I am looking for a copy of "Black & Blue" by the Gigolos, circa: early 1960's. Anyone have a copy and would drop it on a CD. Maybe swap for some early soul found on Detroit radio??

Hey Count,
you mentioned Edgewater....it was there I first heard the Wurltzer electric piano coming over the loudspeakers playing records. Ray Charles' What'd I Say. I said to the guys I was with " What the hell is that?? " Did some investigating and new I had to have one. I was the second guy in the band circuit to get the Wurlitzer. The first, I believe, goes to the Popoff brother who had one in the late, great Royaltones.

I can't believe you were second to get the Wurlitzer...Speaking of the Royaltones, I just listened to "See Saw"/"Poor Boy" about an hour ago! You've always known I live in the past! Yes, the past...you know where you've been, but you don't know where you're going...ah, yes, the past! Speaking of the past, what's new with "The Roaring of the Room"???

Millie,

I actually did record something several years ago based on " The Roaring Of The Room ". It became very wierd and meandered into various styles. All in all I wasn't very happy with it. Maybe some day I'll re-work it and have Elina take a shot at it. Hmmmm....

Count,

I've owned two Fender Rhodes. As far as durabilty, they were a giant step up from the Wurltzers, but they had a terrible action and were tedious to play at times. You had to completely re-orient your touch to play a Rhodes. I was fortunate enough to have lunch with Harold Rhodes one day and discuss with him the pianos limitations regarding touch. The Wurlitzer had a ligitimit piano action, therefore the touch was authentic. The main problem with the Wurlitzer was breaking reeds. All in all though these two pianos were great breakthroughs for us keyboard players, as archaic as they may seem today.

So Gil has a new babe huh? If you see him, tell him I said to be careful...he's getting older now.

Okay guys, time to clear a few things up again. Dennis (of the Gigolos) played sax on "Black & Blue". No,Steve (Count),I did NOT copy the cd from an album. If there ever was one,it must have been a bootleg, because Jamie never had a legit one out. That's why I licensed everything & put out the CD. "Black & Blue" was recorded by several people. It was a very popular song at the time. When I put out the CD,we even had t-shirts made up. We had a ball selling them. Jamie is well-known for donating a lot of money to charity. He's a nice guy that way.

Marilyn, the album I gave to Jamie was no bootleg.Even the picture of Jamie on the cover of the CD is from that album of Jamie Coe & The Gigolos,Other side of album was The Phantom(Nick Tood).. Next time you talk to Jamie ask him about the album i gave him for his birthday.Even the scratchie parts from the album on some of the songs appear in the CD>I even lent a other copy of that album to Tom Knight, which i never got back from him along with 21 other records i lent Tom.. Thats why he had a huge collection, he would borrow and never return....Steve The Count.

BLACK AND BLUE WAS RECORDED BY THE GIGOLOS IN THE YEAR OF 1959. THE BAND CONSISTED OF
BO SAVICH--- DRUMS
GRANT SMITH--- BASS
JACK RAINWATER--- GUITAR
DAVID KOVARIK--- LEAD TENOR
VIC OLSON SECOND TENOR
IT WAS RECORDED I THINK ON TOP DOG.
I STARTED WITH THE GIGOLOS IN 1959 AND STAYED FOR ONE YEAR TO GO PLAY IN NEW YORK CITY WITH A SHOW GROUP.I REJOINED THE GIGOLOS IN THE YEAR OF 1963 UNTIL 1971, SOME OF THE BARS WE PLAYED WERE ROSE BAR, THE MILITARY INN,KING ARTHURS,GAY HAVEN,WEST FORT TAVERN,DUN ROVEN,WEST SIDE SIX,FUNNY FARM, SIP AND CHAT,POMPEI,WHEN I LEFT TO PLAY WITH TERRY AND THE TOPICS. AT THE SIDE DOOR LOUNGE ON TELEGRAPH ROAD.AS FAR AS KNOW THE ONLY REMAING COPY OF BLACK AND BLUE ( 45 ) IS OWNED BY JACK RAINWATER.I HAVE THE POSTER OF THE ORIGINAL GIGOLOS TAKEN AT THE FUNNY FARM, BUT THAT HAS RAY HOGAN ON DRUMS.I WOULDNT HAVE THOUGHT YOU WOULD HAVE REMEMBERED THE DYNA TONES BABBIT. NICE HEARING FROM YOU MAN. WHATS UP WITH YOU???

Hi David K and Babbit,
I thought that the Top Dog label dated from the mid-late 60s. Were you (DK) recording for Artie Fields?
The only Dynatones 45 I know is called "The Fyfe Piper" (sp?) which, from memory, was on the HBR label. It's dominated by a flute and I haven't heard it in donkey's years. A great record.

Hey, David Kovarick, How,s your brother Quanter? I think you have your dates wrong as in the spring of 1960 I joined you Jack Rainwater,&Jimmy Van in Gary Ind. then we played in Massena,N.Y.Washington D.C. under the Gigalos name and THEN we went to Rose,s to join Jamie at that time Bo was still with Johnny &the Hurricanes although afew weeks later we switched places. To this day I still think he got the better end of the deal in the long run,but I did get to meet a lot of cool people in the Hurricanes I still love the sound of your sax playing no matter how many years go by. Hope your doing well.Do you mean the time before Bo went with the Hurricanes, that all this took place? Lynn P.S. The Dynatones "The fife piper" originally came out on St.Clair Records (#117) before going to HBR (#494). They are also slightly different versions, with the local copy being harder, if one can use that term when there's a flute in the track?! ;-)

Hi Dave!
It's been years...how are you? Sorry you missed Steve Fischer when he was in town last weekend. He hadn't played in 15 years, didn't bring his sax, but he did bring a reed and mouthpiece, so he was able to play George's sax! Didn't miss a beat! What part of Florida do you live in? Steve's in Miami, and owns a gunsmithing shop. You two should get together...he'd love to see you. I've got his phone numbers if you want them. Let me know.

Some more pictures at Jamies, the last year George (Terry) Sheehan was in Detroit, Jamie demanded me and Terry to perform. Here are the two Counts together. Me on drums...Steve the Count/George singing, the crowd loved it as they always loved George's performance and his personality. He is a lovable person that is missed by all. George had more friends than this forum could ever hold.
Steve the Count

First picture is Terry and the Topics at the side door. If you ever missed them there, you missed one of a kind Detroit sound.

Saw Jerry Schiapetta in an old commercial the other day...he looks so old! Oh..he is old!!!!! Take care.

Dear Dave...
Can't wait to see you and Pam on the 6th. I am sooo glad that you are playing again... there's nothing like a solo on your sax during a great ballad. Only a singer can remember how you can compliment a voice on a ballad. Miss you much.

Hi Dave,I just had a new computer built by my computer teacher. My daughter let us use her old one at christmas.I felt like the last guy on the block to get a telephone.I knew I needed lessons when my 10 year old grandson laughed at me because I didn't know how to turn it on.I,m still in Dearborn.I,m retired from Northwest Airlines (3 years ago)I,ve been playing till alittle over a year ago.For the last thirty years I'd get home from a gig at 2:30 a.m.&get up at 4:00 am usually on fri, sat,&sun go to work.WHAT A DRAG!! Now that I'm retired, I'm not playing in a group at the moment.Oh,the injustice of it all.I,m glad you &Quanner are doing well.I hope to see you soon,we have a lot of (talking about use to be} to do.Remember at Roses bar, when to get aJohn Lee Hooker Boogie Chillin sound, Jack Rainwater would crank his amp up full blast and we would throw all the covers on the speaker. It got that sound, but I'm not sure how often Jack had to replace his speakers!!! Your long lost pal,Lynn

Dave, there is no way in hell you could ever lose the touch, when you have the finest horn players around like yourself George"The Kat",Steve Fisher,Gil Bridges, its impossible. It don't matter how long you been away from it,whats touching is the fact David Kovarik is blowing that horn again, and thats what makes it the way we all remember, just seeing you with that horn in your hand is saying it all,and that sweet sound will speak for itself.I agree with Pam,your like a old bottle of wine,it gets better with age...HHHHUUUMMMM,I have a bottle of unopened Cadillac Club Nature Boy,I wonder how good this will be..We will make Jack Barr take the first pull to find out..Man Dave,we got to get together and talk some good old shit and fun.was your horn manufactured in Pakistan,by a Pakistan watch maker,it is true, over 40 years to develope the fine tone of the David Kovarik fine toned horn, registered with lords of lundon and guarded by 15 pinkertonmen everynite in the vaults.(A line from Lee Alan) Steve "The Count" P.S.when we do this reunion in Dec.I hope I will be invited to set in also,we will make Vic,George Sheehan,Bo Savitch, and everyone else in ROCK@ROLL HEAVEN proud of us all.

Hey dave, lets get together somenite soon at Jamies. We can sit and B.S. about all the good ol times and crazy days we lived(I still do).Jack and Joyce are always at Jamies Saturday nites. But he does know about the 6th. and they are going to be there,we will probably come together....Speaking of crazy times,I'am barred from the ladies restroom at Jamies by Jamie himself. He told me I'am not allowed in there anymore because I walked in and mooned the girls.I tried to explain that Jack Barr bet me 100.00 dollars that I would'nt do it.Anyhow, when Jamie went back on stage to sing,I danced with Joyce and mooned Jamie,he about shit and brought Lisa up to finish the set,he was laughing so much he couldn't finish the set.So as you can see we still have some good old fashion fun and crazy times. One nite I brought a can of blue spray paint to Jamies with me and was gonna have Jack spray my ass with it,and then when I asked Jamie to do Blue Moon,he said noway,I dont trust you,so it never happened(not yet anyhow) Keep in touch.P.S.I dont know how my wife puts up with me either after all these yrs..She dont go out much but I'am always out,but I always tell her i'll be home by dark30.We have a very unusual marrage problem,we get along. See ya,Steve "the Count"
