The programme for the tour for Freda, Martha and Edwin states in relation to Freda Payne.

....Berry Gordy wrote 3 tracks for Freda and recorded them at United Sound - she was 13 years old - went to New York with Mama and Scherrie Payne to get Roulette to issue them but Berry hadn't signed Freda to a contract and negotiations broke down - Freda recalls the titles The Moon Rock, Applications For Love and Save Me A Star (the latter we know on the Supremes' Florence Ballard). This would be 1960/61...before Cogger installed the DM library system.

Anyone know if those titles were issued anywhere?

BTW, I enjoyed the Dancing in the Street concert so much, I am gonna see them all again on May 17th at Manchester - seat C15 - if anyone wants to chat to me!

Getting ready for the Originals on June 2.....sadly I will have to turn down all invitations from Queen Elizabeth to attend her jubilee functions - must get me priorities right!!

There is a strong chance that Freda Payne will see this conversation thread today whilst performing in the UK

and Freda, a big thank you from me and all the guys for the great shows.....I'll be seeing you AGAIN on Friday May 17, so please come out with Martha and Edwin and say hello.....and I shall be shouting for ODDS AND ENDS and He Who Laughs Last (is supposed to laugh last but it just don't happen that way-y-y....)

This is a message to Marilyn

I tried to get to see Freda to show her the picture that you put up. I tried really hard but I am afraid that I wasn't able to get to see her at all. As a result I was unable to pass on on your telephone number/email address.

A friend who has also downloaded the picture tried to get to show it to Freda and also failed.

I am really sorry Marilyn - I did try my hardest.

I have a trade advert for Freda from her Invictus period with her surname spelt "Paine". Anyone know why?
Love her "Sad sad September" and "On easy street"* from her MGM LP.

*- Much better than O.C.Smiths version IMO

Wasn't me, John, but nice call that person! :-)
I'd have asked her to do "On easy street" but it would need the full string section to do it justice and make my ears bleed! ;-)

John/Marilyn - I could possibly try as I will be at the Palladium in London, next week (2/6/2002) for the 'Dancin in the Streets' tour with Freda Payne, Edwin Starr and Martha Reeves. You never know! I also have just had a brainwave and will try something else too.

John - I could ring you up on our mobile on the 2/6. I could then listen with one ear to The Originals and you could have a second bash of the Palladium gig ha ha!

I have a ticket going spare for the Palladium...but I have seen the DITS tour twice now and a third time might be just too much of a good thing. You will enjoy it though. Martha is singing lower and always puts her heart into it. Edwin never puts in a performance less than 110%. And then there is Freda....when you see her and then hear her, you are gonna think, you've gone to heaven and back...wow

Too bad for me, I got a bl**dy good seat at the Palladium and its now up for grabs...but the Originals are a group I just gotta see. I know CP ain't gonna be there but Walter, Hank and Freddie will be there....I aint gonna miss it.

John - enjoy The Originals. If I hear of anybody that needs a good seat I will let you know.It is a pity to have an empty seat that close to the front.

John/all

I must say last nights 'Dancin in the Streets' show at The London Palladium was electric. A full house and Freda Payne as a guest was terrific. The quality of the show was superb. Martha Reeves was so at home on stage chatting with member of the audience and even got one guy up on stage to dance. She recognised him from other shows he had attended. Edwin Starr was as professional as ever and all three sang some of the greatest Motown hits we love and cherish. What struck me was how they performed other artists hits, more than their own. Very humbling. Freda sang her best Invictus stuff and the backing musicians and singers were as good as the records. It was a great great atmosphere and with a night like that, I cannot wait for the next one.

John - I also met Freda Payne around the back of the Palladium at the stage door. I managed to get the message to her!

The Queens jubilee celebrations went down fine yesterday, with the concert at Buckingham Palace. There was a Motown tribute which I saw part of on the tv and we heard 'Dancin in Street' again on there! Then later we heard it again and then the BBC jingle had the riff again played throughout the evening. To think Martha was in the country I think it would have been swell to see her perform the song, but it may have been a bit of a dash for her to get to High Wycombe for the last concert of the 'Dancin in the Streets' tour. Motown lives on and is stronger than ever here in London Town!

See....I told you it was a good show...

Did you notice in the program that one of Freda's first songs to sing was "June is BUSTING out all over"..........it should have been retitled to Freda!
