There is a wonderful radio personality who is a friend of mine named Felix Hernandez who plays a great selection of records which no one else plays
including Motown and Philly rarities and much more. He will broadcast on Saturdays from 10am-2pm New York time. He is on wbgo fm and it is on line at www.wbgo.org or check out his site www.classicsoul.com
He is the most loved NYC "oldies" guy and he has a dance monthly at Roseland and they usually have more than 3000 people in attendance.
He recently was on 105.1 but thay changed the format and he went back to the station where he can spin anything he wishes. Check him out. He also takes requests, and mention that you all are friends of mine!!!!

I have friends in high places too...

I know the guy who works in the gents loo (restroom) at the main line railway station......mention my name to him to be assured of a good seat

HA HA HA HA HA

I cannot afford these railway station rest rooms these days John, however if I become flush I will pop in...... and probably straight out again.

If I surprise my wife with a visit to New York, we have spoken about it recently; I would check Felix and the club out. We have seen many attractions in the city already and this would be different. Bobby, I would need to glean from you the rarest thing he has in his collection in order I may impress him. A grade 'b' impression would be fine although a fictitious record and label could do the trick until he did his research afterwards!! I could mention something like: yeah! Its a Philly thing, came out about 1974 by 'The Wife of Robin Stone' and called 'Don't take her back, if it takes forever' or something!!

I just logged onto the website at 88.3 and the first thing I heard was Felix, promoting his Saturday show!!!!! Weird Beard or what? I may drop him a line, if there is an email. The sound quality is excellent off this station. Can't wait to hear those jingles - Pams, Jam, Pepper and Tanner, Thompson Creative or what? wooopeeee!

Top of pageBottom of page   By Carl Dixon London (62.31.40.155 - 62.31.40.155) on Sunday, March 24, 2002 - 11:50 am:

I did suspect - I think I saw a post from that alias on the forum some while back! I am sorry it never worked. Coincidentally I was out all afternoon until 9pm and had access to broadband. It was sweet as a nut, the sound quality. Amazing for the Internet. I feel radio stations have big competition now. They have to streamline or they will loose listeners. No disrespect to say 'Heart 106.2', here in London, but they play 'The best of my love' by The Emotions nearly every day now. I get a little brassed off when radio stations do that.

Top of pageBottom of page   By Ritchie (62.254.0.5 - 62.254.0.5) on Sunday, March 24, 2002 - 11:52 am:

Yes, John

And every time I get a mail from you or see a posting with that username, the Boy From Xtown song instantly begins to play on my brain's turntable.

I suppose I should be grateful you didn't pick a less desirable song like Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep!

on that subject.....

my wife listens to the local radio station in the kitchen for a bit of background music.

and it appears to be the same crap played day in/day out.

i always feel there is something 'going on'...why should these songs get preferential treatment? ie royalties.

Top of pageBottom of page   By FrankM (62.254.180.39 - 62.254.180.39) on Monday, May 20, 2002 - 03:04 pm:

Oldies stations tend to license a group of records and they are rotated every month or so. Radio Clyde in Glasgow has a block that includes Bob Dylan I want you. It sticks out for me so over a few months I realised that it was played alongside certain other oldies. So stations buy the rights to blocks of oldies for so many plays perhaps at a discount rate. In some ways oldies picked by computer can throw up surprises but in others it leads to predictable plays. With computerisation vinyl decks and now CD players have disappeared from broadcast studios.

Except for the little room I broadcast from in Glasgow which has a pair of Technics as well as CD players and Minidisks for my straight from the decks recordings of Glasgow's Northern soul clubs.

I am a strictly amateur DJ with a small collection of records but I manage to squeeze out a two hour show every week on www.radiomagnetic.com on saturdays from 12:00 to 14:00 British Summer Time

I shall try to listen to and learn from Felix but I think my 56K modem will take me back to trying to listen to the old fading in and out Radio Luxembourg:)

I listened to his show today and during his Curtis Mayfield tribute was totally blown away when he played the Sisters Love Mowest recording of Curtis Mayfield's "Give Me Your Love" which was the "B" side of "I Could Never Make A Better Man Than You". Felix has been doing this a long time and we love him, seems like he has 'old soul' pals all over. He was way ahead of the commercial radio chains with his show because he just played the music he loved. Then, when the suits 'discovered' classic soul, for a time his show was on a commercial station in NYC. But when the programmers had used up the format and dismantled the station's lineup, Felix landed back at WBGO, thankfully. Many years ago when I still lived in Brooklyn (near Felix, in fact) I remember his first dances were at small clubs but he had to turn people away. Then he took the big step and rented Roseland, which holds 3000 people. It sold out within hours. And he still has to turn people away, while the music rocks till the wee wee hours.

Keep on pushin', Felix!

HW

P.S. The a cappella "My Girl" Felix plays is the last track on disc 2 of the Temptations box set. It's hidden - i.e., not listed on the packaging - and follows the live "Foe Once In My Life."

You'll find 2002 shows archived at:

http://www.wfmu.org/playlists/SV

Older shows are kept at:

http://www.wfmu.org/Playlists/Finewine/staticindex.html

If there are any problems with those links, just start at the WFMU home page and get there from the schedule page:

http://wfmu.org/

Downtown Soulville is heard live on WFMU on Friday evenings, 7-8 PM EST.

It's a great show- tons of soul 45's, plenty of Detroit. Those archives pages will keep ya entertained for a while.

If anyone's skimming this, please note that the above links are for Mr. Finewine's DOWNTOWN SOULVILLE from WFMU in New Jersey, NOT Felix's RHYTHM REVUE. I should have been a little clearer on that. Now, if only Felix could archive HIS old shows!!!
