John mentioned on a previous thread about what would happen if the server goes down.
It worries me that should we loose any of the thread conversations, we really have lost a little bit of history. The information in them is invaluable from everybodys point of view. Since I found the site I know I have truly found something special to look forward to each day I log on. The stories told should be kept forever somewhere. I am going to investigate a solution to 'save' these important electronic conversations for future reference, even if it means a copy and paste into a 'word' document. I am lucky enough to have a broadband connection and enjoy quick refresh and downloads. With that in mind I need a point in the right direction. If anybody has any ideas!! David/Lowell, do you archive stuff off the server, because it gets full or anything like that?? I think we would all be sad to find information like this gone forever. What I would like to do is have the forum stuff put on to a re writable cd in its familiar form.

That is a very good point, and one which I've been thinking about recently too. If somehow the gems and pearls here were lost, it would be a disaster of major proportions indeed.
As for a backup archive, wouldn't it be better in the original HTML? At least this is a "universal" format, whereas MS Word is rather more restricted.

Agreed! The very person who can tell me will be walking through my door very shortly! My wife! She knows about this sort of thing. What I do not want is to save hundreds of the same files that make up the cosmetics of the pages. I know they exist in one location and are 'referred' to when needed. I have just saved this thread and it is just over 1kb. I will be back....

The short-term solution is to:
1/create a folder on your hard drive - call it Soulfuldetroit
2/go to your browser and the soulfuldetroit forum page with threads.
3/right mouse click on the individual thread and 'save target as'. Prompt, to your folder on the hard drive you made earlier, and hit 'save'.
You can then update them say, once a month, if the dates have changed on the thread and add the new threads.

I have just followed my own instructions and saved all the thread converstaions totalling about 7mb. Disadvantage, they save as a number, not the title of the thread and it took me a good 45mins and a computer crash/reboot. I now have cramp in my index finger. What would be good is, if there was a folder available to download with one mouse click, or even two!

David asked me to respond to this issue. At some time, this forum will grow beyond the limits of our virtual server and have to be archived. However, that moment is not at hand.
Part of the service we get with our virtual server is that they do backups every 24 hours. So if a crash ever occurs on their end, we can recover back to whenever the crash occured minus the hours from the last backup routine.
Nonetheless, it is good that Carl has made a redundant backup. To get around the numbering system, I would suggest also copying the home page of the forum with the list of discussions. This contains links to the numbered messages and it would just be a simple matter of editing this page and putting things in the right folder to get get them to link to the proper discussion.
Carl, if you [and your wife] would like to assist this effort, I would be happy to send you instructions and give you ftp access to our virtual server so that you could easily download all of the messages directly.
FYI, virtual server means that we host soulfuldetroit.com on a shared server that carves out a private area for us. It is similar to having a real server, but without having to run our own server computer with all the worries of security, administration etc.

Thank you Lowell - I will consult my wee hen about this. I fear FTP because I never do it. She loves it and does it all the time. She has all the programmes and understands the logistics. I will drop you a mail when and if ready. I would not like to tread on toes and then damage this 'volatile' media! It is too precious..
