know the whole story about 16 track.
Bob Goldman and I went to Ampex in Redwood City to talk to them about various things. While walking through one of their warehouses, I spotted an old RCS VTR transport. Since everybody was always asking, "More tracks", I asked Leon, "Hey, you got the transport for 2" tape, why not make a 16 track recording machine. He was doubtful, but we went to R&D and hashed it over, and then the big boys ok'd it for R&D to work on it. The biggest problem was the 16 heads, mainly crosstalk. Anyhow, the first prototype was shipped to Mirasound, by then in the Henry Hudson Hotel. Now, what do you do for a console. We took a piece of beaver board, cut 16 slots in it, put 16 cheap faders in them, wired the output directly to the machine. I called a band I worked with before, Vanilla Fudge, and asked them if they would like to come in and records whatever they wanted, using the new 16 track, at no cost. They did and , as they say, the rest is history.

Couple of aside notes.
As you know the VU meters on the previous machines were lined up vertically
1
2
3
4 ETC

When I played back the first time, reading the VU meters on the machine, the reading looked funny. I usually put the bass on 1, bass drum on 2, and so forth. When I read the VU's on the machine I realized that the R&D had done them horizontally.
1 2
3 4 etc

The other was when the Vanilla Fudge asked me to splice. There was no cutting block available for 2" tape, but thank God I had come from the old, old school when there weren't splicing blocks. Make your marks for the splice, align the marks together, demagnetized scissors, make diaganol cut, using 1" splicing tape, splice it together, it wasn't pretty but it worked.
I know it's not soul, but that's where I did the first Leslie West "Mountain" album, with Felix Pappalardi. We then used Electric Lady Studio after that.

I hope I didn't bore anyone.

Zowie! I was unaware that you were so much involved in the 16 track development. This must have been just before you became involved with Golden World.

You mentioned "Leon." For some reason the name "Leon Wortman" popped into my mind. Have I got that right. It seems to me that this must be the Leon (at Ampex) to whom you are referring.

I wonder what ever happened to Bob Goldman. I have the impression that he developed a problem with being underfunded, but I never did know the outcome of it all.

One thing that really impressed the Hell out of me about the Mirasound that I saw at the Henry Hudson Hotel was their wonderful machine shop: Everything you needed to build your own tape recorder! Now that was my kind of recording studio!

Thanks for a fantastic offering, Bob. "...didn't bore anyone." Ha! I'm in charge of that around here. Your offering is profound recording history! If anyone is bored by it, they have no business reading this forum!

This forum is very addictive and time consuming. But oh what fun! I keep plugging away. I must get back to my letter answering. Lately I have gotten into these impromptu quickie postings, while leaving the letters hanging. There is never enough time in the day. I sure hope that you will keep hanging in there Bob, because you are one of the really heavy boys that can offer great stuff.

Best wishes,

Mike McLean

Good morning Bob,
Here are the credits from Willie Kendrick's Golden World 45 to see if they jog your memory some more;

"Stop This Train"
written by J. Stewarrd and P. Medley
Produced by Bob Christopher
Arranged by Robert Banks

"Fine As Wine"
Written by J. Shaw and B. Stevenson
Produced by Bob Christopher
Arrnaged by Robert Banks

I think the writers were regulars at the Brill Building.
By the way; Is Mira pronounced MY-RA or MIR-RA ?

Best wishes, Graham

Many a true word is spoken in jest....I think some of those Golden World Reflections songs were done in NY - so they just may have been recorded at Mira.

Bob (D'Orleans)

Ed and Joanne had another, and it seems, more obscure label called 'J & W' which ran, I think, in 1964. Did you produce anything on this label? I'll give a discography and maybe the other chaps can add to it:

J & W - ???? - Seven Sons Singers - Running The Race
J & W - 1000 - Stewart Ames - King For A Day/Angelina Oh Angelina
J & W - 1001 - Sue Perrin - I Can't Let Go/Clickety Clack Heart
J & W - 100 - Willie Morganfield - What More Do You Want
J & W - 105 - Earnest Thomas - While I Can

The Stewart Ames' track is worth quite a bit of money and is played quite a lot over here! Sue Perrin recorded on the first Golden World series of 45s! For us Brits, Willie Morganfield sounds too much like an old Burnley/Man United football player!

Thanks for listening Bob and conveying our messages to Ed and Joanne!

A follow up call has been arranged for next week.

If you have any questions which are not too deep, please let me know.

I believe that J&W #100/105 are on a totally different label to #1000/1001, are they not?

Also worth noting that "King for a day" shares (almost) the same backing track as Jock Mitchell's "Nomad woman" on Golden Hit, of which I'd love a clean playing copy, please!

That record was on Keith Rylatt's list for about £1 and Keith had to persuade me to take it...I hadn't heard it at the time.

Tony - what I also ment to say was - welcome!! and if that was you on that special, the groups vocal harmonies were fantastic. I had never seen a picture or video of the group live and it was a treat. 'Girl in the candy store' is one of my favourite Golden World tracks. Unless I am on the wrong track here - I am at work glancing through the forum quickly! I will take a look at your web page.

"Just Like Romeo and Juliet" is timeless. You can be so proud of that record.

Unfortunately Ed and Joanne are not on-line. I will be speaking to Joanne next week however, and will pass on your regards.

From a fan of the Reflections and all of the Golden World output, I thank you! Also, is it true you are the Tony Michaels who sang 'Picture Me And You' and 'I Love The Life I Live (And Live The Life I Love)'? (I'm sure someone mentioned this on the Forum but I'm darned if I can find it!) That is a great record and worth a quite a bit of money among us record collectors.

I believe there is a Reflections album on Golden World but haven't seen it. All of the tracks are on 45 except 'On Broadway', 'Gonna Turn The Place Out' and 'Couldn't Make It Like That'. Have any of our Forum members heard these?

The Reflections LP - the stand out track for me is their version of "On Broadway". Set at an uptempo pace it really kicks along culminating in a wonderful instrumental bit at the end just after the most wonderful harmony bit by the guys, "On Broooooadwaaaaaaaay".....fabulous! Quite a hard LP to find.

Flynny
-p.s. My fav Reflections track is "June bride" - great lyric, vocals, backing track.....thank you Tony for that one in particular! :-)

John, I don't suppose Keith still has a spare on his list for £1! Go on then £2! To cut a long story short, I went to a record fair in Manchester over the weekend and found Theresa Lindsey - 'It's Love' on Correc-Tone. Needless to say Gail wouldn't let me buy it! Aaaaagh! I might start collecting rare stamps instead, they've got to be less expensive. (And not the JJ Barnes & Steve Mancha album either).

You still have a full head of hair (so what if it's a little grey), you still have that lean, trim body (so what if takes you an hour to get up once you sit down), you've got all of your teeth which is a good thing, and what about that wonderful laugh?
