Hi George,
Do you remember any of the following people? John Fraga, Ronald Kassajda, Gary Praeg and Vin Scalbrino? I think they played in a group together in the early 60s.
Best wishes, Graham
By george Katsakis (152.163.201.53 - 152.163.201.53) on Saturday, April 06, 2002 - 05:46 pm: |
Graham,
John Fraga and Vince Scalabrino and I also played in a group together called Wazoo and we had one album on ZiGZag Records circa 1971/2. John was also an artist and did the insert for the album which I'm sure is very rare. I haven't seen John since that time and I often wonder what became of him. Vince still works with a band but I can't think of the name. I also heard that he is working as a dealer in one of casinos in Detroit. I think it's the GreekTown Casino. I don't think I know the others you are asking about. However, with a little effort I could probably find Vince for you because I know other people that he knows.

Graham and George
John Fraga played in the original Rockets in the late '70's early '80's with a couple ex-Detroit wheels. I mentioned this last week in a post about Don Davis' Tortoise International records which issued the first Rockets LP. I played a few gigs with John in the mid to late '80's (backing blues harmonica guy Darien james) at the Delta Lady and I believe Rosie O'Gradys (both around 9 Mile and Woodward) and last I heard he was still showing up and sitting in at blues bars; It's probably been six or seven years since I've heard anything about him though- he was going with a drummer friend of mine's sister so I'll check into it. BTW, I'd LOVE to find a copy of that Wazoo LP ! Steve K.

Hey George, it was really good to see you again last night at the Clawson. We reminised about the good times and all. Please dont feel bad about the ROYALTONE thing, afterall my drums were old and that was that. The "Royaltones" were and always will be the best.I really cant think of a bad entertainer from the motown, such great talent was right from here.Anyhow when I got home lastnite, I dug through some tapes, and much vinyl (ROYALTONES).I came across the GEORGE BAND,I recorded it from the OLD&GOLD show.Do you remember that?in that little crowed studio. It sounded great.(Mike Swayde,Bob Silverberg, Sal, Jumpin Jim,ETC.et me know if you would like a copy of that particular show and I'll put it on a CD for you.I also found my Jimmy Freeman album,I listined to it till 3.15 this A.M. (What a Looney he was and the memories it brought back.my ol lady couldn't figure out what the heck was so funny,I had the headphones on listing to "Uncle Jimmy") Steve "The Count"

George, first I'd like to re-state my comment about no-talent D.J,s. what I was refering to was the local yahoo who instead of getting a second job at MacDonalds buys a cheap-ass D.J. outfit, has posters made up,& takes jobs away from up and coming young musicians that need the training in front of a live audience.NOT the fine crew that works the Old&Gold show or any other professional D.J. That a different ball-game.What have I been up to?Outside of working with a local band untill recently,I,ve been touring with a 20 piece band that Northwest Airlines sponserd for different occations around the world, but thats all history as of Sep. 11 & the downturn in the economy,as of this moment I,m doing double& triple paradiddles on my drum-pad keeping my wrist,s from turning to stone. Let me know about that get together in sep.I,d love to see all the Detroit Cats from the early days,Lynn

Hi George!
Miss Schwartz (Marge) had a fantastic idea for our soulfuldetroit.com fundraiser. We should hold it at the Clawson on the 6th of September! That way everyone will already be there. We could also videotape the event and sell it on the site. If Dennis Coffey could convince Bob Babbitt to join us in Detroit, imagine how awesome the evening would be...absolutely memorable! We have over three months to put this together...please tell me what you think!!!! There are a ton of musicians who would show up, and as Ralph suggested, we could have a "house" band and let everyone come up and sit in. And Lee Alan as the DJ would be the frosting on the cake! Between all of us, we should be able to get a hold of just about everybody! Good stuff, eh? Not only that, a friend of mine writes for the Detroit News, she visits the site occasionally, and has already promised that she'd give up press!! What else could we possibly ask for? Oh yes..television coverage!!! Lots of it.

Millie...If it is a fund raiser or a reunion...I will be there...I hope Dennis will be there...I would love to see him again. Do you think a ton of musicians will be there??? I just want to see my old friends. That's how this got started. You and I need to e-mail personally. Maybe your big fund raiser should be on another night. I just want to see my good friends that I worked with in the 60's in Detroit...that won't happen if it becomes a big fundraiser. Please give me a call and we can talk about it.

Hi DeAnne:
We've decided that Sunday, the 8th of September would be perfect...that way people who come in for the 6th will still be here (at least I hope so)! Originally the plan was to do it at the Clawson, but a lot of people feel there's not enough room there. Steve (Count) is calling Club 182, and George K is looking into the Sand Trap which has a large room above the bar, along with a balcony and food! This could change l5 times between now and then...wish you were here to work on it with me!
