i will be visiting popcorn shortly and think it would be a nice idea if i took him along some e-mails from the forum.

he doesn't get out much these days due to severe athritic problems and i know something like this would give him a lift.

if you knew popcorn personally or if you have ever enjoyed his wonderful music as a northern soul fan, drop me an e-mail at david@soulfuldetroit.com, and i will see that he gets it.

let's set a target of 20 e-mails, so get typing! please.

I first became aware of him on my Golden World stuff and Platters stuff. I was listening to Jamerson, I think on 'With this ring' yesterday afternoon, for my 'run of the mill Thursday afternoon Funk Brothers Bass guitar lesson'! That beginning octave - I just love it - and listen to the next bit just as the verse comes in. I remember my mate telling me in 1974, that he had heard a great record on the radio called 'With this ring'. He went straight to the record shop and ordered it! I was rather jealous that he had heard it first, so I said, Yeah...not bad! Here I am 25 years later playing it on CD and working out how the bass line is constructed and how I missed the fact, that for all these years, Funks were playing on the track!

I've loved those sixties Platters sides as long as I've known them. I used to have :o( a copy of a great Stateside album called Sweet Sweet Lovin' (ca. 1968) which went into that Bermuda Triangle of lost records that I'm sure we're all familiar with. I have to ask this... Doesn't it ring a bell?

Now I have a pretty early ? CD (1986) - the Platters' 20 Greatest Hits, pressed in Japan, would you believe...? It's great music but obviously released before "digital remastering" was invented. Just listen to all those scratches!
