Nice one Glenn,
These charts are great for checking the release dates of obscure Detroit 45s. I see that there are 2 Ge-Ge (Thelma) releases are on the chart. WCHB was also named "Soul Radio" - but you already know that.

This is what we're missing - to find out how popular some of these tracks we collect really were!

These charts are always fascinating - especially to us Brits. And I do agree about their usefulness.

As we've never really had such a thing as "local" charts here, here's a question....

When US regional stations compiled their own charts, what were they based on - local sales, number of plays, or listeners' requests?

there's lots of surprises in there.

ncluding nolan chance's epic 'she's gone' and my favourite d town record 'hurt by love' by silky hargreaves.

I once interviewed Jay Butler - a DJ who worked at both WJLB and WCHB in Detroit in the 1960s. One of his jobs was to compile these charts; he told me he simply listed records he thought were doing well - there was no great analytical study involved. Take them with a pinch of salt regarding their representation of popularity and sales..... but they're a lot more interesting than Billboard.

Hi Graham

Thanks for that. I guess the jocks had their finger on the pulse of their local music scene, so their choices are probably as good as anyone else's - disregarding any little back-handers, of course!

Even after all these years, I have still not heard Camel Walk by the Ikettes..is it the same as Sandra Mallet's version on Tamla...

I notice one of Detroits finest ladies are at (unlucky for some) number 13.....pity they spelled the name wrong!!

I was walking down the street (do waddy waddy)

Silky Hargreaves' Hurt By Love was a pretty fair local hit. Unlike most of the other Detroit singles shown on this list (Eddie Hill, Freddie Gorman), Hurt By Love also charted on WKNR, which was the best all-round rock and roll station in the city. I know it reached number 20, and may have gone higher.

What's the Lee Oates record on Enterprise? Presumably it's the same Enterprise label as features Shirley Lawson, Jamie Coe, the Lazy Eggs et al? I don't think I've ever seen it.

Joe

I've got listed:

Enterprise E5035 - Lee Gates - Don't Make It A Habit/Nothin' But Wonderful

Perhaps it's Oates & not Gates. I bet Ritchie could comment on that! By the way, I saw a record by The African Beavers today! Beat that!

Hi folks. I played live on WCHB when I was 17 with a teen club band called the Pyramids. We did Honky Tonk and Jimmy Reed. WCHB later evolved into WJZZ and moved to Grand Blvd in Detroit. I did live interviews on WJZZ as well.

Another great name on the above WCHB chart is the late Walter Jackson - at number 11.
Athough he recorded in Chicago I believe he stayed in Dertoit most of the time. Did anyone here on the forum ever get the chance to see him perform live in the 1960s? What a wonderful voice! I love his "That's What Mama Say" and "It's An Uphill Climb To The Bottom" - both released on Okeh.
Best wishes, Graham

I grew up in Detroit in the 50' & 60's listening to all the good stations: WJBK, WJLB, WXYZ, CKLW, etc. Fantastic times, fantastic stations, fantastic DJs, & of course fantastic music. Does anybody remember a show in the morning on CHB or JLB where the DJ Donnie, I forget the last name, would have Donnie's roll call? Everyday on the way to school in '65.
I have been looking for a song for over 30 years. It was soul and played in late '65 or early '66. I don't remember the name or group but the lyrics were: "Things have been different since you've been gon, Oh baby". Any help would be appreciated. Love this website. Thanks

Hi

This is my first visit to your site...I could stay here for hours ! So much information. What brought me in here? I had just read on a web site that Tammi Terrell had a sister that sang ...I loved Tammi's voice .

It was indeed a sad day when she was taken from us so young and with so much still to give.

What amazed me was that it stated that Tammi's sister may have stepped in at times and sang in her sisters place...A voice the same ? I've never heard of this sister ...did she record in her own right at that time?..what was her name ?

Sorry If I appear eager for info ..its enthusiasm

BTW ..Its great to see such a multitude of great sounds on one chart list.....how fortunate the public were to hear this material week in week out on the radio ! Makes you wonder what the youth culture of America think of it today ?

Do the over 45's still cherish and dance to this stuff in America...like we do in the UK ? Surley
the black peoples of America still cherish these sounds ? A musical time (60s) has never been bettered IMHO.

Hi Carms

Welcome to the Forum. You've probably sussed that Tammi is very dear to us here, and her sister Ludie calls in from time to time too. Plus, Vickie - who's working on Tammi's biography - keeps us posted on the book's progress.

I think the story of Tammi's sister "stepping in" may be a misunderstanding on someone's part. When Ms Terrell was finally unable to fulfill her studio obligations, her vocal parts were "ghosted" by Valerie Simpson (of producer-songwriter duo Ashford & Simpson) and not a blood relative. Marvin was reportedly unhappy with the idea, and the whole affair was kept as a top secret for many years.

By the way, no need to apologise for enthusiasm - that's what this forum thrives on!

Have to ask

Since been told that Robbie of the Ikettes was a sister too ?
sorry if I appear a little dumb.

I have listened to Robbie "Crazy in love " her voice is great in its own right , but it's not like Tammi's ....so maybe this is another missundersating ?

Thanks
Carms

Hi Carms

I think that's another "tall story" - and a new one on me. Either somebody out there is very mistaken or they have a very vivid imagination. I'm sure that Vickie's book will lay all the rumours to rest, and tell the real story once and for all. Keep checking in - maybe Vickie or Ludie might have an idea where the Ikettes story may have originated. (I certainly haven't heard of any connection.)

Maybe it was Just a little misunderstanding!

Thanks Carl
Can't wait for this book to come out , as I am sure a lot others are too.

Be great if one of the ladies mentioned aswered my questions , have to keep checking it out:)

My latest quest is trying to find out if Lonzine Cannon is male or female ...appears 50/50 at the mo either way, of the people I have asked....can anyone confirm ? I think what's confused it is that it was played as an Earl Jackson Cover up.

The sound in connection to the name is called
Quit while I'm ahead...to me those lyrics were written for a women .....I just can't see a man singing them?

Don't know if he/she falls into "Detroit! as a pidgeon hole.....but she's black & beautifully soulful , so its fine by me .

Glenn,
Do you by chance have surveys from late 1965 (Sept. 1965) to early 1966 (May 1966). Would love to hear from you.

Glenn,
You may be just the man I am looking for. There was a song played on the soul stations in late 1965 (Sept on) or early 1966 (up to May) I have been looking for. I don not know the name but the lyrics went: "Things have been different since you've been gone, Oh baby". By any chance do you know the song? Thanks
Tom

It isn't possible to post music files on this Forum, and I'd recommend against it if it were. Apart from the size of .wav files - at least 20 Megabytes per track, and the associated long download times - there is the question of copyright. However, there's nothing really to stop you uploading them as mp3 files into some free webspace, then posting a link to the files here.

A Yahoo Club I was a member of was closed down for posting mp3 and ra files, so caution is the best policy :o)
