Melvin Davis actually owned Rockmill. Prior to that he'd recorded for Fortune, Jackpot, Groovesville, KeKe, Mala and Invictus - and maybe a couple of others I've forgotten. He wrote songs for Lou Beatty (LaBeat), Johnnie Mae Matthews and others. He also played drums on various Detroit sessions, including LaBeat and Groovesville.

Hi folks. Melvin Davis is still in Detroit. I did a show with him and Lyman Woodard at Sullys in the nineties. Mike Theodore and I produced him in the late sixties and I also worked with him in a jazz trio with Lyman. Great drummer, singer and writer.

Hello out there!!

Is this the same Melvin Davis that plays bass with Chaka Khan & Gladys Knight? I watched the Chaka Khan "BET on Jazz" special and if that is the same guy playing the 7 string bass, then my hat is off to him!!! Outstanding!!!

Hey if Melvin is listening, I cant play like Vinnie but Im close :)!!

Yes, I did Bearhug on Melvin Davis. He wrote the song. I'm sure Mike Theodore was involved as well. As far as I know Melvin does not play bass. His son also plays drums in Detroit.

He's not quite 7 feet - about 6'6" I'd guess.
The surprise is he never played basketball.

No, That's Graham Anthony.
He ought to get a computer!
BTW - I misunderstood your quest - I thought you were after all of Melvin's 45s - not label filling Groovesville.
The Japanese CD that you have - Is that the one with a photo of The Jaywalkers group? Does it show David Ruffin?

No it`s called "Melvin Davis" "Love truth and victory" on P-Vine,it has all his "Rock Mill" tracks
on it plus unreleased stuff from the 70s and 80s,
there`s a picture of him on the front looking slick
from 68,and on the back one from 96 with long braided hair, the sleeve notes were done by "Frank
Garcia.

Steve regarding the "Let love in your life" track
although put out in 91,it was recorded in Aug 78,
with background vocals by the likes of"Pat Lewis",
and "Hot buttered soul",and also the "Detroit symphony orchestra was on there as well, would have liked to have been there when that was being recorded, there was another version done by "Charisma" on "Rock Mill"8267.
Dave.

Tats Taylor is the man on the UK side of the pond for info on Melvin Davis. You should see the video tape of Tats and Melvin Davis ..... Along with Tim Murray .... singing 'Thinking Of You' outside the Greyhound Track in Detroit!! Tim Murray works on the gate down at the track if anyone wants to check him out. He's also a very good friend of Melvins and could put you in touch I guess. And yes he's a very tall guy (Mel not Tats)
