I'm posting Joe's name because he is and has always been one of Detroits best guitar players as well as a long time friend of mine and probably most musicians that are posting or will be posting to this site.

Joe used to own Capitol Music and helped many of starving musicians get the equipment they needed or repaired what they had and never worried about getting paid, I hope he did. Joe also has the best jokes around so don't get him started unless you need a good laugh.

Take time and ask him some questions and you will be amazed by what he has to offer.

When I first met the Jackson 5 at Hitsville, they wanted to know where to buy the effects I was using. I sent them to see Joe and he sold them a lot of stuff. Joe also allowed me to try out any new special effects that came out. I bought all of my stuff from Joe in those days.

I'd like to take this opportunity to publicly thank both Dennis Coffey and George Katsakis. Two very fine musicians and human beings. We go back many many years.

In fact, Dennis and I played in the Mackenzie High School Orchestra (Upright string bass) under Mr. Louis LaRose.

In later postings, I shall include some of the old bars and toilets we used to work back in our bar daze!

Hey Bob, Do you remember one of the more 'funner' jobs we've played? HAIR! They said we had one of the BEST Hair bands in the world. This was because we all spent so many years together in the studios here. Therefore when we hit the first rehearsal, the company was amazed at how good we sounded and it only got better from there. Eight shows a week for six months or more at the Vest Pocket Theatre.....Wow! (It's torn down now)

Guitar - Me & Ray Monette
Bass - Bob Babbitt
Drums - Andrew Smith
Keyboard - Mark Olsen
Trumpets - Dave Culp & Johnny Trudell
Sax - Emette Stuart
I forget the other percussionists name

Also in the cast were MEATLOAF, Stoney, David Kelley, Sundiata etc.

Remember also the some of the great tunes:
Aquarius,
Let the Sunshine/Flesh Failures
White Boys
Walking in Space
What A Piece of Work is Man
Frank Mills
Hair
The Bed etc. etc.

It was in "Hair " that I first saw Meatloaf along with Stoney who was also in the cast.
My brother and I decidd that they would make a great duo and after some negotiations we signed them to Motown. And you are absolutely right Joe....the band was outstanding!

Dick....nice hearing from you again after MANY years. Yes, I neglected Stormin' Norman. At my advanced age and failing memory.....what can I say. Good old Randy. I have some great stories about him. The Wayne Show Bar was one of the few places that had the stage over the bar. Harold's Club in Lincoln Park was another.

I can't remember the owners' name of Wayne Show Bar BUT I do remember he used to serve 'used' swizzle sticks and used a drain in the floor of the back room for a john. Once upon a time, Babbitt accidently broke a bottle of Bleach while trying to pour it into the drain and cleared the place out. Dick & the Teenbeats rules......

Joe, its nice to your still doing well!I think the owner of Wayne show bar was named steve. When I was playing there,I would walk in with an emty briefcase&Babbitt a long coat,We would load up both with those sizzle-steaks in the back room.We didn't feel guilty,as all night long we'd watch Steve drain half-empty beers into empty bottles and sell them to half-looped guys sitting at the bar&how about those used swizzle sticks? Sometimes it's not so cool playing up behind the bar as it turns you into areal Clean-freak when you get adrink in a bar!!! Lynn

Lynn,

Once again you are telling the truth, I observed the same thing when I worked at the Wayne show Bar. One night when I was working there with Bob Babbitt one of the customers at the bar pulled out a gun and pointed it at me while I was playing. I nudged Babbitt and he thought I was joking because he didn't see it. The guy did it 3 or 4 more times during the set and I was the only one seeing it so I told Babbitt I was going to stand behind him and he just laughed. Finally I leand over and told Steve what was going on and he said don't say anything because the club was having a good night. When I went on a break there were two big truck driver type guys next to the guy with the gun so I told them what was going on and they said they would keep an eye open. When we went back up to play the guy at the bar pulled the gun out again and the two guys knocked him to the floor, beat him up and took the gun. It turned out to be a toy gun and the guy was just released from Eloise, which you may recall at that time used to be just up the street.

Hey Joe Podorsek!! How nice to see you have your own forum site! Due to Joe Messina, I just found this wonderful website.

You also mentioned about 40 or 50 names of one kind or another that I knew or was involved with one way or another. It's amazing how time flies as they say. Myself, I'm 39 after taxes. Otherwise I'll be hitting the big 70 this September 4th.

Speaking of Joe Podorsek kindness', when I first acquired my left-handed D'Angelico guitar in New York City, I brought it back with me to Detroit on vacation to practice on.

Joe & I had been friends for some years, and when I brought my (new) guitar back with me I decided I wanted to mount a prototype "Bill Lawrence" pick-up on my guitar. Joe Podorsek generously offered me the use of his shop at the "Capitol Music Studio" on Grand River Avenue, just north of Schoolcraft, (very near where I was staying with my Mom as a vistor with my family at the time) to install my new pickup.

At that time, as I recall, Joe didn't have a Dremel Hand Drill in the store yet which was necessary to install the pickup on the guitar itself. (This was a rather new technology at the time.) So I went to a local Sears store and spent something like $40.00 and bought the necessary tool and installed the pick-up and volume & tone controls on the pickguard.

Considering I knew nothing of this kind of thinking, it's remarkable that I could have pulled this off myself at all.

Joe gave me the necessary guidance to help me along in my quest. It could have been a rather worrysome thing but for him and I owe a mighty big thanks to Joe. I will never forget how much it meant to me that he allowed me to just walk in and take over his work bench!!

I love the idea of "Soulful Detroit.Com" as a means to say hello to old friends such as Joe Podorsek and Joe Messina and George Benson and all my old friends and fellow players.

I intend to drop on in from time to time to see who is where and how come and why not? I would be delighted to respond to anyone who wants to correspond with me at: .

I live on Long Island in East Rockaway, NY now and due to health constraints, have trouble traveling any real distance that doesn't involve driving. Otherwise, you'd see a lot more of me than you have been seeing over the past few years. So a big hello to all my old friends and guitarists!!

I really love the energy I have found at this website

Sincerely, with fond memories for all,

Wayne L. Wright

The next night she went out with a tuba player, and when she came back her roommate asked, "Well, how was his kissing?"

"Ugh!" the first girl exclaimed. "Those huge, rubbery, blubbery, slobbering slabs of meat; oh, it was just gross!"

"Well," the first girl replied, "his kissing was just so-so; but I loved the way he held me!"

Record Deal......

A musician who's spent his entire life trying to get a record deal is feeling extremely depressed. He's been turned-down by every record company he's ever contacted. No one seems to recognize his unique genius. So, he decides to top himself and comes up with an ingenius plan to get back at all the record companies who've rejected him.

He books time at a recording studio and instructs the sound engineer to record everything he says, and every sound he hears, and then copy it all on to 1000 CDs, and send a CD to every record company executive on the list that he hands the engineer.

The guy walks into the vocal booth; the red light is on, and he begins... "This is a message for all you sycophantic, talentless, stupid record company a***** who've ignored me for all these years. I've dedicated my life to writing beautiful, emotive, soul-searching music, and all you bastards do is discard my tapes, never return my phone calls, and sign these horrible, no-talent, ridiculous, dumb bands, and these filthy, dirty rappers! Well, you bunch of morons, you parasites, you dumb *****; I've taken all I can of your puerile, shallow industry, and it's you who have driven me to this! Goodbye you ****** murderers of art!"

With that, he pulls out a gun, puts it to his head and blows his brains out.

The sound engineer glances up and says,
"Okay. That's fine. Wanna go for a take?"

Actually, the engineer in the above story brings to mind my good friend Bob Ohllson. Bob had that unique characteristic of remaining somewhat detatched from the sometimes chaotic situations in a recording studio. The only difference might have been one of Bob's great little chuckles before asking if it was time for a take. I mean here's a guy that survived the shenanigans of Andrew Loog Oldham with a completely straight face.
