Hi All

I was wondering if anyone knows if James Jamerson played on any if the Hot Wax or Invictus sessions?

I did e-mail Bob Lee with suggestions for his Jamerson site suggesting that Jamerson did play on the Hot Wax & Invictus sessions although I was wrong about Band Of Gold (sorry Mr Babbitt. Obviously I didn't listen carefully enough!!)

I always knew that the some of the Motown cats played on those sessions and it was nice to have it confirmed here by those who actually did.

Tracks that spring to mind that sound like Jamerson to me are "Girls it Ain't Easy" by Honey Cone, "Westbound No.9" by Flaming Ember,"One Man's Leftovers" by 100 Proof and "She's Not Just Another Woman" by 100 Proof & the 8th Day.

Intrestingly the version of She's Not Just Another Woman by the 8th Day that I have on CD is the 100 Proof version exept in mono!! I wonder if this was a mistake?

Any way thats enough of my ramblings.

Cheers

Paul

Hi Paul, I played on most of those sessions and Jamerson wasn't on any that I did. Motown gave me a hard time about doing those sessions, but there was nothing they could do about it because I was never into an exclusive agreement with Motown. They were watching HDH sessions pretty close. I know Bob Babbit played on some and a bass player named Peanut played on some.

The Silent Majority also did "Something New About You" on Hot Wax but it is like almost impossible to find....

Sequel/Sanctuary put it out on one of their compliations...record scratches and all!

Bradburger...in my book, you can ramble on about Hot Wax and Invictus for as long as you like. Incidentally, according to discographies that were put out in UK mags at the time, a whole load of that stuff was recorded at Tera Shirma studios....

I DO REMEMBER ONE SESSION FOR HDH THAT JAMERSON AND I BOTH WERE ON.......JAMERSON HAD AN 8 STRING BASS (I THINK IT WAS A HAGSTROM?)BUT DENNIS COFFEY WAS RIGHT IN SAYING THAT BECAUSE OF HIS SIGNING OF AN EXCLUSIVE CONTRACT WITH MOTOWN THAT THEY HAD THEIR EYE'S AND THEIR SPY'S ON HIM AROUND THE CLOCK.......I HAD MENTIONED IN A EARLIER POSTING THAT I THOUGHT ALONG WITH MYSELF THAT HDH ALSO USED TONY NEWTON BUT DENNIS ALSO MENTIONED PEANUT.......BOB BABBITT

Hi all. Checking thru some old sessions details I noticed that James J. was recording at Thelma in '63 as part of the Magnificent 7 . The seven being - Charles Hooks (Trumpet). Eli Fountain (Alto Sax). Joe Hunter (Piano}. Don Davis (Guitar). Eddie Willis (gtr). Uriel Jones (Drums) and James Jamerson (Fender Bass). Amidst this tangled web I am intending to try to show a connection between Calvin Frazier and the `Joe Hunter` era of musicians via the great T. J. Fowler. Will post when ready, but any bits of info would be greatly received. Keith.

Keith, this was originally recorded for Johnnie Mae Matthews and released on her Northern label - credited to Don Davis and His Groovers (great name!). It was re-released on Thelma.

Dennis, Bob thanks for your input. I should imagine that Jamerson and the rest of you guys were being watched like a hawk!

Some of the musicians got paid a salary in addition to union scale for their sessions if they agreed to not record for anybody else. I understood that this was something like an extra $500 a week.

I was told straight from the horses mouth that it was 100 dollars a week!!!!
