Hey Babbitt, good to hear you are doing so great. I'm proud of you buddy. Do the people that are contacting you know that you were one of the first guys to play trumpet with your right hand and play the bass with your left hand at the same time? Just a little info on the man. I'm still playing, and better than ever now. Get in touch when you have time. You can reach me through George Katsakis. The old Dixie Bell and Rose Bar. Nick Palise

SON OF THUNDER......JAMERSON WAS THE BASS PLAYER ON THAT VERSION AS WELL AS THE DIANA ROSS VERSION..
I AM NOT SURE IF BENNY WAS THE DRUMMER ON EITHER ONE OF THE VERSIONS?? I THINK UREIL WAS ON THE
DIANA ROSS VERSION? AS FAR AS PLAYING ON ANY RECORDS WITH BENNY....WE DID "WITH THIS RING" AND
"I LOVE YOU 1000 TIME'S" FOR THE PLATTERS AND SOME OF THE GOLDEN WORLD ARTIST,EDWIN STAR,JJ BARNES AND OTHER ARTIST..... I DON'T REMEMBER ALL OF THE SESSIONS WITH BENNY THAT I DID BUT THERE WERE A LOT OF THEM!! I DO NOT REMEMBER DOING ANY SESSIONS AT MOTOWN WITH BENNY.........BOB BABBITT

I am a bass player myself, having played blues and R&B in club bands around the Bay Area for almost 30 years and I have to say it is both a great thrill and great privilege to be reading posts directly from Bob who was such an important contributor to Motown. I can't wait for the movie and hope that it will finally bring the attention deserved by these tremendous musicians that is so long overdue. It is only tragic that it is too late for those that have passed, especially James Jamerson who inspired the book and the movie.

Hi everybody! This is that little bald guy, George Young (George Young and the Youngsters)letting you all know I'm still bald and still in the business fulltime. But.. I don't have the band any more. Instead, I produce and host my own live game show. That may sound strange but it turned out to be a big hit... like that gong show I had at the Jester's Court.

The "youngsters" are still around and we still keep in touch. John Karen (drums & trumpet) works at the big appliance dept. at Sears in Lincoln Park. He is the best trumpeter I've ever heard. Johnny Turdell will tell you that too.

Denny DeAmbrosio (sax) is living on Marco Island, FL.. teaches school and is very busy playing club dates.

Jay Valle (organist) still lives in Wyandotte and still plays his "ass off!". He also working with Hammond Organ company.

This is a great page... first time I've been on. Sorry to say, I'll be going over to pay my respects to the passing of Gary Dean (Sallsbury). Will be seeing Babbitt there.

Remember this.. the show must go on! The guy who said that.. didn't show up!

HI George Young. It's Steve The Count of The 5ive Invictas. Remember doing lots of record hops and other gigs with you guys, you were very comical then and I am sure you are today. Anyhow, I go on a radio station from time to time on Sundays, WDTR Old&Gold 90.9 from 5pm--7pm. I have just about every Detroit groups 45's and studio reel to reel recordings and play them on each show I go on. I also play a lot of all the old radio jingles from all the Det.radio stations and old advertisements.A lot of them contain the record hops and who will be appearing for that nite, mostly are WJBK Clark Reid and Robert E. LEE (the reble with a cause). The last time I was on, I played your 45, Mechanic From Hamtramck, and the flipside,Jonny B. Goode. I also record every show and transfer them to CD. I have a old super8 movie I put on video of you ,the Teen Beats, us,the Thunder Rocks, and others. Dig it man, reform your group and be George Old and The Oldsters. I hope this will work, I am going to scan your 45'S AND TRY TO PUT IT ON THIS PAGE.WILL BE SEEING YOU REAL SOON. Steve The Count.

Hey everybody.. it's my pal Ralph Terrana .. how can I ever forget the day at Tera Shirma Recording Studio on Livernois? One day we were doing a session when Lewis from the musicians union came in and asked if we had made out a contract for the gig... when we said no.. we haden't made one out yet, he when up to the control room where a out-of-town producer was spending money to get the "Detroit sound" .. when Lewis grabbed the tape off of the recorder.. walked to the door.. opened it up and threw the tape out on Livernois. Next time, there better be a contract and walked out.

The producer was so upset.. he yelled that he would never do a record session in Detroit again!

Do you remember that day, Ralph? Yes, this is me George Young and I'm still bald!

Talking about Buddy Wilde... and that's how he played his sax.. wilde.. like Sam Butera (from the Louie Prima days). Buddy joined, George Young and the Youngsters when we worked at Jerry's Showbar on Fort Street in Wyandotte (good ole Wyandotte).

During that time, an agent from Chicago flew in and booked us for the Frontier in Vegas.(and that's another story).

Buddy not only worked in the group in Vegas but also in Reno, Nevada. There's only one Buddy Wilde and he now lives in Vegas.

He doesn't play anymore.. as he sadly told me when Karole and I met him during our last visit in Vegas after so many years had passed.

It's a sad story because of a terrible accident.
Buddy had married a lady who owned a bar on Woodward avenue in Highland Park. One day as Buddy was helping out behind the bar... a customer asked for a drink and as Buddy was serving him.. for no reason.. the man brought out a gun and shot Buddy in the mouth.

It didn't kill him but it looked like his sax days were over but you don't know Buddy... he did everything from therapy to major operations to get it where he could play again and he did!

He was working with Marcus Terry for awhile when he moved to Vegas but the money in Vegas is slim to none .. so, Buddy isn't playing anymore.

Hey.. Nick Palise.. tell us what happened when you and Buddy went to Windsor to sit in when King Curtis was working at the Riveria.

Neica Lee was a pretty good gatekeeper and usually no one got through the recepton room without her approval. Maybe you were smoking something" funny " and dreamed this????
What I remember most about you and Tera Shirma is how we would all be in Neica Lee's office and you would be making me laugh.

The business never changes, only the names. Most "execs" have no vision or forsight.
I plead the fifth on my actual feelings at this time. If we had people with forsight , a lot of the obscurities would not be obscure and we would have more sucessful artists with real careers not just a vacuous dream of promises unfulfilled.
It is a shame that dreams have been destroyed by these mindless idiots with large expense accounts.
I rest my case.

Bob Babbitt, you've been involved with so many recordings in various locations(Detroit,Philadelphia,Seattle,New York,Nashville, and now I see Chicago).Have you, like other musicians, thought of writing a book? Also, there was a record named "Hungry For Love"that you played on that came out of Detroit I believe. It was an instrumental.Do you remember who the artist was(some type of symphony)Would like to find out more about the work you did in Chicago.I will pursue this with Mike Terry and Jack Ashford.Thank you again for your information.

Hungry For Love was put out on the San Remo Strings on Ric Tic 104

The vocal was by Tony Michaels on Golden World 41..I Love The Life I Live (and I Live The Life I Love)

Talking about San Remo Strings instrumentals, does anybody know the origin of the following record?

Slow Fizz SF1 - Detroit Sound - We're Gonna Party
b/w Evie Sands - Picture Me Gone

It's obviously a boot, but someone has put a vocal over the top of Festival Time (and it's not Laura Lee). The whole thing s a bit tongue in cheek but someone must have created it.

I seem to remember the festival time vocal being played by Chris King (a midlands DJ) in about 80/81.
I looked at the label and it was covered up (of course) I asked about and was told that he had commissioned it. it wasn't over memorable though.
From the hype it was given I wouldn't be suprised if a few copies weren't pressed up for sale.

Thanks Eric

It could possibly even be Chris singing! You can almost hear the shower in the background!

Hey Babbitt,
I have an MP3 of Soul Makousa. I can send it to you via either AOL Instant Messenger or Yahoo Instant Messenger. The file is too large for a direct e-mail.
If you are so inclined, contact me by e-mail and I will shoot it off to you.

We did a version of Soul Makosa with Ritchie Rome and Phill Hurtt but it was not the original. That could be the one. I think the original was done in Africa!

Hm, I still think the Manu Dibango original was more likely enregistre en France... I've seen the Manu Dibango lp on several labels (well, Phillips & London I believe), I have a bunch of his albums & they're great.

Babbitt, are you on "I Want You Back" or not?If this is Wilton Felder, was Motown recording in LA in 1969,because that's when this record came out?The drummer on the record does not sound like an LA drummer.

Hey Babbitt, Fred Saxon here. Don't know if you remember me or not...but I sure do remember you.
I understand you're in touch with Milan. Please tell him to check out the forum, I think he'd get a kick out of it. I send him emails from time to time but he's pretty buried in his business these days I guess and I'm not sure he checks his mail frequently. Good to hear you're still doin' it. You are the best, the standard. I was in NY last weekend to do some interviews for my TV show (Woody Allen, George Hamilton, etc.). It was a great time. I spoke to Mike Theodore by phone. It was great. Really cool how the internet, and especially this venue has re-connected so many, from so long ago.
I've been too busy lately and don't get back to the forum that often. I understand there's a Sept. event in Detroit. Will you be there?
Best regards, Fred

HEY FRED.....GOOD TO HEAR FROM YOU!THIS FORUM IS GREAT! I SEE MILAN A LOT AND DID TELL HIM ABOUT THIS BUT I DON'T KNOW IF HE READS IT OR NOT? THE NEXT TIME I SEE HIM I WILL REMIND HIM AGAIN.
NOT SURE ABOUT THE SEPT 6TH REUNION YET??
I KNOW THAT THERE WILL BE A PREIMER OF THE MOTOWN FILM IN DETROIT BUT I'M NOT SURE OF THE DATE.... GOD BLESS AND TAKE CARE.....BOB BABBITT

With regard to I WANT YOU BACK - see the separate thread on the recording. We await the contribution of guitarist Don Peake to set everyone straight, since he was there. We do know it was Don (gtr), Wilton Felder (bass), Joe Sample (piano) and Gene Pello (drums). But I think Don should have the chance to confirm all that since, again, HE WAS THERE.
