Hi to everyone at Soulful Detroit.

Im here with my friend Harry Dhesi for eight days.

We flew in from London Heathrow yesterday and arrived at 5 pm local time.

Our motel is based in Farmington Hills which is just outside Detroit, on the north west side.

Within 5 minutes of arrival at the motel the telephone rang and guess who was on the other end.our very own Millie Felch!

Millie then floored me by saying we could go and meet Armen Boladian in Southfield at a gospel recording session. I dont have to tell you what my reply was!

Within half an hour we were shaking hands with the great man himself. I was lucky enough to have in my possession the westbound cd booklet which Armen graciously autographed. After about 20 minutes we went into the recording session which was in the Christian Tabernacle church.

The choir was fronted by Bill Moss and the Celestials which were basically 5 singers with their own band. The Christian Tabernacle choir was 50 strong.

I dont have to tell you that we had the most amazing evening and all from the front row!

I would like to personally thank Millie for getting our holiday off to a sensational start.

Bet you wish you were here.

Hi David!
I'm so glad you enjoyed yourself last night! It was a great pleasure for me just to watch the look on your face during the recording session/video shoot! The singing was amazing, the ambiance in the church was warm and loving, and it was just an awesome evening...even though we got soaked to the gills from the rain! I hope you and Harry found your way back to the motel alright! Next on the agenda will be a tour of Masterpiece Sound (Sylvia Moy's studio)and lunch with the lady herself!!

Derrick organised flowers and a great day for my wife and I when we visited in 1999.That is where I proposed to her. I would like them to see some wedding pictures if possible. (If they cannot remember me - just mention kissing the floor -then they will!!)

Day 2

Starts with a visit to mission control at Lowell's house in Farmington...

Harry-Lowell-David
Harry, David and Lowell @ mission control.

By 11.30 we find ourselves in the company of George Katzakis of the Royaltones.

We go to a nearby Coney Island where George begins to unravel some of the mysteries of The Royaltones.

He tells us about Special on Duffield and Twirl on Alexandrine. Heady days, Fred Flowerday and Harry Balk.

The crucial role which Babbitt and Coffey played in the development of the Detroit Sound is clearly obvious.

Later that evening we met Frances Nero at Fishbones In Southfield. Frances recalls her days at Motown and her recording at Shrine.

She sends her greetings to Ian W and everyone at SoulfulDetroit.

Tomorrow we have lined up a visit to one of the most important people in Detroit music history.

We will keep you posted.

Hi David,

It was good talking with you this evening, and I'm so glad you had a good day hanging out with George Katsakis and Frances Nero. You and Harry should come up to the Clawson Inn on Saturday night...I'll probably come up there with a friend of mine, and it seems to me that you and Harry need an evening of nothing but relaxation, conversation, good music, and great food! I'll give Sylvia a call tomorrow so hopefully we'll get together with her Thursday or Friday!

Have another great day tomorrow!

David:

I spoke with Sylvia Moy today and she received a phone call from Frances Nero yesterday regarding your visit here. She had a death in the family, but promised that she'd give me a call to let me know when we might get together with her...I suggested we just come to Masterpiece Sound if that's easier for her and she said that might be alright. Anyway, I hope you're having a wonderful time and I'll call you as soon as I hear from Sylvia.

Day 3

We started the day by photographing many sites which we have still to feature in SoulfulDetroit.

100 miles later [yes!] I had photographs of 36 buildings and 5 vacant lots.

At 12 PM we arrived at the house of the legendary Mike Terry. Mike made us so welcome and proceeded to recall his days with Popcorn, Hoe Hunter, Jack Ashford and Ralph Terrana.

All the work of putting SoulfulDetroit together was vindicated. We were on Cloud 9 as we left Mikes home 75 minutes later.

Next we drove down to the Lower Eastside to meet another legend, Lottie the Body. Lottie recalled her nights at the 20 Grand with all the legends of our music scene. I took a number of snaps which I am looking forward to seeing and posting here. Another great character from the halcyon days of 60s Detroit.

A couple of miles away is Honest? Johns which claims to have the best jukebox in the United States. When we find Edwins Back Street we agree that this claim is not so far fetched.

Only in Detroit!

Day 4

We headed for one of the few studios to survive from the sixties era. GM Bumpshops now operates as the Recording Institute of Detroit owned by Greg Reilly and Bob Dennis. Greg very kindly allowed us to photograph the interior of their three studios.

From there we headed to Woodlawn Cemetery to pay respects to Johnnie Mae Matthews who, sadly, passed away in January.

At 1 PM we had an appointment with another Northern Soul hero, Clay McMurray.

Five and a half hours later we emerged elated from Clays studio on Livernois. We had listened to Thelma and Golden World recordings all afternoon. Clay also talked of his days at Motown and current projects including his wife Pree who sat right through our reminiscences.

Ed Wolfrum, engineer at Golden World, United Sound and Motown topped off the afternoon by joining us half way though our discussions.

Ed engineered Edwins Back Street. We were on Cloud 9 again!

David,

You should call Dave Clark at DLC Design in Wixom, Michigan. He was was the technical chief under mixing chief Lawrence T. Horn at Holland Dosier Holland studios in the Tower theatre. When they started out at the Tower, Bob Dennis worked there with him as the disc cutting chief.

I remained behind at Motown as the chief cook and bottle washer.

I have known Dave since we were 15 years old. He worked for Motown for several years, and used to take care of the studio that we built at Golden World on Davison Avenue (The DAF, or Davison Avenue Facility).

He built the binaural headphone system for the multi room studio at Hitsville (now the museum.) His electronics package is still there, behind the wall acoustic treatment.

Good luck,

day 5

Began with more site photography.

At 12 noon we met Bill McGraw of the detroit free press which is Detroit's largest newspaper.

Bill is interested in our fascination with the city and asked for a mini tour. we decide to visit United Sound, Golden World, Tera Shirma and 20 Grand.

As we toured the sites, Bill was given a running commentary of these locations and a brief history of the northern soul scene. Together with photographer Mandy, they became entranced with the scene and genuinely declared it to be one of their most interesting stories. will the editor think likewise? have to wait and see.

Next we take Harry W's offer of a trip to the Roostertial in the company of Paul Barker. Paul showed us some rare photographs from Roostertail's heyday and took us on a tour of the entire building.

Mandy the photographer is so intrigues she tags along and takes hundreds of pics.

Next we stop by honest?john's and hook up with smitty who worked at Magic City on Grand River. he gives me some old 45's!

Finally at 9pm we take up Ed Wolfrum's offer to visit his studio in Royal Oak. Ed immediately blows us away when he produces lacquers and photos from Golden World. Also photos from Tera Shirma and United Sound.

Music from the era follows and at 1 am we stagger into the cold night air completely overwhelmed. Ed thanks a million.

Day 6

WE met up with Marilyn Bond at Jamie Coe's place at Plymouth and Farmington Road. Marilyn very kindly directed us to Gino Washington's place on Grand River where we were shown a recent video of
Gino performing live....Gino can still crack it and it was a pleasure to hear 'Puppet on a string".

WE then returned to Jamie Coe's for a long disussion about the old days. Marilyn's history is quite astonishing...and we were priveleged to see photo albums.

Next we went up to visit Popcorn. I showed him the Tera Shirma Story and gave him a number of e-mails which he received from all over the world. Popcorn was visibly moved when he saw the detail. He sends his regards to everyone.

Willie Kendricks was next on the visiting
list. Willie is a really nice guy. He recalled his days in Detroit and Chicago. Fascinating!

In the evening we went to Bomac's with Vickie Alexander who recently joined the forum. Vickie is an extremely interesting lady who has a vast collection of albums, musical instruments and audio technology old and new.

Vickie has been on tour with a number of groups and is a regular musician at thee club. She mesmerises us with her bari sax.

A surprise visitor to Bomac's was Brian Wilson who is U.K.'s Energy Minister. He was also surprised when I shouted his name across the room. In Detroit for the G8 meeting, we had a right old fashioned Glasgow discussion with him. A really down to earth guy.

Home at 1am and 650 miles on the clock to date.

Hi David.

Talk about your whirlwind tours! Be aware that, for a while, the Free Press has Bill McGraw working on the Red Wings and Pistons (Detroit's professional hockey and basketball teams, both of whom are presently in the playoffs), since these are huge local stories right now. But I talked to him today, and he sounds extremely interested in doing a story, but it may be a week or two. The paper's website is at freep.com, so you'll presumably be able to see the article there when it appears.

Day 7

Began with another visit to Lowell's. This time to educate me further on the use of Adobe Photoshop.

It is my objective to speed up the uploading of webisodes to the site.

At 3 pm I bump into Willie Kendricks again. This time outside the Fisher Building on West Grand Blvd...only in Detroit!

After getting lost in the evening (!), we meet up with Loveuali, James 'Pete' Crawford of the Magnetics, Arthur Walton of the Distants and Cyril Clarke of the Majestics. Cyril has a basement studio and we hang out there to hear about the old days. Cyril also has a jukebox which contains the Younghearts, Jimmy Soul Clark and the Fantastic 4. What a great evening!

Day 8

At 10am we arrived at the home of Detroit legend, Dennis Coffey.

We instantly notice the myriad of awards on display throughout his house.

Dennis then showed us the template for his new book which will be issued by Bee Cool next month. It looks a great read contains many unique photographs.

We were also priveleged to a hear live recording of Dennis, Melvin Davis and Lyman Woodard playing the Frolic Show Bar in 1967. Track one was a jazz funk number which sounded absolutely sensational.

Next we called in at Bettye Lavette who had just returned from her tour in Europe. She told us that it was a great success and that France in particular had been very rewarding.

It was now Saturday evening and George Katzakis had invited us to the Clawson Inn. There we had a great evening in the company of Dennis Coffey; Gil Bridges of Rare Earth and The Sunliners; Guy Gillis of The Sunlines; Nick Palise who worked with many including Mickey Denton and Tommy Good; Ed Gandolfo of the Paragons; Millie of radio and forum fame; and Millie's friend Marge.

Gil made a rare appearance on stage without Rare Earth; and was joined by Nick, George and Dennis. What a great evening, thanks to everyone for making us so welcome.

Ralph Terrana is mentioned on more than one occasion and is praised for an accurate portrayal of the Tera Shirma Story. The ladies recall him too....but I won't go into that :-))

Hello Everyone on the Soulful Detriot Forum.
David's trip makes for fascinating reading and the free press article is really interesting too. I had no idea how little Detroiters knew about their fantastic musical heritage, compare it to Memphis where evryone is proud to know a soul singer or writer and youve got a very differnt story. Memphis has turned its musical heritage into a focus for economic regeneration - I'm currently looking at their Film and TV Commission Production Guide - and music is the anchor for all that goes on there.

I am visiting US with my writer/director later in May to do some background research for a film script we are working on - about 2 English Soul fans in the 70's who go insearch of their hero - an elusive and mostly forgotten Soul singer. The story will begin UK and go to Detriot and Memphis. Any help with the research would be greatfully recieved - it is a very exciting project and many "Northern Soul" fans and DJs have been fabulous - telling us their stories, now we want to meet some of the guys who created the music. I would love to meet with Popcorn and Dennis Coffey, Betteye et al! We've got some of your Southern counterparts set up - but we dont want them to hog the limelight do we!!!

We know!! WE have been working on the idea for a year now, talking to northern DJs and Fans here in UK.

I am a little bit young to have been on the original Northern Soul scene, but only just - more mature friends of mine, whose parents allowed them would go the cleethorpes and wigan etc from my home-town Market Harbrough which is just on the southern edge of the "Northern Soul" map -- still popular hits like Band of Gold, Needle in A Haystack and all the Mowtown were floorfillers at the local disco "Soul Survivors".

I've been going to some Northern and cross-over nights in London though. I like a bit of Southern Soul too and I'm a bit of a funkateer when it comes down to it. Its all such great music.

I've just put a new subject on the forum -"Soul Screenplay" so anyone who wants to contribute some anecdotes then please post them on that!

I'm new to forum - chatting!! - used to the old methods like the phone!

Liza, you should use David and Harry for your main characters. They have star quality because they are the *genuine* item and as you can see from this site, they know the subject cold. [Do I get to be the agent, do I, do I? :)]

I mean, can you imagine some motown era legend answering his or her door in Detroit and encountering this Laurel and Hardy-esque pair standing there, coming at you in thick Scottish accent? What a hoot they are. No wonder they all end up lovin' them.

For the rest of you, here is the direct link to the article

And David is that really orange juice you are drinking?? Or is it a giant screwdriver?

Day 9

Today is our final day and it's always nice to finish off with someone special. That someone special is George McGregor, drummer at Golden World, Sidra and Tera Shirma.

George wrote and produced two of Northern Soul's greatest epics...'Hit and Run' and 'Mr Soul Satisfaction'.

During our two hour discussion George recalls the making of these wonderful records. He also looks back at the sixties with pleasure and pain. Like so many of his contemporaries he wishes he had been a bit more worldly wise. They all learned the hard way.

Finally, on our way back to the airport we meet up with fellow forumer, Joe Moorehouse. I had been impressed with Joe's input to the forum and wes are not disappointed when he pulls out some great memorabilia.

The clock is ticking away however and we have to zoom along the highway to the Metropolitan Airport.

The CD player beats out 'You only live twice' by Lorraine Chandler...a fitting end to another great trip to the magic city...DETROIT, MICHIGAN.

David,

Looking forward to your proposed visit to Philly.
I will be the tour guide and show you all of the landmarks of the Philly experience both past and present. Like Detroit, Philly has a wealth of recording history with a plethora of small labels
and some great people to meet.( Hurry while they are still with us!!)
Weldon is still dealing with the passing of his mum, and he will be back on shortly, and he says hi.

In reply to IanW - the "Backstreets" inst was found on an acetate by I believe Guy Hennigan and Gilly on one of their mid-80's record hunting trips - I think it came from Popcorn Wylie. You're right that it is near enough the inst take of the released vocal cut with possibly beefed up brass, and it used to sound AWESOME echoing around the hall at the Stafford all-nighters many moons ago!!!
Wonder if it's nestling in the Motown vaults anywhere as it's long overdue a release IMO.

Flynny!

Bobby

That's a date.

I also have a deep interest in Philadelphia as you already know.

I'll keep in touch. but it should be end of April 2003. Hope that will be ok.

Maybe you can come with us to Detroit thereafter where I plan to meet the former owner of the famous Tera Shirma Recording Studios!

Dave, re. Backstreet. You're right, it was Guy featured on Mr. Searling's show. I think he said they acquired it from a Motown engineer - I wonder if he has featured on this forum? And, if so, has he any more instrumental tracks like that one?

Ian
