No Graham,
It's Millie Bostick. She was aways active in the Detroit music scene and dealt with a lot of musicians and radio personalities.

Bobby Eli and I were talking about him on the phone the other day and Bobby asked me this question. I said I would ASK MILLIE.

Yes, John - we're seriously into great unknowns there...

I only know three of the names, and not in any Motor City context (OK, five if you count the Crescendos and the Diamonds.) I wonder if it WAS the 1950s Diamonds - the kings of the cover version. They were from Canada, if memory serves correctly - maybe they slipped over the border..?

When Steve comes to town please bring him to the Clawson and make sure he brings his horn, we haven't heard him in years. If we have enough notice we might be able to have Dave Kovarik and Nick Palise and have a good time. I will look forward to a longer conversation the next time I see you too.

I remember one night at the Cliche we had Fred Saxon, Gil Bridges, Nick Palise, Steve Fisher and Buddy Wilde together on stage. It was something. Hi David!
As soon as I get a hold of all the pics I'll certainly get them to you! They really are incredible. Unfortunately, a lot of the people in these pictures are no longer with us.
Someone asked about Liz Land...about 10 years ago when Ian Levine was working on a project in Detroit, I was at Masterpiece Sound (Sylvia Moy's recording studio), and had the privilege of watching/listening to Johnny Bristol and Liz record "Hang On In There Baby"...he is absolutely amazing..not only as a singer, but, obviously, as a songwriter too! I promise I'll get those photos!

Can you get Sylvia Moy to come onto this forum.....????

Johnny Bristol has a recording history that goes much deeper than the Supremes Someday We'll Be Together"...when he came to perform in London (also with him was Lenny Williams), he was talking about his post Tri Phi, solo Hitsville USA recordings.

Sylvia is a mean singer too.....her demo of What Have I Done To Myself (complete with coughing at the end!!) stands on it's own as one of the most poignant recordings I have ever heard.

I will do my best to alert everybody to Steve's arrival and I'm looking forward to seeing him. It's funny you should mention Sam Spano becaue Nick Palise and Dave Kovarik ran into him last Friday. I will see if they know how to get a hold of him. Sam is a drummer and at one time we worked together at Bobby's on Telegraph with the Zoom Band. I hope we see you soon.

Hey Millie, I'm hoping that you might be able to ask Armen about the delay of the Funkadelic "Toys" project and also to encourage you to ask about Funkadelics playing on various Westbound sessions done on other recordings groups. Another name I wanted to throw into the mix was King Errisson's Westbound LP. A lot of folks were hoping that with the lawsuits settled with GC, that Armen would be willing and able to have the Funkadelic catalog remastered and re-released possibly with demos, alternate takes and the like. Also, we've been fortunate to hear about Motown review at the 20 Grand or the Fox, any recollections of Funkadelic playing locally with other Detroit "rock" bands like MC5, Seger, Amboy Dukes, The Stooges, etc.

Hi Rich:
I spoke with Armen regarding the Funkadelic "Toy" project and he predicts a Fall release...it was supposed to be released this Spring but while they were compiling everything, they decided to add a few "tidbits" to make it more interesting which resulted in a later release date. Also, Armen also said there's a possibility of re-mastering the Funkadelic catalog which is out on CD now. Lastly, regarding the Funkadelic playing with other Detroit groups, he really doesn't remember, however, he thought they might have sat in at a live gig. I hope all the questions you asked in a previous posting have been answered!

Top of pageBottom of page   By Rich (162.33.234.231 - 162.33.234.231) on Monday, April 29, 2002 - 12:18 pm:

Yes that answers it, Thanks so very much Millie. I appreciate your taking the time to ask Armen. In general, the Westbound Funkadelic CDs that are out sound thin or tinny (especially free your mind) and could stand to be remastered and reissued with all the original artwork. Their Warner Brothers releases were remastered and released in Japan, I believe with a bonus track about a year ago.

Don't know if you remember me or not, but we met when I worked at Motown in the early 70's. We went out once...you took me to a recording session for Telma Hopkins and Joyce Wilson. Something having to do with "Bridge Over Troubled Water". Do you remember any of this?

I forgot to ask Millie, did GC show up at the sessions with Armen - LOL? If you have the chance to speak to Armen again (and you don't mind) I do have another question. Does Armen think that there are any other Funkadelic concerts on tape that will ever see the light of day. I know they did a TV show outta Cleveland once a year called That's Alright (or something like that) from around '69 - '72. The Live at the Meadowboook Pavillion (Rochester, MI) that came out on Westbound was a stunning surprise a few years back but, not their best in anyone's opinion including Armen's. Peace

Hey Rich!

No, GC didn't show up at the church!!! Can you imagine what would have happened if he had? Brrrr..I can't bear to think about that. Armen's in Los Angeles this week, and I won't be hearing from him until next week, so, I promise I'll ask him about the other Funkadelic CD's.

To Millie, George, Dave, Nick, and all my old friends in good old Detroit. I am excited and looking forward to seeing you all next month. My sax has seen better days, but I will bring my mouthpiece and am looking forward to a little jam-a-rama with my old Bud's on the horns. I just wish I had more time to practice, and something to practice on!!! :0) See you all soon, Steve Fischer

Steve,

We are also looking forward to you arrival. Don't worry, I'm sure everything will come back as soon as you get a horn in your hand. Make sure you bring a reed with that mouthpiece.

Hi Dennis!

We met at Motown on Woodward Avenue...it would have been either '71 or '72. I lived in Palmer Park at the time. I either worked on the 4th floor in sales/promotion, or later for Ralph Terrana on the 9th floor...don't feel too bad if you don't remember me, afterall, it's been a long time!

Didn't you move from the 5th floor to the 9th floor? Then again, maybe I was on the 9th floor when you were on the 3rd floor...that was just before I moved to the 7th floor! WHO CARES!

Dear Ralph:

We had fun working together...except when you kicked the furniture! Scared the hell out of me...! I can't believe you remember taking Marge and I to see our first "porno" flick...and what a flick it was!!!! How'd she do that??? lol Anyway, I love you and I am happy we've stayed friends all these years!

Millie,
Wait a minute! You're telling me I kicked furniture? Old even tempered Ralph??
This is really hard to believe!

I honestly don't remember the three of us at the porno flick. I remember you and I one time, and how when we emerged from the theatre we were al little fired up and even though our relationshiop has ALWAYS been platonic....That's right, John Lester....PLATONIC....I used to refer to Millie as the sister I never had....but we almost crossed THE line that night and then decided against it because it wasn't worth risking the close friendship we enjoyed.Personally, I think we blew it that night...LOL

Ralph,

There is no question that you blew it that night!

There is always time for friendship, but one should always take the bull by the horns, put their shoulder to the wheel, and put their best foot forward!

And don't forget to send the child support! Ask Robert Blake.

PLATONIC and WOMEN are two words that I would NOT consider appropriate to put in the same sentence where YOU are concerned.

Millie - you can tell the truth about Ralph now...you're among friends here, we won't tell anyone, go on tell us !!!

Ralph, you actually remind me of my dear younger brother who has only been married a "mere" twice with a possible third on the way! He reckons it's not HIS fault that he has been led astray a few times!

He can tell you about child support too - although I dare say he could probably still learn from you!!

I don't think it would be the best idea in the world for your brother to try and learn anything from me. Hell, I don't think it's a very good idea for ANYONE to try and learn anything from me.

Ralph-
I took David & Harry to lunch at Jamie's yesterday. He almost choked when I told him you & I had been talking about how he should go back in the studio. I have to talk to him this Monday. He's getting me some songs for a new artist. I told him about this site. We may be able to get him on it also. AND to the reunion in Sept.

Just wondering...anyone remember "I Sold My Heart to the Junkman" by Patti LaBell and the Bluebells? Heard it today and it sounded just as good as it did in 1962! More trivia...Eddie Holland recorded "Jamie" in 1961 and I was told it was written for "Frantic" Ernie Durham's daughter Jamie. When I finally met Ernie, I found out he didn't have a daughter named Jamie! Oh well...sounded good at the time! Really miss him...what a gentle man he was. Sorry, just babbling..it's late. Oh, spoke with Art Cervi and finally got him to visit the site. He's probably still trying to figure out how to navigate his way around the site! Also listened to both "The Fool" and "How How is High..." and can't believe the changes in Jamie's voice...how far apart were they recorded? Any one know?

Hi Millie -- oops I haven't been over here on the B side of the Forum for a while.

Too bad about Jackie K's health. I found out about this site because I met David when he was getting it together -- in fact I knew his story before Bill McGraw did but for a variety of reasons not relating to me, Bill beat me to print! He's a good pal and that's OK.

I will call you at CHUM, or call me and we'll dine.
