Does anyone know who played bass on the original 1966 version of Tears Of A Clown and the 1970 rerelease?
The 1970's single version besides having new drums overdubbed on it sounds like it also has a new bassline on it. The stereo mix however has the new drums (and you can still here Benny!) but still keeps the original bass line.
Dr Licks says in the Miracles 35th anniversary Box set that it was Bob Babbit playing on Tears Of a Clown but does he mean the original or the 1970's single mix?
To add to the confusion, I remember reading somewhere that that it was Tony Newton playing on the 1966 version!!
Any thoughts Mr Babbitt?
Cheers
Paul

There are two versions of the song but both were cut in 1966, at the same session. Hey Babbit - that is you, right?

I was never aware of anything being changed for the later release. This was "forced" by EMI in England releasing the old song as a single.
I may have even played a part in the process because while I was on a vacation in London, I told our English label manager about how the Motown QC process worked and that one by-product was that there is a lot of really great stuff that had never been released as a single simply because it didn't happen to be the very best we had at the time.

HEY GUYS....IN THE ARTICLE THAT I POSTED ON MY ORIGINAL BOB BABBITT THREAD TITLED "WHO'S PLAYING BASS"........"TEARS OF A CLOWN " WAS ONE OF THE SONGS THAT I TALKED ABOUT.......I HAD ONLY RECORDED A FEW SESSIONS FOR SMOKEY AND I DEFINITELY REMEMBER RECORDING "TEARS OF A CLOWN".....
SOMEONE ON THE FORUM ASKED ME THE QUESTION........
"I READ ON YOUR RESUME THAT YOU PLAYED ON "TEARS OF A CLOWN" BUT I ALSO READ INFORMATION FOR THIS SONG SOMEWHERE?(THE ALL MUSIC GUIDE?) THAT JAMERSON WAS LISTED AS THE BASS PLAYER.........
TO FIND OUT WHAT MAY CAUSE THIS TO HAPPEN AS WELL AS OTHER SITUATIONS, I SUGGEST THAT YOU READ THAT ARTICLE..SO FAR THE ARTICLE HAS APPEARED IN A ENGLISH MAGAZINE, SOULFUL KINDA MUSIC..ISSUE 49...
AND BASS PLAYER MAGAZINE IS CONSIDERING PUTTING IT IN ONE OF THEIR UP COMING ISSUES..............BOB BABBITT
