I thought as the term Northern Soul crops up on the forum with regularity it might be interesting for the American contributors to see what is currently being played on the Northern Soul scene at allnighters. I know there is some confusion (even over here !) as to what constitutes Northern Soul.

The records below are the ones I played at The Trentham Gardens allnighter last Saturday night between 11.30 pm and 1.00 am, in roughly the order I played them:

Fuller Brothers - Time's A Wasting - Soul Clock
Doni Burdick - Bari Track - Sound Impression
Soul Brothers Six - I'll Be Loving You - Atlantic
Patti & The Emblems - I'm Gonna Love You A Long Long Time - Kapp
Major Harris - Call Me Tomorrow - Okeh
Doc & The Interns - Baby Baby I Know - Now
The Fabulous Apollos - The One Alone - Valtone
Frank Dell - He Broke Your Game Wide Open - Valise
Roosevelt Grier - In My Tenement - Rik
H B Barnum - It Hurts Too Much Too Cry - RCA
Tommy Navarro - I Cried My Life Away - De -Jac
David & Reuben - I Love Her So Much It Hurts - Warner Brothers
Garland Green - Girl I Love You - Revue
Brooks O'Dell - Standing Tall - Columbia
Pat Brown - The Good Gotta Suffer For The Bad - Seven B
Bobby Hutton - Come See What's Left Of Me - Phillips
Andrea Henry - I Need You Like A Baby - MGM
The Sparkels - Try Love -Old Town
Lonnie Lester - You Can't Go - Nu Tone
Don Gardner - My Baby Loves To Boogaloo - Tru-Glo-Town
The Caressors - I Can't Stay Away - Ru Jac
The Magnetics - I Have A Girl - Ra Sel
The Vondells - Hey Girl - Airtown
T C Lee & The Bricklayers - Up And Down The Hill - King
Troy Dodds - Try My Love - El Camino
Joe Douglas - Crazy Things - Playhouse
Sherlock Holmes - Standing At A Stand Still - Part III
Little Hank - Try To Understand - Sound Stage 7
Jimmy Wallce - I'll Be Back - Alpha
The Enchantments - I'm In Love With Your Daughter - Faro
Joanne Courcy - I Got The Power - Twirl
Johnny Washburn - Into Your Heart - Acetate
Patience Valentine - If You Don't Come - SAR
Big Daddy Rogers - I'm A Big Man - Midas

Comments are invited, and I thought it might be fun if we tried to identify which ones members of this forum played on or wrote / arranged / produced. If only to show that their music is still appreciated and enjoyed on a large scale over here.

Trentham Gardens was very busy on the night with probably 500 people in the venue, most of whom danced at some stage during this set.

Re the Tru-Glo-Town label: I'm assuming it's named after the owners of the label. One of the people involved, I believe, was Ed Townsend (the "For Your Love" guy from the '50s who later became a Motown VP), which would account for the "Town" part. Who were the others?

On this label, I really like the Sandpebbles and Joe Moore tunes.

Best,

Mark

Tru-Glo Town was Gloria Toote and Ed Townsend.

Mark,
Do you know when Ed Townsend was VP of Motown? For Your Love is one of my all-time favorites. I bought it when I was a kid and played it endlessly.

I believe Mr. Townsend was a Motown exec in the early '70s, after they went Hollywood.

Mark

The Enchantments on Faro was indeed covered up as "The Detroit Shakers"(and also as the "Del Capris" around the same time!)
There's a list of x400+ popular Northern Soul cover ups on my site:
