The following are songs taken from the Jobete catalogue, Jan 1959 - March 1967. Some of these may have been written by George, Grady Thomas, Clarence "Fuzzy" Haskins, Sidney Barnes, et al while they were signed to Motown's New York office; or they could have been written while they were at Golden World. Motown bought all Myto (Golden World) published songs in September 1966.
The Parliaments Golden World 45 "Heart Trouble" was listed, but I don't know if any of these others also made onto vinyl. Any info/comments would be great.

A Lover's Hayride - G Kerr, S Barnes
A Love So Fine - G Kerr, S Barnes, The Tokens
A Small Part Of You - G Clinton, E Harris, C Haskins
Accidental Love - G Clinton
Be On Your Way - G Clinton

There's quiet a few! I wonder if they were recorded and are in the vaults somewhere. Mmmm...

Alright Graham !!, I mean ALRIGHT GRAHAM !!!! what a great list. A million Thank-a-roos Dawg, that's great info.

"Accidental Love" was recorded by fellow barber Roy Handy and came out on ther Laurie Label in '63. "What Did We Do" was the flip and is credited as Roy Handy and the Parlets. There were Parlets back in '63!!

"You Won't Say Nothing" is the Vivian "Tawala" Lewis (who is also the mother of George's son Tracey) 45 that came out on Marton in '63. "If You Can Stand Me" was the flip side

"I Misjudged You" was recorded by the Parliaments for Motown's V.I.P. label but went unreleased. Parliament re-cut it for their Chocolate City LP in '75 that came out on Casablanca

"One Girl Too Many" was recorded by Norma Jenkins and came out on George Kerr's Kerr label in '73

"I Say Yeah" was done on The Pets in '65 and "West Side Party" was the flip

I was told that Roy Handy recorded another song for the ill-fated Funkadelic label that released only one 45 in 1968 (Rose Williams of Hot Buttered Soul's great Motown sounding "Whatever Makes My Baby Feel Good"). Wonder which song it was that Roy recorded.

"I'm Never Going to Tell" Hmmmm ... Funkadelic & Phillipe Wynne both recorded a great northern soul sounding song song entitled "I'm Never Gonna Tell it". Given Clinton's re-rehash past, I'm thinking they're the same .. I'll Bet You.

"A Love So Fine" may (I said may) have been recorded by the Tokens who were the vocal group that George Kerr & Sidney Barnes were in together while at Jobete NY.

One tiny point to add - A LOVE SO FINE was cut by the Chiffons on Laurie 3195.
(Yes, it is the same song - the writers credit is exactly the same.)

Forgive me for saying this - I always thought the Tokens were a white group: Jay Siegel, Hank Medress, Phil & Mitch Margo. Plus, I believe they started out along with Carole King, Neil Sedaka and Neil Diamond - all destined for the Brill Building and greater success as artists. Any comments??

Top of pageBottom of page   By Rich (162.33.235.183 - 162.33.235.183) on Friday, April 12, 2002 - 02:36 pm:

Well let me think Ritchie, maybe the Tokens isn't right. Clinton, George Kerr, JJ Jackson & Sid Barnes did work outta the Brill building in '63. I've checked it was the Sereneders that was Sid & Kerr's group. I don't know why I trust my memory. Norma Jenkins was in a group known as the Dolls and they recorded for Maltese Records in the early 60's but I don't know of any songs they recorded.

My understanding is that GC worked for Raynoma during part of '63, so the first Parliaments audition was before that possibly in '62. By '65 GC was commuting to Detroit and working for Ed Wingate with Mike Terry & Sidney Barnes. I take known facts and fill in the missing with best guesses, no first hand knowledge.

I guess we're possibly both "right". The Tokens began as a loose-knit kind of recording outfit - singers and songwriters, led by Jay Siegel and Hank Medress. The "official" group was possibly created as an entity to put faces to the name, (after the hit The Lion Sleeps Tonight...?) but in the studio, there may well have been others involved - including SB and GC. (I suspect that the "Tokens" writer credit equates to "Siegel/Medress")

A little off-topic but might help..???

The Tokens discovered the Chiffons and also produced their singles as well (Bright Tunes Productions was the Tokens' company; B.T. Puppy records was the off-shoot of the production company).

So there may be a connection here?

Hi Mark

As far as I was aware, the Chiffons - one of my favourite girl-groups - were discovered by Ronnie mack, who went on to manage them. He handed production over to Bright Tunes (aka The Tokens), and the names Margo/Medress/Siegel (and variations) loom large in the Chiffons songbook. Exactly what this has to do with George Clinton, I can't say, but the girls DID make some damn-fine records!

'Love On A Lease Plan' was auctioned not too long ago by John Manship on a Golden World acetate and came out on a Goldmine cd. It was attributed to Johnnie Taylor.

Sorry John, it's too tear-jerking to hear the final bid, so I never find out. He also had the Oma Heard 'My Lonely Heart' in VIP for auction. Is this rare? When I find a new record, I add it to the database along with any pricing I find. I have £15 marked alongside Oma Heard. I suppose some records aren't considered rare until they are - if that makes any sense! (It didn't to me)!

"One Girl Too Many" was also released on Maltese -recorded by The Perigents (who were they?). It actualy has Jobete Pub on the label and I guess it's from around 1966 - 67.
I have a couple of Kim Weston EPs (UK Tamla Motown)- one of which includes "A Little More Love" - one of my favorite Motown songs.

Ahh, so the version of "One Girl Too Many" that George Kerr did on Norma Jenkins was a re-make. Good lookin' out Graham. The only hit I know of that Norma Jenkins ever had was "Gimme Some (of Your Love)" in 1976 on the Desert Moon label. Although, I believe she was active in the biz & singing back-up for a number of years because I remember seeing her credited on some P-Funk related release but I can't remember what it was. I'm thinking it was in the early 80's. I don't know much about the Maltese label.

According to George Kerr Maltese was owned by Bud Grandhoff (my spelling) and was based in New Jersey .... Norma Jenkins was used to demo many of the Kerr-Barnes NY songs including the Motown version of 'Try Love (one more time)', which is unreleased ... George co-wrote 'I have faith in you' but put his wife's name on the credit due to some contractual situation .. without looking at the 45 I want to say her surname was Green but stand to be corrected ... he wrote the 'Airplane somg' as a direct result of a bad flight ... 'This is our day' by the Dolls on Maltese was co-written by Alice Ossman ..Miss Ray's sister ... and she had never heard the song until I sent her a copy some years ago

That's funny about Ronnie Mack managing the Chiffons. I never knew him to be into anything but singing rockabilly & pushing "roots" music. I managed him for about 3 years during the 80s,when I lived in Cal. His band backed up a lot of oldies artists for big shows, plus he and James Intveld sang together at many local clubs. He also opened for Ricky Nelson a lot. I have great photos of him & James.

The song "I Misjudged You" was one of the tunes recorded for Motown by the Parliaments around '64, for release on the V.I.P. label but never came out. The song was written by George Clinton, Fuzzy Haskins (parliament vocalist) & Ernie Harris (GC's barbershop partner). The song was eventually re-recorded and released on Parliament's Chocolate City album in '75. The song was published by Sea Agate Publishing. Not Myto (Ed Wingate/Golden World)or Groovesville (Don Davis/LeBaron Taylor/Revilot) or even GClinton's Malbiz. My guess is that this is one of his earlier tunes from his Newark NJ/NYC days. Anybody ever heard of Sea Agate Publishing?

re "love on a lease plan":

this was released as a bootleg 45 on a made-up label called joanne in detroit in the late eighties or early nineties. the b-side, just as good, is called "me and my baby." the (also made-up) singer's name is listed as johnny burke (i think that's where the inaccurate "solomon burke" writing credit comes from). according to andre williams, the singer on those tracks was johnny taylor.

I'm sure I've posted this before, but JT's Love On A Lease Plan is out on an official release - Goldmine's "Groovesville Review" Vol.2. The quality is not A1, suggesting it may have been remastered from an acetate, or a copy several generations down from the master. I've never heard of a "B-side" for this track. As the 45 was a boot, is it certain that it actually is Johnnie Taylor?

Teek was a St. Louis, MO label. I haven't quite figured out the Detroit connection, though. And wot a classic that one is....

When the Velvelettes appeared at Cleethorpes, me and Cal thought that "These Things" would be the song to repeat. However, "Lonely Lonely Girl Am I" received a HUGE response as the second song of their performance. Ady asked for this song to be the encore and the crowd went WILD. All very emotional it was for me, to see SO MANY people appreciating my favourite ladies. I wish you had been there to see it all
