I am pleased to say that our story appears on page one of today's Detroit Free Press.

The FREEP as it is affectionately known is the area's largest selling newspaper.

Unfortunately the story carries some mis-sampled items as Northern Soul....just one of those things. Bill must have used a copy of Rod Dearlove's discographies and plucked the data at random.

On the whole, it is a great piece of free advertising for the web site and I think we can expect some kind of surge in page views today.

My thanks go to Bill for all his efforts in putting this story together.

You can view the on-line version at:-

Wow, great story, Dave! Colour me envious, especially after reading about what you got to hear, like that Dennis Coffey tape! I hope to go to Detroit (5th time) in a few weeks to catch George Clinton, unfortunately we never have more than a day or 2, so planned excursions in search of music & industrial history & decay quickly turn into 'Let's go look at that building!', 'Lemme go look in that house across the street' and suddenly the day's over (or suddenly 2 cops are asking you if you like going to the ghetto (sic) to take pictures like last time, but I digress)... anyhow, glad you guys had such a great trip.... /Erik

Thanks ErikT.O.

The story, although only a few hours old, has already had an impact.

Bill has been contacted by the son of Marty Eisner, Bill Eisner. Mr Eisner is offering to provide a picture of his father's wonderful club, The 20 Grand.

I didn't think the Freep's write-up was bad at all, bearing in mind how journalists have a remarkable talent for mangling even the most simple of facts! I'm sure it'll be good publicity for the site and that can't be anything but a good thing. Fame at last!

Hello Everyone...I guess you know the first thing I did when I woke up was to put my coffee on and turn on the computer and type in Freep. Congratulations David and Harry. It is a wonderful article. I am truly overjoyed Marty Eisner has been in contact. I know you wanted the picture of the 20 Grand.
"Hello Harry!" I'm on my way to pick up the Free Press.

Hi Sis

Yours was the first email I received today. The Freep was my first post of call! Thanks :o)

Hi Ritchie

It would be very easy for Bill to get it wrong. I had to repeat myself to many people over there because I have a broad Glaswegian accent and talk very quickly!

If I hadn't given him a copy of the Rod Dearlove's excellent Collector's Guide, he would have hardly put a foot wrong....and he did it without a tape recorder which is even more difficult.

Bill did us proud and I look forward to meeting him at Cleethorpes next year...yes he was that impressed with the Northern Soul story.

Hi to Sis, I am so pleased that you enjoyed the story. You know it is a tribute to the people who gave us the music...and in particular people like your late brother. You can be so proud of him.

I just posted this link on the Fab Ruins Forum.

This 'current venue' listing will give you a feel for the extent of the love of sixties soul music in the United Kingdom.

David and others:
In the Freep's story, he mentioned some British compilations of made-in-Detroit stuff that can't be found in the U.S. Do you have any suggested titles. Since I'm in the UK now, I might try and track some of that stuff down.

Top of pageBottom of page   By acooolcat (61.222.95.58 - 61.222.95.58) on Friday, May 10, 2002 - 11:10 am:

mc5, It's difficult to know what our own personal taste is - but Goldmine and Kent are the two main UK CD merchants issuing Detroit related 60's soul. They both have websites.
Goldmine's "Essential Detroit" is a good CD, featuring 45s from various recording companies. They also issued Thelma and D-Town label compilations.
Kent have released a few CDs of RCA's and Dave Hamilton's Detroit recordings which are worth buying while you're in the UK; but you can always get these via mail-order. Try Ritchie's web site.
How about going to a 60's soul night while you're in the UK? You can have a pint of warm English beer for me while you're there! Preferably Tetley's.
Cheers,
Graham

Graham's recommendations are exactly what I'd have suggested..

There's also a load of Motown goodies that we Brits are lucky to have issued here too!

thanks everybody -- those are great suggestions, and I'll be the coolest guy on the block when I go back to Michigan with some of these.

As far as going to a soul night, I'd love to, and I'm investigating which one I'll ultimately attend. Too bad I'll miss the monthly one in Kingston upon Thames, which is where I'm staying. But my last week here I'll be staying in Central London. I'll let you know once I make plans...

MC5-

When I went to England I managed to find a few Detroit/Northern Soul compilations at Tower Records in London. There were also quite a few hip record stores in Portabello. Is this Ben???

Later,
Eric

Hey everybody, I just wanted to say thanks again for the suggestions. I found a record shop in Kingston today and picked up "Thelma's Detroit Collective" and "Detroit Soul from the Vaults Vol. 2" and they're both FABULOUS!!!

But while I'm grateful for the suggestion, it's also a little bit depressing. I consider myself a Detroit music lover par excellence (check out my handle). But for some reason, this stuff was COMPLETELY under my radar. It just seems like I should have known about this stuff before.

Well, now that we've given you Detroit soul, maybe someday you can export something equally cool to us. Maybe snooker? (Sorry -- I've still got the Ebdon v. Hendry dramatic finish going through my head).

I just went to the mailbox to pick up yesterday's mail...I just can't keep up, and my cousin George Troia sent me both of the articles from the paper. What a great write-up. You should be really proud of that. It's great to have your work recognized in a major newspaper!!

Hi CD buyers. At my local Record Fair (Show) in Maidstone, Kent, there are a couple of dealers selling Goldmine CD's for £5 a time. They are good titles too - `Thelma Story`, `Popcorn's Detroit Soul Party`, `Dancing in D Town` etc. I checked with Goldmine to see if they were not stolen but they confirmed that they were now deleted and therefore sold to dealers very cheap. There was also a lot of Goldmine vinyl. So keep a look out at UK fairs. Keith

Just read the article. The paragraph that says you have a voice like Sean Connery, David! It follows on to say you have visited 700 sites in the city. If it was backwards it would be 007!! Just an observation. Excellent revue - great reading. I am glad the talc was mentioned.

Rab C Nesbitt is a character in a Scottish TV comedy, who speaks with an almost undecipherable accent (to us Sassenachs, anyway!)
