I've just been listening to a song buy The Darlings called "Two Time Loser" that was released on the Kay-Ko label in 1963. Does anyone know who was in this female group?
The Reflections also recorded on this label before they joined Golden World and scored with Romeo and Juliet.

In my opinion, Jerry Plunk of Flaming was ONE BAD WHITE BOY Man, on Westbound # 9 sometimes he growls like Pickett, to me anyway. I wonder if he can stil sing like that?? He has chicken watermelon and grits all over that vocal. BTW-Ralph, was that TS?? When he sings about that ol' lazy hound, he's howlin' right on time, man I feel him! My mind catches a ride right back to late sixties Detroit!!
AhOOOOOOO!!! (hound impersonation or close approximation)

The Darlings ("Two Time Loser") were three girls from Mumford High School in Detroit. Their names were Donna King, Judy Cutler and Marianne August. It's a great song with strong vocals, and was local hit. I'm not sure if they ever recorded anything else.

She was one special lady, and I had the pleasure of meeting her when I was but a small boy. She was still a "Springfield" at the time, and happily signed an E.P. of the group for me.
(E.P. -? That shows how long ago it was!)

Now, I wonder if there was any truth in that rumour that Motown wanted to sign her?

The special was so touching especialy at the end when her body with Dusty in flowers draped across the coffin in the horse drawn carriage with a sad song of hers being piped into the speakers outside of the church. Oh SO sad indeed!!

I nominate the RASCALS, for a while in the 60's they were the kings of Blue-eyed soul.Granted they lost it a bit when they went into psychadelic music, but The lead vocals were stunning, their heroes were Detroit based.
Ahmed Ertegun and Phil Spector were interested in signing them initially, and i bet if Mr Gordy knew about them, he would have been more than interested.

I thought Cry Like A Baby was pure Motown

Top of pageBottom of page   By Ritchie (62.254.0.6 - 62.254.0.6) on Sunday, July 14, 2002 - 04:51 pm:

The lead singer of the Box Tops was Alex Chilton. I think they were a little too far South for Motown, but they did have some fine Penn/Oldham songs to make up for it.

Top of pageBottom of page   By Greg (67.82.201.184 - 67.82.201.184) on Sunday, July 14, 2002 - 06:33 pm:

The Box Tops "Cry like a baby" was the 1st record I ever owned. My mother bought the album for my brother and me when we lived in Caracas, Venezuela in 1971. We used to sing "Choo choo train" to each other (probably because the 1st line in the song was "I got a present from brother...") The LP was already a few years old at the time, but Venezuela was not exactly up-to-date with American music back then. Believe it or not, even though Alex Chilton and the boys recorded in Memphis, there is a Detroit connection with the Box Tops (albeit rather tenous). Singing background vocal on some of their tracks is non other than the Masqueraders who recorded for Lou Beatty's La Beat label just a year or so before moving to Memphis.

"I'm Movin' On" by Matt Lucas was a big local hit in the Detroit area in the early '60s (was it a Detroit record, in fact??), and a kick-ass Rockin' version of the old Hank Snow chestnut. I didn't know 'til years after the fact that Matt Lucas was Caucasian. He was great..

Top of pageBottom of page   By Bob Olhsson (68.32.101.228 - 68.32.101.228) on Monday, July 15, 2002 - 01:03 am:

I spent a few hours eating barbecue last Saturday with Wayne Thompson who wrote "The Letter." His dad was the leader of a western swing band and I think he told me he grew up in Denver and Kansas City.

I'm learning that you can make as good a case for "southern" music being "northern" as you can for the funk brothers really being "southern." The great musicians and writers are really from all over the country. For example I just discovered that legendary pedal steel player Buddy Emmons is from Detroit.

Top of pageBottom of page   By Ritchie (62.254.0.6 - 62.254.0.6) on Monday, July 15, 2002 - 07:56 am:

Hi Bob

I do agree... This whole "Northern Soul" - "Southern Soul" thing is of course a hotly-debated point among long-serving Soulheads. I have personally disliked the term ever since its accidental inception, as - music is simply music, with a life of its own outside arbitrary pigeonholes. I only use the words "Northern Soul" as an easy shorthand, and because it's now an accepted term in most people's understanding. (Sadly, "Northern Soul" also includes a fair amount of white Pop nonsense, with as much connction with "Soul" as Coca Cola has with vintage wine - but that's a separate point.)

James and Bobby Purify, James Carr, Oscar Toney Jr, Otis Redding, Booker T & the MGs, Johnnie Taylor etc... all made records appreciated by the "Northern" clan, but were Southern artists. Similarly, the Ruffin brothers were Southerners by birth, but totally identified with Detroit.

Your detail on Wayne Thompson is an excellent example of how musical borders easily can easily be crossed. There's a great deal of Country influence in Southern Soul, and musicians' colour is often irrelevant - take Duane Allman, as an example - or "our own" Bobby, Dennis and Babbit.

I'd also like to make a (probably contentious) suggestion that certain Motown songs could easily be "Country" songs.. e.g. just listen to Jimmy Ruffin's Farewell Is A Lonely Sound, and tell me you can't hear a "Country" song!

Apart from certain more-recent productions, nobody really set out to make a "Northern Soul" record. Pepole just added the "Northern Soul" tag years later, and gave us something to argue about while listening to the music.

Alex Chilton post Box Tops career certainly crossed musical borders. His music as well as his voice were totally different as a solo artist and with his group Big Star compared to his Box Top years. Orleans label so I'd guess it's unlikely that
their Donna King is the same one who was in the
Darlings.

I've been meaning to post this for ages but kept
forgetting about it !

Here's a guy that many of you may not know about...James Hunter from the UK. He's a recent artist(90's-00's) that put out a CD on ACE RECORDS
called "Believe What I Say". Doris Troy & Van Morrison make cameos on the album. He's like an electric guitar slingin' Sam Cooke. It's one of the 10 records I would take to the moon. I'm not sure if he's ever toured the US...too bad for me!

Can I nominate a white group, not from the 60's but right now, in England - Snake Davis. They are familiar on the Northern scene, performing around the North West of England. I have seen them a couple of times - backing such folk as Gene Chandler, Jimmy Conwell and most recently, the Originals. They have now added a two girl vocal section and man can they SING! Keith

When it comes to solo artists surely there is only one white guy on the scene - DONI BURDICK - without going into the loft to look through some old files I recall that he is Canadian. An old school mate of mine, Bob Foster went to Detroit in the early '70s and knocked on the door of Sound Paterns and to his delight Doni was there. Man he was knocked out by this young English guy who owned all 3 of his records! Bob had a good look around and on the way out Doni presented him with an S.I.R. signed acetate of `I have faith in you.` When Bob played it to me (but remember we are talking almost 30 years here) I recall it being different to my issue. If I recall Bob sold it to Soul Sam (UK big time DJ), he may still have it! Incidentally, at around this time I asked Edwin Starr about the version and he said he rated it better than his!!! Keith

"Back To Blue Eyed Soul":Collected Works 1966-1999(Zecoda)DAVID LASLEY wrote a song called "ON THIRD STREET" about FORTUNE records long after he left the DETROIT recording scene which depicts the FORTUNE LABLE.Could this also have been a record lable SLOGAN.
and we jumped around the corner to hide from mrs.Brown
She would make you sing for nottin
Take the tapes and leave town
And you'd hear you on the juke-box
Under someone ele's name
Played by someone ele's quater
Whole F---IN thing is insane.
I had read somewhere that Devora Brown had viewed David as a white "NOLAND STRONG"........WOW,I would of takin that as a wonderful COMPLEMENT. Steve "THE COUNT"

Here's one I heard on Keener yesterday -- Georgie Fame! "Yeah Yeah" was a big hit in Detroit ...

Georgie Fame was - and still is as far as I know - one superb singer and musician. Hailing originally from Leigh in Lancashire he is a true "Northern Soul" artist.

Trivia time: he was chosen as the supporting artist on the UK Motown package tour of 1965.

An apt choice for the Motown tour -- his music would fit right in ...I got to see Georgie once in the '70s, at Ronnie Scott's, when I was a student over there. Great stuff ...

Maths -- eek! Yes I successfully infiltrated merrie olde in order to study -- English lit, what else. At the Univ. of London. I did important research in clubs like Ronnie's. I've been back a few times since. As a student, I had tapes of Motown that I played to stave off homesickness.

Lest not forgot Roy "Treat Her Right" Head, early Ronnie Milsap "Let's Go Get Stone/"Never Had it So Good," and Johnny Daye. Timi Yuro was also considered blue eye soul, she appeared with soul acts at soul venues.

Mel,

Thanks for the info on the HBR Billy Storm - the
one I was thinking of had sung with numerous
West Coast groups and had solo releases on
labels like Infinity and Vista.
