There used to be a radio show that broadcast on Saturdays from WCHB on Henry Ruff Road. The Paragons, before they became the Royaltones were on of the regular groups that played live on the radio. The station used to be on from sun up to sun down. Some of the DJ's at that time were Larry Dixon, Tall and Lanky Larry Dean and Jolton Joe Howard. Are these familiar names. This is also where Marth Jean the Queen did her broadcasts. They used to play some good music and one of thier sponsors was Nature Boy and Thunder Bird wine. What's the price? 44 twice.

I grew up in Detroit in the 50' & 60's listening to all the good stations: WJBK, WJLB, WXYZ, CKLW, etc. Fantastic times, fantastic stations, fantastic DJs, & of course fantastic music. Does anybody remember a show in the morning on CHB or JLB where the DJ Donnie, I forget the last name, would have Donnie's roll call? Everyday on the way to school in '65.
I have been looking for a song for over 30 years. It was soul and played in late '65 or early '66. I don't remember the name or group but the lyrics were: "Things have been different since you've been gon, Oh baby". Any help would be appreciated. Love this website. Thanks

Hello: I lived and was raised in Westland and became pretty good friends of Larry Dixon the afternoon dj on WCHB. The studio was located on Henry Ruff road, just south of Michigan and east of Venoy Road, about 10 minutes from my mother's house in Westland, Michigan. Myself and several of my friends would always listen to Larry every day (I believe 3 - 6 pm)and we would visit him often at the studio just to hang out after school. Larry invited us and we attended record hops with him at the Graystone Ballroom, Mr. Kelly's and a few others like Inkster High School, and some of the other larger high schools in Detroit. Larry was a friend to me a pseudo-father figure and I'll never forget him. He had perhaps the smoothest, deepest voice of any disk jockey I have ever heard. Not a particulary good looking man, but was he ever smooth.

Hey, Detroit radio was great, but we had corny stuff, mostly on the teen stations during the '60s. Like J. Michael Wilson's "Rodney the Wonder Rodent" ... I'm not saying I didn't listen and like it, I was a kid. And the music was still great.

P.S. If fury13 is around, I actually heard a request on oldies radio this past weekend, WOMC-FM, for "Village of Love." "By Nathaniel Mayer?" the deejay asked, and the female listener said "yeah."

And he played it! It was like living in a cooler, alternative universe if only for 3.2 minutes. Who knew mainstream oldies radio in Detroit plays that stuff? Before this the only Fortune side I've heard them play is "Mind Over Matter" by Nolan Strong and the Diablos.

Try radio station WDTR on Sundays 5 PM to 7 PM. They've got a show called OLD & GOLD. The Count has been on it. You got requests, they will play it. Not only "The Wind" but "Delores" by the Diablos also. I mean they got it. I moved from Detroit area 8 months ago so I can't, sorry to say, tune in anymore. Tried to listen every Sunday if I could. Great stuff!

You folks are stirring up some great memories for me. I was born, raised, and grew up in Detroit and 1440WCHB/Soul Radio AM was the serious radio station. Jay Butler, Butterball Jr., Fred Goree, and Martha Jean the Queen were but a few of the talented jocks to kicked out the jams back in the day. WCHB would also do a Christmas show in December and a Talent Show in the Spring and you'd see a stellar line-up of Motown and Detoit area entertainers at the Fox Theatre in Downtown Detroit for a few dollars. The station didn't have a lot of power so if you lived on the west side of Detroit you could get the station all of the time but if you lived on the east side of Detroit you could only get it during the day and at not at night. I was so glad I lived on the west side.

WCHB also had a sister station on the FM dial called WCHD which was an excellent jazz station. WCHD later changed their call letters to WJZZ and became a Detroit institution. WJZZ went under and WCHB-AM moved to where WJZZ-FM was and became WCHB-FM. Got that?!

Sadly, the station today is nothing like it was back in the 60's and 70's, but I've got some good memories.

Greg C,
Talkin'about soul. I think Frantic Ernie and Butterball Jr. taught us white boys more about soul and what is hip than anyone else. I remember Butterball saying one Fourth of July, "Don't celebrate the Fourth with a fifth or you may not see the sixth". What great days.
JZZ changed to rap & hip hop a couple of years back and then onto WCHB. I remember calling them and protesting because WJZZ at one time was an excellent Jazz station, Ed Love & Rosetta Hines, if you remember.
I grew up on the Southwest side, where were you from?
Tom (Pogo)
P.S. Don't forget Ernie & Oolya Cool

Tom (Pogo) Glad to see somebody else out there remembers. I lived on the west side on W.Philadelphia near Linwood which was about a 30 minute walk from Motown. I used to walk over to Hitsville a lot. My friends and I used to see the acts, the producers, etc. coming and going all of the time. I remember meeting the Spinners one day around the time that their recording of "Truly Yours" was out. Man, was I elated! They were so cool and talked with me.

I used to sneak over to Hitsville late at night when you'd see the "A" acts going in to record. My biggest thrill was meeting Eddie Kendricks and Paul Williams. Those guys were so friendly and geniune and we kicked it for about ten minutes before they had to go inside to get started. It was 1:30AM! My folks would've killed me if they knew I was over at Hitsville instead of in bed. LOL I had so many pictures and autographs from those days. I lost them when I moved from Detroit to NYC. I'm still in a funk about that...

Marilyn,

July 20th at the Millenium should be packed! By the way, what are you calling this history making event? Do you remember what Mickey Shore called his rock n' roll show at the Fox Theatre? (Rock 'N Rollarama)The Royal Jokers were on that show. If they're still together they would tear it up! I was the show's opening act. Mauice King had the 19 piece orchestra and Della Rise closed the show. It was the first Rock 'n Roll show at the Fox Theatre

Why don't you also invite all the "old" DJ's and those who had anything to do with that era to the show (if you havn't already)? By the way, can't wait to MC this show.. plus of course, you'll let me sing a medely of my biggest hits (that won't take long).
By the way, do you have any current pictures of me?

Greg C.,
I lived down the road on Livernois, "The Avenue of Fashion", just south of Michigan Ave. Used to hang out at Moreys on Mich. Gino Washington would stop in to perform occasionally. What a nice guy. I can remember seeing the Temptation, Supremes & Patti Labelle at our high school dances in the early '60s. A lot of the groups were starting out and testing their wares so to speak. Little did we know who and what we were experiencing. What a history to be part of.
These artists were real down to earth peopleand they sure didn't look down at you if you know what I mean.
Tom (Pogo)
P.S. I remember Martha Jean would tell the wives of the guys who worked at the auto plants when they were getting their vacation pay. "I betcha"
