The 20 Grand article reminded me of Chuck's relative demise after he signed with Motown (When was that exactly?). I wonder if this was by accident or design; certainly the songs he recorded at Hitsville never matched the rich quality of his Wand recordings (IMO).

Me and you are gonna have to agree to disagree, I am afraid. I loved all his stuff on Motown......
The song "Shame on you"..was that a song he recorded on Scepter/Wand (as well as at Hitsville USA)

I'm afraid that I'm with Graham on this one. There's nothing at all wrong with Chuck's Motown cuts, but I feel they're more "Motown" than "Chuck". I personally prefer his New York material... JMHO, of course.

Ralph mentioned in the TS story that Chuck visited the studio - I wonder if "Good Things Come To Those Who Wait" was recorded there?

Graham,
Wish I could help you here but I can't even remember who the producer was that brought him in. I would imagine this was in 1966 if that helps any.

Ralph - I'm sure someone here on the forum has a copy of this 45 - who's credited on the label?
John - I haven't heard all of Chuck's Motown recordings (hangs head in shame), so maybe I'm being a little unfair. I was thinking of "Girls, Girls, Girls" - which I think was his biggest Motown "hit" - but to me it sounds clumsy when compared to songs like "Two Stupid Feet" and "Chains Of Love."
I suspect Chuck joined Motown shortly after his appearance at the 20 Grand - Do you know when he actually signed?

Chuck started his stint with Motown in August 1967...and worked with all the big names...Smokey was his big friend and worked on Girls Girls Girls and The Man In You...remember Graham that that was a double sided promoted 45.
Good Things Come To Those That Wait was wrriten by JJ Barnes, C Sims and D Litwin.....someone else has done this song...

Willie Hatcher - if memory serves me correctly!

Yes, it was Willie Hatcher on Columbia.
Best,

Speaking up in support of Graham :-)
Chuck's Wand material includes some of the finest recordings ever made IMO.
I do hope he (Chuck not Graham!)teams up with Maxine Brown over in the UK sooner rather than later.......hopefully at the Kent/Ace anniversary bash later this year!
There's a scan of a Japanese 7" sleeve for Chuck & Maxine's "C.C.Rider" on my site...worth a look -

-p.s. Will Hatcher - what's the flipside to his Wheelsville 45 #001 "You haven't seen nothing"?
-p.p.s. Sorry for talking NYC soul and not Detroit! ;-)

Valerie Simpson did a LOT of background sessions for Scepter/Wand.

You can hear her on some things too....You're In Love by Maxine Brown.....
I would have liked to have seen Chuck Jackson with Yvonne Fair.......two faces with enough power to knock out Cassius Clay in the first round!

Hi David F; fancy seeing you here! LOL.
I spoke to Will Hatcher recently and will meet him when I go to Detroit in September. I'll post you the flip title to his Wheelsville 45 once I get home; I can't recall it at the moment. It's age.
Cheers, Graham

Thank you, squire!
I assume you are aware that it has been bootlegged on a look-a-like label, although for which scene I'm unsure.

No David, I didn't know that. But I assume the original must be worth something - how much?
Graham
By David Flynn (213.1.128.146 - 213.1.128.146) on Thursday, May 09, 2002 - 05:48 pm: |
A couple of hundred UK pounds sterling.
The bootleg is on thiner more modern in appearnace vinyl, and the label print isn't as "sharp".
David
-p.s. Anyone discovered what Wheelsville #104 is yet?
By Ian W (62.6.65.48 - 62.6.65.48) on Friday, May 10, 2002 - 09:56 pm: |
David, I have listed #104 as:
Debora Healey - Don't Do Nothing I Wouldn't Do/Can't Erase My Old Love's Face
I've got the W-V 001 Will Hatcher record. Hopefully it's not a boot - the label is a light blue. The label has also 7054-33A but the run-out has AR-8155-1 which is a bit odd!
By David Flynn (213.1.132.254 - 213.1.132.254) on Monday, May 13, 2002 - 11:01 am: |
Ooops, I meant to type #105, not #104!
